Ultramafic Geocology of South and Southeast Asia

Rajakaruna5,6* Abstract Globally, ultramafc outcrops are renowned for hosting foras with high levels of endemism, including plants with specialised adaptations such as nickel or manganese hyperaccumulation. Soils derived from ultramafc regoliths are generally nutrient-defcient, have major cation imbalances, and have concomitant high concentrations of potentially phytotoxic trace elements, especially nickel. The South and Southeast Asian region has the largest surface occur- rences of ultramafc regoliths in the world, but the geoecology of these outcrops is still poorly studied despite severe conservation threats. Due to the paucity of systematic plant collections in many areas and the lack of georeferenced herbarium records and databased information, it is not possible to determine the distribution of species, levels of end- emism, and the species most threatened. However, site-specifc studies provide insights to the ultramafc geoecology of several locations in South and Southeast Asia. The geoecology of tropical ultramafc regions difers substantially from those in temperate regions in that the vegetation at lower elevations is generally tall forest with relatively low levels of endemism. On ultramafc mountaintops, where the combined forces of edaphic and climatic factors inter- sect, obligate ultramafc species and hyperendemics often occur. Forest clearing, agricultural development, mining, and climate change-related stressors have contributed to rapid and unprecedented loss of ultramafc-associated habitats in the region. The geoecology of the large ultramafc outcrops of Indonesia’s Sulawesi, Obi and Halmahera, and many other smaller outcrops in South and Southeast Asia, remains largely unexplored, and should be prioritised for study and conservation. -

A large amount of the diversity is housed in just a few lineages, presumed to have radiated in the region. For many of these lineages there is no robust phylogenetic hypothesis of relationships, and few Cape plants have been examined for the spatial distribution of their population genetic variation. Such studies are especially relevant for the Cape where high rates of species diversification and the ongoing maintenance of species proliferation is hypothesised. Subtribe Relhaniinae of the daisy tribe Gnaphalieae is one such little-studied lineage. The taxonomic circumscription of this subtribe, the biogeography of its early diversification and its relationships to other members of the Gnaphalieae are elucidated by means of a dated phylogenetic hypothesis. Molecular DNA sequence data from both chloroplast and nuclear genomes are used to reconstruct evolutionary history using parsimony and Bayesian tools for phylogeny estimation. -

NUTTALL’S BUCKMOTH (Hemileuca nuttalli) AND GROUND MANTID (Litaneutria minor) SEARCHES IN THE SOUTH OKANAGAN VALLEY, BRITISH COLUMBIA, 2009 By Vicky Young and Dawn Marks, BC Conservation Corps BC Ministry of Environment Internal Working Report September 23, 2009 ii EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Nuttall’s Buckmoth (Hemileuca nuttalli) and Ground Mantid (Litaneutria minor) are two invertebrate species listed for inventory under the BC Conservation Framework (2009). The Nuttall’s Buckmoth is listed as a mid priority species on The COSEWIC Candidate List (COSEWIC 2009). The Ground Mantid may be recommended as a COSEWIC candidate (Rob Cannings, COSEWIC Arthropod subcommittee, pers. comm.). These species were included in a list of target species for the BC Conservation Corps grassland species inventory crew. The crew spent 4 days surveying antelope-brush habitats within the Southern Okanagan between August 24th and September 1st 2009. These searches did not result in any detection of either target species. This preliminary attempt to address the lack of data for these invertebrate species will help inform future inventory efforts.
