The Killey Family

Catherine Killey married James Lawson on the 29th of April, 1740, at Onchan. Continued from 1.43.5 and see 12.3.2 below.

Ann Quilliam married Ewan Kinread on the 10th of November, 1770, at Patrick. Continued from Volume III, 6.3.3 and see 12.6.1below.

12.1 Origins

Killey comes form the gaelic Mac Giolla Ceallaigh which became Mackilleykelly. Over the course of time the Mac and the Kelly were dropped, to leave Killey. The original meaning would be “son of the servant of Ceallagh” where Ceallagh has the meaning of war or strife. Killie is known in 1610, Killey in 1651 and Killiah in 1693. This last variation gives a good indication of the pronunciation (kil-yah).

In many place names killey has the meaning “of the church” as in Ballakilley, “the farm of the church”.

12.2 Early Days

12.2.1 Hugh Killey (700) was born circa 1670, probably in Malew. The name of his wife has not yet been determined but he had at least one son, Hugh. He was buried on the 23rd of February, 1748, at Malew.

12.2.2 Hugh Killey (682), was baptized at Malew on the 17th of November, 1693. He married Elizabeth Quaile on the 20th of December, 1720 at Malew. Elizabeth died on the 18th of January, 1721. Hugh married for the second time Dorothy Kewley (see Volume II, 15.5.2) on the 27th of April, 1723 at Malew. He died at Malew on the 1st of August, 1760. See 12.3 for details of his descendants.

12.2.2.1 Elizabeth Quaile (699) was born circa 1695. She married Hugh Killey on the 20th of December, 1720, at Malew. Elizabeth died in 1720-21, probably in childbirth, and was buried on the 18th of January at Malew.

12.3.1 Margaret Killey (701) was baptized on the 3rd of May, 1724, at Malew.

12.3.2 Catherine Killey (542) was baptized on the 13th of February, 1725, at Malew. She married James Lawson (541) at Onchan on the 29th of April, 1740 {when she was only 15? - check}. The marriage entry makes no mention that Catherine was under age. Catherine died in 1795 and is buried at Onchan. See Volume II, 1.43.5 for details of her descendants. It is through Catherine that any possible “Royal” connection is established.

12.3.3 Hugh Killey (702) was baptized on the 10th of January, 1727, at Malew. If Hugh Killey (706) below was his brother, then Hugh (702) died before 1741

12.3.4 Isabel Killey (703) was baptized on the 13th of September, 1730, at Malew.

12.3.5 William Killey (6588) was baptized on the 4th of March, 1733-4, at Malew.

12.3.6 Jane Killey (704) was baptized on the 7th of July, 1734, at Malew.

12.3.7 Dorothy Killey (705) was baptized on the 6th of March, 1736, at Malew. She did not survive childhood and was buried on the 27th of October, 1741, at Malew.

12.3.8 John Killey (6589) was baptized on the 11th of May, 1740, at Malew.

12.3.9 Hugh Killey (706) was baptized on the 22nd of May, 1741, at Malew.

12.4 Killey/Quilliam

12.4.1 Philip Killey (4227) was born circa 1680. He married Ann Clucas on the 31 of October, 1714, at German. See 12.5 for details of his descendants.

12.4.2 Ann Clucas (4228) was born circa 1680. She married Philip Killey on the 31 of October, 1714, at German. See 12.5 for details of her descendants.

12.5.2.1 Philip Quilliam (4231) was baptized on the 7th of August, 1720, at Patrick. The son of Philip Quilliam (4226), he married Catherine Killey on the 19th of November, 1744, at German. See 12.6 for details of his descendants.

12.5.3 John Killey (4234) was baptized on the 10th of November, 1720, at German.

12.5.4 Elizabeth Killey (4235) was baptized on the 25th of November, 1725, at German.
