The first was published in August 1973, the second in February 1983 and the third in March 1993. The 1971 and the 1981 Censuses provided the Statistical information for the 1973 and 1983 editions of the ‘Guide’. Statistical information on facilities available in villages of 1000 or more people was collected after the 2001 Census. The collection of data was done by Cartographic teams in June 2005 and was administered through the assistance of Local/Tribal authorities. In the 2001 Guide to the Villages of Botswana efforts was made to include the number of schools, clinics or hospitals and police stations for each village. ‘Guide to Villages of Botswana’ is the tenth in series of publications on the 2001 Census. CENSUS DISTRICTS The country was divided into Census Districts for census operational convenience. A census district could be a town/city, an administrative district or a sub district, depending on vastness and complexity of the administrative structure of the area concerned. The Urban Census Districts comprised two cities viz. Gaborone and Francistown and towns of Lobatse, Selibe Phikwe, Orapa, Jwaneng and Sowa Town. The Rural Districts were as follows: Southern District was divided into Kanye/Moshupa, Barolong and Ngwaketse West Districts. South East District remained as it was. Kweneng District was divided into Kweneng East and Kweneng West Districts. Kgatleng District remained as it was. Central District remained as it was in 1991 Census, viz., Serowe/Palapye, Central Mahalapye, Central Bobonong, Central Boteti and Central Tutume. North East District remained as it was. North West District was divided into Ngamiland East, Ngamiland West, Chobe and Delta. Ghanzi District was divided into Ghanzi and Central Kalahari Game Reserve Kgalagadi District was divided into Kgalagadi South and Kgalagadi North. VILLAGES Although there is no official definition of a village, the Census Office retained the status of village for all settlements officially designated as such. The Tribal Administration, District Administration and the District Council have the joint responsibility of designating a settlement as a village. However a village is usually identified by the presence of some administrative or social facilities such as the presence of a tribal administration office and availability of facilities such as schools, clinics or health centres, water reticulation etc 3. LAYOUT OF ‘THE GUIDE’ The 2001 Guide to Villages Report comprise of list of villages for each district with their population size (1000 or more). Available facilities then follow for each of the villages. The population figures of the villages for 1991 and 2001 censuses are also given. 4.
