July 30: William Humphrey Our mini-cluster of UU congregations is exchanging ministers this Sunday. Mr. William Humphrey is a trained educator/administrator and is serving as the minister at All Souls UU Church in Belleville, Ohio. Will is an insightful and curious colleague, and we’re excited to invite him to our pulpit. Rev. Strawn will be preaching at Westfield Center in this exchange. August 6: Immigration: Behind the Scenes View (Jenny Dirksen) Ms. Dirksen has worked tirelessly for many years on issues of immigration - justice, language, hospitality - meeting every day needs of those who are new to our country. These are people we often don't even notice! August 13: Christian Sophia & Sun Dance Tree: Birthing the Future (Christopher Reynolds) In the Sophianic tradition, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are in union with Mother, Daughter, Holy Soul. The union of Trinity and TriniSophia birth the future. In the indigenous tradition, the same theme of birthing the future appears in how the 4 days of the Sun Dance are a roadmap for the News year to come, but in poetic, metaphoric form. With knowledge of Sophia and of the Sun Dance Tree, it is possible to access soul and spirit in insights that give momentum to the way forward into a beautiful experience of life for the coming year. -

Faithful Non-Believers: Examining Ritual and Belief in a Unitarian Universalist Congregation Clara Sciortino Advisor: Greta Austin September 24, 2013 Though March 17, 2013 represented my first visit to a Unitarian Universalist church, it didn’t feel at all foreign. Growing up in a United Methodist Church, and visiting several other protestant services when I first arrived in Tacoma, it really felt quite familiar. I was greeted at the door and invited to put on a nametag. As I entered the sanctuary, an usher handed me a hymnal and a bulletin, and a kind older woman sat down next to me, introducing herself and asking me questions about where I went to school. Even the prelude, sung by a choir, was a traditional Christian song, “Zion’s Walls.” With the exception of a few subtle differences, such as the chalice lighting at the beginning, the service mostly felt about the same to me as a traditional protestant service. -

Consultation on Ministry to and with Youth
Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth Summary Report August 2007 Greetings! Since October 2004, when the UUA Board of Trustees called for the Consultation on Ministry To and With Youth, we have engaged thousands of Unitarian Universalists. Youth have dialogued with their peers and in intergenerational groups about their hopes for youth ministry. Surveys, congregational conversations, district gatherings, and conversations with numerous stakeholders and UU communities have taken place. The key findings gathered in these steps are included in this packet. As the Task Force on Youth Ministry met, worked closely with districts and stakeholders across the Association, and designed the Summit on Youth Ministry, we consistently revisited our visions for youth ministry and sought to incorporate what we learned from the wisdom of Unitarian Universalists throughout the Association. These visions have continued to shape our thinking and were crucial to the Summit on Youth Ministry. We would like to share them with you here: Strong and healthy youth self-identity: Communities encourage youth to explore and develop their faith and to grow spiritually. Love and sharing among youth and adults: Congregations are intergenerational communities that play important roles in the lives of youth. Sense of belonging, freedom, and responsibility: Youth are welcomed, supported, and given a voice in their congregations and in the Association. Youth are in community with their peers and integrated in Unitarian Universalist communities. Adults and youth practice forgiveness and learn from their mistakes as well as from each other. Purpose and choice: Youth are able to fundamentally transform congregations and the larger world by practicing and living out their faith. -

