Irvin, Lisa Renee (Ph.D., Communication) In Search of the Real: Communication around, about, and of Psychological Trauma and its Subjects Thesis directed by Professor Emeritus Gerard Hauser As social readjustment and recovery efforts among military populations suffering from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) continue to perplex researchers, mental health professionals, and veterans, dynamics of social stigma are increasingly problematized and targeted as sites of intervention in public health campaigns and inter-disciplinary research inquiries. In response to these problems and attributions of stigma, this research investigates historical, theoretical, and institutional sources of stigmatization in the diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric casualties suffering from the condition now known as PTSD. Through archaeological analysis of this history, the research identifies pivotal scientific controversies, competing theoretical perspectives, and shifts in psychiatric treatment that display on-going tensions characterizing psychiatric science in relation to changes in socio-political sensitivities implicating dynamics of social stigmatization. Close analytic attention is directed towards examining the politics and practices involved in the instantiation of a Therapeutic Community experimental model of post-combat treatment in a U.S. Naval Hospital conducted by Dr. Harry A. Wilmer with Korean War Veterans in 1955 designed explicitly to intervene in stigmatizing institutional configurations and socio-cultural attitudes. Research findings reveal that discourses highlighting the role of psychological trauma, overwhelming stress, and sexual or physical domination emerged as counter-discourses that challenged dominant neuro-psychiatric theories which purported neurological inferiority, genetic susceptibility, and moral weakness as conventional explanations of post-traumatic iii reactions. These reductive explanations are further argued to predispose psychiatric diagnostic discourse to stigmatize survivors of trauma through the instantiation of discursive suspicion in association with malingering and interiorized pre-conditions that politically diffract attention away from the concrete events productive of traumatic injury. Analysis also reveals a lineage of counter-theories that underscore the role that interpersonal, doctor-patient, and public communication has for not only in producing self stigma and identity altering interactions, but also in sustaining and recovering from post- traumatic reactions. Findings demonstrate how interventions in systemic cycles of stigmatization and patterns of pathological communication in treatment contexts can be facilitated by organization culture alterations encouraging staff discursive reflexivity of transference communication, and patient social support encouraging narrative reconstructions of self and others through utilization of meta-communicative techniques. iv Dedication This thesis is dedicated to the late Dr. Harry A.     INTRODUCING THE LIBERAL ARTS THROUGH INTERDISCIPLINARY INQUIRY: PROPOSAL FOR AN INTEGRATIVE GENERAL EDUCATION EXPERIENCE Mark E. Blum University of Louisville We can deliberate about things that are in our power and can be done. Aristotle, Nichomachean Ethics The beginning of the contemporary undergraduate's study should involve him in the inquiry experience, encompassing library and field research, for several reasons which include both cultural and psychological evidence that a student is more successful in integrating the purpose and abilities of a Liberal Arts education when he is an agent in the direction of his own studies. The inquiry should be interdisciplinary, for the student has not yet reached a maturity of disciplinary knowledge that will allow specialization in a depth that permits self-direction. This imperative will appear strange to many who are proficient in higher interdisciplinary research, that is, the inquirers who have mastered several disciplines and employ them in their thought, for to be interdisciplinary normally connotes a complex integration of methodologies. As Jonathan Broido expresses it, an interdiscipli- narian must be able to describe the explanatory utility, predictive power, and information-theoretic measures of the fields that he employs.¹ Those academics who are suspicious of interdisciplinary thought and inquiry, accusing it of conceptual confusion, lack of intellectual rigor, and in its undergraduate pedagogy, an impediment to the development of disciplinary competence, will be equally puzzled by a claim that freshmen should begin their orientation to the Liberal Arts through interdisciplinary inquiry.² My presentation of a freshman program in interdisciplinary inquiry is based on an understanding of the concepts of questioning and methods of library and field research "generic" to the social sciences and the humanities,³ yet 57 at a level of simplicity prior to the higher level of disciplinary organization that is accomplished gradually in the upper levels of undergraduate study, and polished in graduate work.

Specifically, I question the nature of subject/object relations through a comprehensive study of all five senses in Shakespeare. Positioned as mediators of knowledge between body and mind, the senses provide a means to examine the relationship between self-constituting subjects “in here” and exterior world objects “out there.” I believe that early modern authors, and Shakespeare foremost among them, used the liminality of the physical senses to test newly emergent ideas of inwardness and individual consciousness. My dissertation upends the sensory hierarchy assumed by Western tradition by arguing that smell, taste, and touch are crucial to theatrical experience; indeed, they invite a deeper form of theatrical receptivity through subject/object interpenetration than the senses of hearing or seeing. This is because sights and sounds distance the perceiving-subject from the perceived-object onstage, inviting us instead to reflect upon the theatrical medium that fills the divide. My project places the bodily senses and affective faculties in conversation in order to explore the sensory metaphors that motivate character judgements and plot understandings at a level of felt engagement.

My Mentor Eli Sagan (1927-2015): In Memoriam Don Carveth—York University (Toronto) For over a decade, Eli Sagan’s classic, Freud, Women, and Morality: The Psychology of Good and Evil (1988), sat on my shelf unread. When I finally picked it up, I was stunned. Here were answers to many of the central problems in psychoanalytic theory that had troubled me for years, expounded with both scholarly erudition and rare lucidity. I began teaching it. One day a student asked, “So who is this guy Sagan anyway?” I confessed I really didn’t know, but returned to my office determined to find out. I could find next to nothing about him on the net but finally came up with an address in New Jersey. I wrote him a fan letter. A few weeks later I was sitting in my college office when the phone rang and a raspy voice said, “Hello, Carveth, this is Eli Sagan!”—and so, already in my sixties, I found a mentor. No wonder I couldn’t find him on the net: Eli didn’t have e-mail; didn’t own a computer; didn’t use a typewriter. Each of his many large books had been composed by pen and paper. He was an “old-school” scholar in every sense. Every other Sunday morning and then at least once a month for the next few years, Eli and I enjoyed our telephone dialogue as I read through each of his books and discussed them with him one by one.
