Colonists in Massachusetts had ᭢ STATEHOUSE, already rebelled. War and the thirteen colonies’ final break with PHILADELPHIA Britain soon followed. When the fighting ended, a ragtag band of rebels claimed victory. From there, the new United States went on to build a representative government that became a lasting model for democracy and freedom. Today, we live under the same government that this courageous band of rebels created. Write a diary that you might have kept. Record your opinions and feelings about the major events of the time. HANDS-ONHANDS ON HISTORY LAB ACTIVITY The Paper It’s Printed On Background The American colonists had many uses for paper, but what was paper like in the 1700s? Government documents were written on parchment while newspapers, pamphlets, and personal letters were written on paper of lesser quality. Fibers from linen and cotton rags were pounded and pressed together to make this paper used by early Americans. Modern paper is made from wood pulp. You can make your own paper and recycle at the same time. Believe It OR NOT! Important government documents, including the Declaration of Independence, were writ- ten on parchment. Parchment was made from the skins of animals. A high-quality parchment called vel- lum was produced in Europe after the 1400s; it was made from the skins of calves, goat kids, or lambs. Materials I 2 full pages of newspaper torn into small pieces I 2 to 3 cups of water I kitchen blender or electric mixer (Safety Note: Do not take lid off blender while it is operating or put hands near blades.) I 2 tablespoons of school glue I dishpan I one woman’s nylon stocking I wire clothes hanger I bowl (if using a mixer) I pen or pencil 210 UNIT 3 A New Nation: 1776–1791 What To Do A. Untwist the clothes hanger and form it into a 6-inch square. B. Carefully slip the wire square into the nylon stocking. Make sure the stocking is tight and flat. Tie each end of the stocking in a knot. C. Put some torn paper and water into the blender (or bowl). Close the lid and turn it on high. Add more paper and water until the paper disappears and the mix- ture turns into a large ball of pulp. Then let the blender (or mixer) run for two or more minutes. D. Put about 4 inches of water into the dishpan and add the glue. E. Add the pulp to the water and mix well. While stirring, quickly slip the wire frame under the pulp and let it rest on the bottom of the dishpan. Then lift the frame slowly as you count to 20. F. Let the pulp on the frame dry completely. When it is totally dry, pull the paper sheet from the frame. G. If possible, use a hot iron to steam your paper as flat as possible. With a pen or pencil, try signing your name on your paper. When may men break the law? I "Obedience to government," a Tory minister told his congregation, "is every man's duty." But the Reverend Jonathan Boucher was forced to preach his sermon with loaded pistols lying across his pulpit, and he fled to England in September 1775. Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence that when people are governed "under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such a Government." Both Boucher and Jefferson spoke to the question of whether citizens owe obedience to government. In an age when kings held near absolute power, people were told that their kings ruled by divine right. Disobedience to the king was therefore disobedience to God. During the seventeenth century, however, the English beheaded one King (King Charles I in 1649) and drove another (King James II in 1688) out of England. Philosophers quickly developed theories of government other than the divine right of kings to justify these actions. In order to understand the sources of society's authority, philosophers tried to imagine what people were like before they were restrained by government, rules, or law. This theoretical condition was called the state of nature. In his portrait of the natural state, Jonathan Boucher adopted the opinions of a well- known English philosopher, Thomas Hobbes. Hobbes believed that humankind was basically evil and that the state of nature was therefore one of perpetual war and conflict.

