Liberty Fund, Inc., is a private educational foundation established to encourage the study of the ideal of a society of free and responsible individuals. The organization develops, supervises, and finances its own educational programs to foster the study of the ideal of a society offreeand responsible individuals.

Liberty Fund is a -exempt, private, operating educational foundation. Liberty Fund does not engage in political action. Liberty Fund fulfills its mission by conducting programs, not by awarding grants to outside organizations or individuals.

Liberty Fund’s activities are concentrated in three areas:

Books Liberty Fund has published more than 400 titles since its first publication,Education in a Free Society (1973). Most titles explore some aspect of the interrelationship of liberty and responsibility in individual life, society, and governance. Liberty Fund’s books are edited and translated by top scholars who provide context, annotations, bibliographies, and other supplementary elements to support the text. Click here to learn more.

Conferences

Each year, Liberty Fund conducts over 150 conferences throughout the United States, Canada, Latin America, Europe and Asia. To date, Liberty Fund has held over 7,000 conferences. Liberty Fund conferences are interdisciplinary and invitation only.

The conference program reflects Pierre F. Goodrich’s conviction that education in a free society requires a dialogue centered on the ideas that have shaped the values and institutions of a free society. Mr. Goodrich believed education to be a lifelong responsibility of each individual.

Web Liberty Fund’s four educational web properties offer online libraries, blogs, podcasts, forums, discussions, and more to encourage a dialogue of ideas pertaining to liberty. OLL | The Online Library of Liberty provides hundreds of titles free of charge about individual liberty, limited constitutional government, and the . Liberty Matters, the latest addition to the OLL, is an online discussion forum among liberty’s leading scholars. Econlib | The Library of Economics and Liberty contains classic economics books, an online encyclopedia of economics, articles discussing current economics topics, a moderated blog where economics issues are discussed, and a collection of podcasts. Law & Liberty | The Library of Law and Liberty focuses on the content, status, and development of law in the context of republican and and the ways that liberty and law mutually reinforce the other. Law & Liberty considers a range of foundational and contemporary legal issues, legal philosophy, and pedagogy. AdamSmithWorks features content centered around the works and ideas of the moral philosopher and founder of economics, . Resources include digital versions of his major works, scholarly essays, videos, and an interactive pin factory. The Founder Pierre F. Goodrich (1894-1973), an businessman and lawyer, founded Liberty Fund in 1960.

After graduating from Wabash College and Harvard Law School, Pierre F. Goodrich worked as an attorney. After his father’s death, Mr. Goodrich became the leader of his family’s business, including serving as President or Chairman of the Board of the Indiana Telephone Corporation, Peoples Loan and Trust, and the Ayrshire Collieries Corporation.

He served on the Boards of Trustees of the Great Books Foundation, the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the China Institute, the Intercollegiate Society of Individualists, the Foundation for Economic Education, and the Institute for Humane Studies. He was a member of the Mont Pelerin Society. He served on the Board of Trustees of his alma mater, Wabash College, from 1940 to 1969, building there the Goodrich Seminar Room in Wabash’s main library, dedicated to the study of the tradition of liberty.

In 1945, Pierre Goodrich founded the Winchester Foundation; in 1965 he also established Thirty Five Twenty (now known as the Pierre F. and Enid Goodrich Foundation). In 1973, shortly before his death, Goodrich published an essay he co-authored with Wabash College Professor Benjamin A. Rogge titled Education in a Free Society. Mr. Goodrich saw learning as an ongoing process of discovery, not limited to traditional institutional settings or specific ages. Mr. Goodrich believed that everyone was responsible for a lifelong education.

Upon his death in 1973, Mr. Goodrich left most of his estate to Liberty Fund for the purpose of exploring the many dimensions of liberty. His widow, Enid Goodrich (1903-1996), likewise, left a large portion of her estate to Liberty Fund at the time of her passing in 1996.

Mission “To develop, supervise and finance educational activities to foster thought and encourage discourse on enduring issues pertaining to liberty” The Opportunity

The President and CEO will ensure donor intent and advance the organization’s mission to preserve, restore, and develop individual liberty through investigation, research, and education activity. He or she will enact Mr. Goodrich’s vision and principles by strengthening operations and innovating programs.

The President reports to the Board of Directors. He or she will lead an interdisciplinary professional staff focused on preserving and furthering Liberty Fund’s mission as expressed in the Liberty Fund Basic Memorandum. He or she will be expected to strengthen the institution, champion a mission-oriented culture, and build partnerships in the wider community of like- minded educational institutions.

Responsibilities

• Preserves the mission and safeguards donor intent in all Liberty Fund’s programs • Responsible for risk management and regulatory compliance, including compliance with tax, regulatory and other laws applicable to Liberty Fund • Manages and continually improves operations • Stewards the preservation and growth of Liberty Fund’s endowment • Articulates the role of Liberty Fund among organizations seeking to advance liberty and to broader audiences • Stewards and strengthens the Liberty Fund’s financial, intellectual, and social capital • Thinks strategically and critically about partnerships with like-minded organizations • Participates in policy development with the Board of Directors • Provides intellectual direction to the content of Liberty Fund’s programs, and actively participates in the design and execution of these programs • Oversees the exploration and development of all the programs and submits them to the approval of the Board of Directors • Hires, inspires, and leads professional staff in an effective and collaborative manner • Serves as a senior mentor to the staff and encourages their professional development • Champions a mission-oriented culture developing metrics of success where possible • Directly supervises the Vice President and Controller, the Vice President of Educational Programs, the Director of Publications, the Director of Information Technology, and the Directors of each web property • Operates out of Liberty Fund’s Carmel’s headquarters and travels extensively, including significant weekend travel Attributes and Qualifications

The President will be an intellectually curious and continual learner who seeks to understand a broad spectrum of viewpoints. Thoughtful and deliberative, this leader will act with a high degree of integrity.

Education: Master’s degree or equivalent; or fifteen years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Executive leadership experience: Minimum of 10 years of experience in executive roles

Leadership style: Collaborative and excellence-driven
