After appearing in such films as The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover and A Pin for the Butterfly, Kingston began appearing on the long-running medical drama ER in September of 1997. She first appeared in the premiere episode of the fourth season, the award-winning live episode "Ambush" where she portrayed British surgeon, Elizabeth Corday. Her character proved to be incredibly popular, appearing on the series for just over seven seasons until leaving in October 2004. Kingston did return to the role in spring 2009 during ER’s 15th and final season for two episodes. Kingston continued to entertain US audiences in November 2005, when she guest-starred in the long-running mystery drama Without a Trace. Not limiting her talents to the screen, in 2006, Kingston starred as Nurse Ratched, opposite Christian Slater as Randle Patrick McMurphy, in the Garrick Theatre's West End production of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. 2008 saw Kingston in one of her most beloved recurring roles to genre fans when she guest- starred in the fourth series of Doctor Who. Her debut as the character River Song was in the two- part episode "Silence in the Library"/"Forest of the Dead.” Originally thought to be a one-off, River Song was such a hit with fans she has since appeared in fifteen episodes of the series and counting. Later in 2008, Kingston took the part of Mrs. Bennet in the acclaimed four-part British television production Lost in Austen, based on Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. In October that same year, Kingston returned to US screens with an appearance in the perennially popular CSI: Crime Scene Investigation where she portrayed Patricia Alwick, a psychiatrist and grief counsellor who helps the team cope with the recent death of CSI member Warrick Brown. The next year, Kingston portrayed Miranda Pond, a defense attorney in two episodes of the legal drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and returned the following year as the same character in two more episodes of the long running series. In early 2013, Kingston began appearing in the CW series Arrow, based on the Green Arrow DC comics character, as Professor Dinah Lance, the mother of Laurel and Sara Lance. She can also be seen in the films Happily Ever After and Bukowski, based on the life of author Charles Bukowski. In 2018, Alex Kingston appeared in the TV series A Discovery of Witches, as Sarah Bishop and appeared in the UK thriller series The Widow. • Drug Education and Its Publics in 1980S Britain
International Journal of Drug Policy 88 (2021) 103029 Contents lists available at ScienceDirect International Journal of Drug Policy journal homepage: www.elsevier.com/locate/drugpo Policy Analysis Just say know: Drug education and its publics in 1980s Britain Alex Mold Centre for History in Public Health, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, 15-17 Tavistock Place, London, WC1H 9SH, United Kingdom ARTICLE INFO ABSTRACT Keywords: Until the 1980s, anti-drug education campaigns in the UK were rare. This article examines the reasons behind a Heroin policy shift that led to the introduction of mass media drug education in the mid 1980s. It focuses on two Drug education campaigns. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ ran in England, and ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ ran in Scotland. The campaigns Health education were different in tone, with ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ making use of fear and ‘shock horror’ tactics, whereas History of drug use ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ attempted to deliver a more positive health message. ‘Heroin Screws You Up’ was criticised by many experts for its stigmatising approach. ‘Choose Life Not Drugs’ was more favourably received, but both campaigns ran into difficulties with the wider public. The messages of these campaigns were appro priated and deliberately subverted by some audiences. This historical policy analysis points towards a complex and nuanced relationship between drug education campaigns and their audiences, which raises wider questions about health education and its ‘publics’. In April 1986, the cast of teen TV soap, Grange Hill, released a song wanted to be seen to take action on drugs, leading to the introduction of titled ‘Just say no’.

Without a Trace: A Comparative Analysis of How Transitional Justice Methods Address Enforced Disappearances in Spain & Argentina By: Paige Calabrese Fall 2019 When a country is plagued with civil war, dictatorship, or extreme internal unrest, governments can become pressured to take aggressive measures to maintain order and establish power, including abducting citizens believed to be threats to their power. This phenomenon of government-orchestrated civilian abductions is known as “enforced disappearance,” and it leaves damage that endures long after the conflict or dictatorship has come to an end. While many countries have histories checkered with this practice, two countries stand out because of the remedial provisions they have enacted in their transitions to democracy: Spain and Argentina. Spain is often criticized for not taking effective remedial action, but Argentina is frequently praised for its aggressive prosecution of former government officials involved in perpetrating civilian abductions.

ICES CM 2005/X:12 Working paper may not be cited without prior reference to the authors Impact of grey seals in the herring gillnet fishery along the Swedish Baltic coast Sara Königson, Arne Fjälling and Sven-Gunnar Lunneryd Institute of Coastal Research, Swedish Board of Fisheries, Contact author: Sara Königson, Institute of Coastal Research, Swedish Board of Fisheries, Box 423, 401 26 Göteborg, Sweden tel: +46 31 7430422 email: [email protected] The gillnet fishery for herring Clupea harengus in the Baltic Sea is subjected to intense damages by grey seals, Halichoerus grypus. Fishing takes place mainly during spring and autumn. Damage caused by seal peak in late autumn and for which reason fishery during this part of the year has more or less disappeared. In this study we investigated the hidden damage, i.e. the amount of fish completely removed from nets without a trace as well as the catch losses due to the presence of seals. Observers joined a commercial fisherman on his regular fishing trips. Catch and damaged fish were noted and systematic observations for seals were carried out during every fishing occasion. On some fishing trips herring was caught in a 30 meter long net of commercial type. All fish was then marked, without being removed from the net. The net was thereafter reset and linked to the local fisherman’s gear. The percentage of marked fish that was damaged or missing the next day, was used as an indication that seals had visited the nets. If a large part of the marked fish were missing it was concluded that seals had visited the nets.

Blendon, Harvard School of Public Health, Project Director John M. Benson, Harvard School of Public Health Catherine M. DesRoches, Harvard School of Public Health Melissa J. Herrmann, ICR/International Communications Research June 13, 2002 After "ER" Smallpox Episode, Fewer "ER" Viewers Report They Would Go to Emergency Room If They Had Symptoms of the Disease Viewers More Likely to Know About the Importance of Smallpox Vaccination For Immediate Release: Thursday, June 13, 2002 BOSTON, MA – Regular "ER" viewers who saw or knew about that television show's May 16, 2002, smallpox episode were less likely to say that they would go to a hospital emergency room if they had symptoms of what they thought was smallpox than were regular "ER" viewers questioned before the show. In a survey by the Harvard School of Public Health and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, 71% of the 261 regular "ER" viewers interviewed during the week before the episode said they would go to a hospital emergency room. A separate HSPH/RWJF survey conducted after the episode found that a significantly smaller proportion (59%) of the 146 regular "ER" viewers who had seen the episode, or had heard, read, or talked about it, would go to an emergency in this circumstance. This difference may reflect the pandemonium that broke out in the fictional emergency room when the suspected smallpox cases were first seen. Regular "ER" viewers who saw or knew about the smallpox episode were also less likely (19% to 30%) than regular "ER" viewers interviewed before the show to believe that their local hospital emergency room was very prepared to diagnose and treat smallpox.