    Please note: Each segment in this Webisode has its own Teaching Guide Washington’s March to Valley Forge Valley Forge Historical Society After unsuccessfully engaging the British in a battle to prevent the capture of Philadelphia, Washington led his twelve thousand Continental soldiers into winter quarters at Valley Forge, Pennsylvania. Although no military engagements were fought at Valley Forge, during the winter of 1777-78, the patriot soldiers waged an epic battle against deprivation, disease, and discouragement. Washington’s ill-fed, ill-equipped army, exhausted from long marches, worked in six-inch-deep snow to build log huts and defenses. Undernourished, inadequately clothed, and living in crowded, damp quarters, the men fell sick, with disease killing as many as 2,000. Although Washington petitioned Congress for relief, the fledgling treasury was unable to provide it. Nevertheless, Washington, assisted by Prussian General von Steuben, created an effective, well-trained fighting force. By spring, the army had been transformed in its crucible of suffering. Buoyed by new supplies and troops and the French guarantee of military aid, the Continental army emerged strong, well-disciplined, and confident. Teacher Directions 1. As I have shown in chapter two, “Scientific Racism and the Origins of Anti-Portuguese Stereotypes” of Representations of the Portuguese in American Literature, representations of the Portuguese in American fiction are clearly predicated on prevailing theories of race in America at those times. As Eric J. Sundquist has claimed in To Wake the Nations: Race in the Making of American Literature, this former slaveholding country is one where “race remains very much at the center of […] experience.” (Sundquist, 1993: 17). It was simply impossible for the Portuguese not to be viewed through the lens of racial theories. Race and racism, Toni Morrison reminds us in Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination, are issues that literary critics have resisted addressing, as “silence and evasion have historically ruled literary discourse. Evasion has fostered another, substitute language in which the issues are encoded” (cf. Morrison, 1993: 9-10).1 Like Morrison, I also wish to “identify those moments when American literature was complicit in the fabrication of racism” (ibid.: 16).   • BIOGRAPHIES John Antrobus
    BIOGRAPHIES John Antrobus (1837–1907): Sculptor and painter of portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes (showing everyday life). Antrobus was born in England but came to Philadelphia in 1850. During his travels through the American West and Mexico, he worked as a portraitist before opening a studio in New Orleans. He served briefly with the Confederate Army during the Civil War before moving to Chicago. Antrobus sculpted both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas and was the first artist to paint a portrait of Ulysses S. Grant (in 1863). Edward Atkinson (1827–1905): American political leader and economist who began his political career as a Republican supporter of the Free Soil movement. Atkinson fought slavery before the Civil War by helping escaped slaves and raising money for John Brown. After the Civil War, in 1886, Atkinson campaigned for future President Grover Cleveland and worked against imperialism (the movement to expand a nation’s territorial rule by annexing territory outside of the main country) after the Spanish-American War. Baker & Co (active, 19th century): Lithography firm associated with Louis Kurz. Thomas Ball (1819–1911): American sculptor who gained recognition for his small busts before creating more monumental sculptures. Notable works include one of the first statues portraying Abraham Lincoln as the Great Emancipator (1876), paid for by donations from freed slaves and African American Union veterans, which stands in Washington D.C.’s Lincoln Park. Ball also created a heroic equestrian statue of George Washington for the Boston Public Garden (1860–1864). He joined an expatriate community in Italy, where he received many commissions for portrait busts, cemetery memorials, and heroic bronze statues.

    MIGUEL MONIZ The Day of Portugal and Portuguese Heritage, Social Exclusion, and Imagined Mobilities: Legacies of Racialized Migrant Industrial Labor in Contemporary New England ABSTRACT: Commemorations and monument dedications have been part of Portu- guese-speaking migrant place-making and as responses to social exclusion in New En- gland since these arrivals settled in and built industrial and agricultural worker com- munities beginning in the late nineteenth century. The racialization of migrant laborer identities imposed by discourse and law and supported by scientific studies relying upon genetic data, assisted politicians and elites during the second Industrial Revolu- tion to limit the civic and labor organization rights of workers. This study examines the complex history of Portuguese worker strategies to confront their civic, social, and ra- cial assimilability through civic associations that organized migrant participation in U.S. national celebrations (Fourth of July, Pilgrim ceremonies, war veterans’ memorials) and migrant community commemorations (including Portuguese heritage days and mon- ument dedications like Dighton Rock). Contemporary Day of Portugal celebrations and other heritage dedications that shape social participation in multi-cultural democracy are examined in light of the legacies of white nationalist strategies advocating for Por- tuguese social mobility. The study examines how some of the ritual elements of today’s celebrations yet promote discourses of racialized laborer hierarchies.
