Unless the fire can be extinguished immediately then assume that the situation can worsen quickly. Please adopt the following procedure:

1. DIAL 999 and ask for FIRE BRIGADE. 2. Give details of the extent and location of the fire. 3. Give details of the nearest rendezvous point with grid reference (see map overleaf). Arrange to meet the Fire Brigade at this point. 4. Contact SNH staff in the following order:

ACCESS • Mark key points of route with Fire tape. • Meet Fire Brigade at Rendezvous point and guide them to fire.

ACTION ON CALLOUT • Contact the person named below you on contact list • Make way to Ananacaun Field Station. • Put on Fire fighting PPE. • Load up Fire fighting equipment from Ananacaun Field Station. • Enter relevant information onto Fireboard. • Await instruction from SNH OIC.

ACTION FROM OIC AT ANANCAUN FIELD STATION • Collect Fire plan packs. • Identify rendezvous point & marshalling area. • Check key staff have mobile phones or radios. • Designate Argocat/Glencoe operator & assistant. • Confirm location of Argocat/Glencoe (send operator to collect if necessary.) • Designate Argocat/Glencoe access/ rendezvous point • Check Fire Brigade’s requirement for 4wd transport. • Inform Fire Brigade with number of SNH fire fighters and ETA. • Mobilise 1 member of the Kinlochewe staff to transport equipment to fire ground. • Inform Police in Gairloch of incident.

ACTION FROM OIC AT FIRE • Establish communication/liaison with Fire Brigade senior officer. • Carry out roll call. • Assess situation: o Consider the LACES safety protocol (Section 7.4 of plan), particularly consider safe escape routes and establishing a safety zone. o Assess fire size and spread. o Check weather forecast. o Use Wildfire Prediction System (Section 7.6 of plan) to identify windows of opportunity for safe fire suppression. o Potential suppression areas (natural fire breaks). o Resources available and those required (More SNH staff, helicopter?) o Safety of all personnel including visitors – consider closing paths or areas of the NNR. • Develop Incident action plan with Fire brigade senior officer. • Identify a safety zone where personnel can retreat if necessary. It may be possible to use the black burnt ground near the fire origin, once the flanks and rear have been extinguished. • Identify emergency rendezvous point (ERV) • Brief drivers on parking and safe access/egress. • Brief staff & fight fire without taking risks. Only fight fires with a flame length of <1.5m with fogging units and beaters. Larger flame lengths required water at pressure. • Be aware of staff safety, rotate tools/tasks frequently. • Mobilise Firefighting staff in if required. • Contact relevant neighbouring landowners • Logistics organise water/food, relief staff and fuel requirements with member of admin team if prolonged incident likely • Organise a member of staff to liaise with press if dealing with a large scale incident.

COMMAND, CONTROL & CO-ORDINATION • SNH OIC on site is the incident controller until Fire brigade senior officer assumes control. • All personnel must work under supervisor with mobile phone on a ratio of 6 to 1 one member of group to carry first aid kit. • SNH OIC and Fire Brigade senior officer will work through helicopter use flow chart contained in OIC pack to decide on the use of Helicopters for fire fighting. • SNH OIC and Fire Brigade senior officer must work together to produce fire- fighting tactics. • SNH OIC shall pass on all information they have on; Natural firebreaks, water points, and access to Fire Brigade senior officer. • Fire Brigade have overall control of incident.
