The Allied reporting name was Claude. Mitsubishi assigned the task of designing the new fighter to a team led by Jiro Horikoshi original creator of the similar but unsuccessful Mitsubishi 1MF10and later responsible for the famous A6M Zero. With the Ka demonstrating excellent performance, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force ordered a single modified prototype for evaluation as the Ki While this demonstrated similar performance to the Navy aircraft and hence was far faster than the IJAAF's current fighter, the Kawasaki Ki biplanethe type was rejected by the army owing to its reduced maneuverability. Mitsubishi, busy turning the Ka into the A5M, submitted a minimally changed aircraft as the Kithis being defeated by Nakajima's competing aircraft, which was ordered into service as the Ki The aircraft entered service in earlyand soon saw action in aerial battles at the Mitsubishi A5M Claude of the Second Sino-Japanese War[10] including air-to-air battles with the Republic of China Air Force 's Boeing P C Model "Peashooters" in the world's first aerial dogfighting and kills between monoplane fighters built of Mitsubishi A5M Claude metal. Chinese Nationalist pilots, primarily flying the Curtiss Hawk IIIfought against the Japanese, but the A5M was the better of almost every fighter aircraft it encountered. The Mitsubishi team Mitsubishi A5M Claude to improve the A5M, working through versions until the final A5M4 Mitsubishi A5M Claude, which carried an external underside drop tank to provide fuel for extended range. The A5M's most competitive Mitsubishi A5M Claude in the air was the Polikarpov Ia fast and heavily armed fighter flown by both Chinese Air Force regulars and Soviet volunteers. Air battles inespecially on 18 February and 29 April, ranked among the largest air battles ever fought at the time. This version, used for pilot trainingwas dubbed the A5M4-K. K version aircraft continued to be used for pilot training long after standard A5Ms left front-line service. Almost all A5Ms had open cockpits. A closed cockpit was tried but found little favor among Navy aviators [ citation needed ]. All had fixed, non- retractable undercarriage. Wheel spats were a feature of standard fighters but not training aircraft. The Flying Tigers encountered the Type 96, although not officially, and one was shot down at Mingaladon Mitsubishi A5M ClaudeBurma on 29 January In the closing Mitsubishi A5M Claude of the war most remaining A5M airframes were used for kamikaze attacks. No restored or flightworthy A5Ms are known to be in existence. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Main article: Mitsubishi Ki Bloomsbury Publishing, Japanese Aircraft of the Pacific War. Mitsubishi A5M | Military Wiki | Fandom It was the world's first monoplane shipboard fighter and the predessor of the A6M 'Zero'. The Allied reporting name was 'Claude'. The Imperial Japanese Navy delivered a new fighter specification in calling for an impressive aircraft system capable of miles-per-hour top speed with an excellent climb-rate interestingly the specification did not include a requirement for ship-borne operations. Though the Mitsubishi and Nakajima firms both produced designs, Mitsubishi A5M Claude was the Mitsubishi firm that got approval to further their development. First flight of the first prototype this powered by a Nakajima Kotobuki 5 series radial piston engine of horsepower was on February Mitsubishi A5M Claude, and sported inverted gull wings which posed some handling issues. The second prototype, featuring a new conventional wing design, became the production A5M after flight testing exceeded all specification expectations. Further development led to the A5M4, modernized with the addition of an enclosed cockpit but found little favor among Navy aviators. A gallon drop tank was added for improved ranges and this production series eventually saw use of the Nakajima Kotobuki 41 KAI series 9- cylinder radial piston engine. The engine was rated at horsepower and allowed for Mitsubishi A5M Claude of up to miles per hour. All had fixed, non-retractable undercarriage with except for the trainers wheel spats. The aircraft arrived just in time to take part in the Second China-Japanese War, and made its large scale debut on 19 Septemberwhen eighteen A5Ms clashed with a larger Chinese force. The Japanese pilots claimed Mitsubishi A5M Claude victories for no losses, and although the claims were exaggerated there was no doubt that the A5M was superior to the Hawk IIIs and Boeing s in Chinese service. During this period they began to clash with Soviet Polikarpov I biplanes and Is monoplanes, with both sides claiming then and since to have had the better fighters. In general the two sides were fairly equally matched in early clashes, but Mitsubishi A5M Claude Japanese had the Mitsubishi A5M Claude of the fighting duringand Soviet losses in China began to mount. The A5M was actually responsible for the first monoplane-versus-monoplane air battles in history, this being between the Japanese and the Chinese in the 2nd Sino-Japanese War. The P's were of similar design with their open-air cockpits, radial piston engines and static faired-over undercarriages. Unfortunately for the P's and their Chinese airmen, the A5M proved superior and the A5Ms had little competition for the moment. Used by the Imperial Japanese Navy, the A5M served on through during the Navy began to pull out Mitsubishi A5M Claude China in preparation for the wider Pacific War that was expected to erupt at any time. At the same time the A6M Zero began to enter service, and the A5M was rapidly phased out in front line units. The A5M was only involved in a few clashes with Allied aircraft. Land based aircraft in the Marshall Islands clashed with attacking American aircraft from the Enterprise and Yorktown, on 1 February. Finally, on 7 May two A5Ms from the carrier Shoho managed to get airborne before she was sunk by US torpedoes and bombs. Three victories were claimed by the two Mitsubishi A5M Claude and four A6Ms that launched, but with their carrier lost the aircraft had nowhere to go - one managed to land on a nearby island but the rest ditched. This version, used for pilot training, was dubbed the A5M4-K. K version planes continued to be used for pilot training long after standard A5Ms left front-line service. After being relegated Mitsubishi A5M Claude trainers, then again were called back into action as 'kamikaze' planes in the final Mitsubishi A5M Claude of World War 2. Around 1, A5M's of all variants were built. To find more information on this aircraft, download this Kindle eBook from Amazon.