Finding a Spiritual Home Unitarian Universalism for Young Adults Michael Tino Transitions New schools, new jobs, new relationships and new communities—the lives of many young adults are filled with transitions, each of which adds both new possibilities and new needs to our lives. In this time of great change in our lives, we often need a setting that nurtures and grounds us. Unitarian Universalism provides young adults with just such a place. In our congregations and in the wider Unitarian Universalist community, we are simultaneously challenged to rigorously examine our faith and given the freedom to express it. Unitarian Universalism offers us somewhere to ask questions, to engage in dialogue, to meet others on their spiritual journeys, and to find our spiritual home. Unitarian Universalism is important to me because it’s revolutionary, magical, practical, welcoming, uplifting, mine. UU churches are where I find spiritual communities. My leadership is encouraged and nourished, not just by my elders but by my peers as well. I have made precious friendships with fellow young adults in church. I love UU young adults. 5 Starter Facts About Unitarian Universalism 1. Unitarian Universalism welcomes pluralism and diversity in its beliefs and practices, embracing teachings from Eastern and Western religions and philosophies. There are ~250,000 adherents in the United States. 2. Unitarian Universalism was established in 1961 from the merge of the Universalist Church of America (est. 1793), and the American Unitarian Association (est. 1825). The name refers to the oneness of God and the belief that all people gain salvation. 3. Unitarian-Universalists do not have a common creed or doctrine, but they share seven principles viewed as guidance for life and morality. It includes affirmation of the inherent dignity of every person, promotion of justice, equality and compassion, and a free and responsible search for truth and meaning. 4. Because Unitarian Universalism has its roots in Protestant Christianity, the Bible remains an important sacred text for many. However, they also turn to texts from other traditions and cultures around the world for wisdom and spiritual insights. Central to their understanding of scripture and sacred texts is that each text must be understood to be a product of a particular time and place. 5. Believing in God is not an expectation, like most Western religions. Rather, the varying concepts of the divine, or lack thereof, is what uplifts the community in not feeling alone in their personal beliefs. Weltner People join Unitarian Universalist congregations from many different religious backgrounds. For some individuals, their childhood religion provided a strong moral or ethical foundation for growing up. For others it continues to offer religious sustenance in their daily lives. For all, Unitarian Universalism is an affirming place for their growing spirituality. Discover how two people from Catholic and Jewish backgrounds learned who they are as individuals and as Unitarian Universalists. From Catholic Roots: A New Religious Home Patrick T. O'Neill People are often startled to meet a Unitarian Universalist minister with a name like Patrick Thomas Aquinas O'Neill. As my name inescapably reveals, I come from a family that is very Irish and devoutly Catholic. Though my own religious journey has taken me on a different spiritual road than that of my immigrant parents, I remain proud of my family heritage and grateful for the deeply religious upbringing my family provided. My education was typical of the American Catholic school system of the 1950s and 1960s. My elementary school teachers were the School Sisters of Notre Dame. I attended a Carmelite prep school for boys, and graduated from a Jesuit college. I was an altar boy until I was sixteen. I attended college from 1965 to 1969 and came of age during that turbulent decade when America's social and religious values were so vehemently tested. As a sincere young Catholic, I struggled as all my friends did during those years with the profound moral upheavals of our time. -

Worship Script July 19, 2011 With the Unitarian Church in Kézdivásárhely, Romania (Transylvania) Presented by Rev. Mark Evens Chiming of the Hour Call To Worship: Today we celebrate North American Unitarian Universalist history, and the Transylvanian Unitarian history…of connecting with others like us and yet also very different from us around the world. We celebrate and renew the partner church relationship between Ann Arbor and Kézdivásárhely. Today, with a flower communion, we celebrate each other’s beautiful faces and complex natures. We note and affirm that we have much in common, and are each unique, as individuals and as congregations. Each Sunday our congregation lights a chalice. The flaming chalice as a symbol of our faith originated during World War II. Members of the North American Unitarian Service Committee were working based in Portugal to help persecuted minorities flee the Nazi regime. To make their documents look more official an artist combined two elements: the chalice, a symbol of the fullness of life available to us, and as reminder of goodness shared in community, and a flame, a symbol of the power of learning, and of love. Please stand and read with me our chalice lighting words printed in the order of service and then remain standing for our next song: Lighting of the Chalice (In Unison) We light this chalice for the light of truth; We light this chalice for the warmth of love; We light this chalice for the energy of action; We light this chalice for the harmony of peace. Reading - “Standing in a Doorway” By Molly Brewer, Intern Minister of the First Universalist Church of Auburn, Maine and seminarian at Meadville Lombard Theological School What do Unitarian Universalists talk about, when we talk about being Pagan? As someone who holds both of these spiritual identities in balance—and sometimes in tension—I wonder about this often. “Pagan” is already a broad umbrella term. The Six Sources of Unitarian Universalism includes Pagans in the even bigger container of “Earth-centered traditions,” which attempts to create a unified thread in a huge number of theologies that sometimes have little in common. It’s like calling Unitarian Universalism a “Christian denomination.” Some UUs do consider themselves Christian, much like some Pagans embrace the term Earth-based. But ask a cross-section and you’ll likely discover that the label erases important truths. Ironically, my lived experience of a Pagan identity is as important to my call to UU ministry as Unitarian Universalism itself. In Pagan practice, there is an invitation to mysticism and embodied ritual, to perceive the spirit world as a valid part of our human experience. My prayers address the Goddess Brighid just as often as the Spirit of Life and Love. My spirituality is based around Deities: I experience Them as distinct and different energies, and my relationship with Them is close to the core of my religious life. This is why I don’t describe my faith as Earth-based or Earth-centered, and the distinction is important. But believing that the Gods are present in the world around us means that the Earth and its creatures are indeed part of the Divine picture.
