The Scientific Names Notropis Stramineus (Cope) and N

Nat. 151:164 Notes The Scientific Names Notropis stramineus (Cope) and N. ludibundus (Girard) ABSTRACT.—Two scientific names referring to the sand shiner have appeared in the literature during the past decade. A ruling by the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature in 2002 (Opinion, 1991) conserved the more commonly used name, Notropis stramineus (Cope, 1865), and this name should be used rather than the name N. ludibundus (Girard, 1856). The sand shiner is a small species of minnow (family Cyprinidae) occurring most often in lotic waters of the eastern and central United States and southern Canada (Lee et al., 1980). Several scientific names have been proposed for the sand shiner; however, the name Notropis stramineus, originally Hybognathus stramineus Cope, 1865, has been the most widely used name for this species. In 1989, the name N. ludibundus, originally Cyprinella ludibunda Girard, 1856, was resurrected for the sand shiner by Mayden and Gilbert (1989). Since then, both names have appeared in the literature, leading to nomenclatural instability. In the interest of preserving nomenclatural stability, Bailey (1999) submitted a petition to the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature (ICZN) to conserve the name H. stramineus Cope for the sand shiner instead of the slightly older but little-used name C. ludibunda Girard. Comments from ichthyologists on the case were published in the Bulletin of Zoological Nomenclature [2000. 57(2):111–112, 57(3):168–172] and in March 2002 the ICZN published their ruling on the matter (ICZN, 2002). The decision of the ICZN was to conserve the name N. stramineus; therefore, this name should be used for the sand shiner rather than the name N. -

A Checklist of I Texas Fresh-Water Fishes By CLARK HUBBS Department of Zoology The University of Texas DIVISION OF INLAND FISHERIES TEXAS GAME AND FISH COMMISSION Austin, Texas Marion Toole, Director IF Series - No. 3 Revised Dec. 1958 FOREWORD A checklist of Texas fresh-water fishes by CLARK HUBBS This checklist is modified from that of Hubbs (1957a). A number of changes have been made in nomenclature. Notropis roseus and N. deliciosus have been changed to N. texanus and N. strarnineus, re spectively, following Suttkus (1958). Etheostorna whipplei and E. m·tesiae have been changed to E. radiosum following a re-examina tion of available material. Two species have been added, Garnbusia senilis, following Hubbs (1958), and Eucinoslornus argenteus, a marine species collected in a .coastal stream near Brownsville. Two species which had not been described in the previous checklist are given their names, Gambusia geiseri, following Hubbs and Springer (1957), and G. helerochir, following Hubbs (1957b). The primary difference between the checklists is the addition of information on the distribution of fishes within the state to this list. The general concepts follow those given in a previous report (Hubbs, 1957c), but emphasize the ranges of the individual species rather than the distributional patterns. The range designations follow the common names of all species. The numbers refer to the modified game areas shovvn on the map. If the fish inhabits only a part of the area, it is so designated by preceding the number with letters (N. for north, etc.) indicating· the pai·t of the area inhabited by the species. -

Hatch, Ph.D. Division of Science, Business, and Mathematics General College University of Minnesota 216 Pillsbury Dr. SE Minneapolis, MN 55455 February 24, 1986 Introduction One of the most abundant and ubiquitous groups of nongame fishes found in Minnesota is the darter group (Percidae: Etheostomatini). These lively and colorful fishes inhabit nearly all of our streams and rivers and many of our lakes (Eddy and Underhill, 1974). We know in general that darters play an important role in the trophic structure of stream ecosystems (Cummins 1980), and we know that some species are important indicators of general water quality (Gerking 1945; Smith 1971; Pflieger 1975; Burr 1980; Karr 1981). Yet, we know very little about the specific life histories of the darters of our state, and we know even less about how their resource utilization patterns change with changes in habitat and community structure. To date, only three life history studies have been cared out on Minnesota darter populations. Erickson (1977) studied the banded darter (Etheostoma zonale) in the Cannon River; Coon (1982) studied several aspects of the comparative ecology of the rainbow (E. coeruleum), fantail (E. flabellare) and Johnny (E. nigrum) darters in the Root River; and Hatch (1982, 1986) studied the gilt darter (Percina evides) in the St.
