MercyMe's Bart Millard thought his father was going to kill him. As a boy, Millard endured three or four beatings a week — but he eventually got the dad he always wanted. Arthur Millard Jr., at a time his son Bart called "his biggest and scariest." The elder Millard once was 360 pounds. (Photo: Submitted) His dad switched from a razor strap to a wooden paddle halfway through the beating. Bart Millard, only 8 or 9, was terrified. He’d been beaten before, often. But this time was different. Bart Millard, lead singer of Christian band MercyMe, said the worst pain he ever felt was when his father said, "I don't care." His father ambushed him and grabbed the boy with one arm, waling away with the other with a growing rage his son hadn’t seen before. “He beat me like a dog on a leash,” Millard said. “When I made eye contact with him, I thought: He’s going to kill me.” After that, the boy missed two days of school — it hurt too much for him to put on clothes. The physical scars have faded, and Millard, 45, lead singer of popular Christian band MercyMe, eventually found peace with his father shortly before his father died. In fact, it was his father’s death that launched Millard’s musical success. His band, MercyMe, had its first breakthrough with the song, “I Can Only Imagine,” a song Millard wrote about his father dying. About 15 years after that single crossed over onto pop radio charts, Millard is out with a book of the same name and a movie — starring Dennis Quaid — to tell the painful, confusing and redemptive story about his dad and himself. Everyone called him 'Bub' Arthur Millard Jr., Bart Millard's dad, an an All-American football player in Greeneville, Texas. (Photo: Submitted) Millard’s dad wasn’t always a monster. In fact, Arthur Wesley Millard Jr. was a beloved high school football hero, one of only two All-Americans from his rural Texas town of Greeneville, about 45 miles northeast of Dallas. Everyone called him “Bub,” and even though he was a big bear of a guy, he was more teddy than grizzly. Until the accident. Growing tensions. When he regained consciousness, “Bub” was a different guy. His attitude and temperament darkened. Combative with orderlies, crude with nurses, Arthur Millard eventually was restrained. Three years later, the couple’s second child, Bart, was born. Tension in the house grew, and Millard's parents divorced when the boy was only 3. Bart Millard as a baby in 1973 with his father, then 30, and his brother, Stephen, then 4. (Photo: Submitted) Millard lived with his mother at first. But, after his mother decided to move out of town with her third husband, Millard and his older brother moved in with their dad when Millard was in third grade. At first, spankings were only a few pops on the bottom. But punishment became longer and more intense. Millard often felt like his dad was taking out anger and frustration that had nothing to do with his children’s behavior. But after the whippings, a kind word. If dad got cut off in traffic, Millard might get a beating. If the Dallas Cowboys lost, another beating. The whippings came as often as three or four times a week, and the boy lived in constant fear, and yet… Eventually, after the beatings, Millard’s father would hoist the boy onto his lap, apologize for losing his temper and hold him while the two watched TV. Millard craved that kindness. Bart Millard and his wife, Shannon (Photo: Submitted) “While I didn’t always understand the severity of the punishment versus the actual crime,” Millard wrote in his book, "I still always savored those moments of father-and-son intimacy.” Millard said he sometimes would intentionally set off his father so his dad would get the paddle. “Because I knew then that afterward, we could then cuddle up and watch TV together,” he wrote. “Sad? Yes. But true.” A child trauma expert at Vanderbilt University said that it’s not unusual for children to crave attention and love from abusive parents. Clinical psychologist Jon Ebert — who has never met Millard and has no firsthand knowledge of the situation — said it’s what makes childhood trauma so complicated. “Most trauma experts would hear this description, and it wouldn’t be surprising,” Ebert said. “It highlights how attachment trumps all. That need to be loved and taken care of is so strong in a child that a child is willing to endure and even blame themselves.” The first time he saw his father cry. Millard never saw his worst beating coming. That day at school, he signed his father’s name to a notification that the boy made honor roll — Millard usually wanted to avoid most contact with his dad, even if it was good news — and handed in the form. But Millard was pretty bad at forgery. The teachers thought it was so cute the boy signed his dad’s name that they called his father at work to tell him. Bart Millard, back right, with his family. Millard’s father rushed home to lie in wait for his younger son. Right after the boy walked through the sliding glass door, he felt the sting of the razor strap on the back of his legs. The whipping continues for several minutes. “All of a sudden, I’m like, ‘He’s gonna kill me,’” Millard said. “He beat me all the way through the house. Everything on me hurt so badly I couldn’t lay on my back.” The boy cried in the dark in his room for hours, until his dad exploded through the door, flipped on the light and shouted, “It’s about time you stop crying!” Then his father stopped: He saw the dark welts and the deep purple and black bruises on his boy’s back. “That’s the first time I heard my dad cry,” Millard said. Moving away — and missing his dad. The worst beating was the last. After that, Arthur Millard, afraid of what he might do next, sent his younger son to live with his mother and her new husband in San Antonio, Texas. But father and son stayed in touch. At dad’s suggestion, they recorded messages to each other on portable cassette players, sending the Maxell tape back and forth. Millard found that he hated living with his mom — and he really missed his dad. Bart Millard, right, in sixth grade, with his older brother, Stephen, then a high school junior. This picture was taken right around the time their father stopped beating Bart. (Photo: Submitted) And at the end of sixth grade, Millard moved back in with his dad. The two occasionally clashed and got into a handful of physical altercations, but there were no more beatings. That didn’t stop Arthur from doing something his son thought was far worse than the beatings. Millard's dad found out his son, one night in seventh grade, got drunk at a party. The dad’s reaction? Total apathy, from that point on. “He said, ‘Do what you want, I don’t care anymore.’ He never let up from that.” The two hardly spoke to each other. Millard could disappear for days at a time, and his dad wouldn’t say a word about it. And that stung more than the razor strap. “That is the most painful thing he’s ever done in my life.” Cancer. Millard turned to his local church youth group to fill the void, a group his dad called “cultish.” Two years later, Millard's dad, 44, was diagnosed with cancer, a disease that would prove to be fatal four years later. Bart Millard's dad, Arthur, in early 1991, about 10 months before he died from cancer (Photo: Submitted) It was a rocky four years, but their relationship got smoother as his dad got sicker. Eventually, his dad told Millard he was proud of him, told the teen to chase his dreams of being a singer. The old man had even set it up so Millard would get $600 a month for 10 years to support those dreams. The father he always wanted. Millard's father often fell asleep reading the Bible, no longer deriding his son’s involvement in church, even shocking his son one night by asking him, “Can I pray for you?” That sent Millard’s faith into hyperdrive. “If the gospel could change that guy,” Millard figured, “the gospel could change anybody.” Millard and his father became friends, chatting for two hours each night as the teen administered a treatment through his dad’s IV. They talked about what would happen after Arthur died, who Millard should or shouldn’t be dating, all sorts of things. Bart Millard as a senior in high school just months before his father died. This is the last picture of the two of them together (Photo: Submitted) Arthur Millard died Nov. 11, 1991, with both of his sons by his side. And that’s the first time Millard got mad at God. “I finally got the dad I wanted, and he left.” At the gravesite, Millard’s grandmother, a woman of faith, said, “I can only imagine what Bub’s seeing now.” Poster for upcoming movie "I Can Only Imagine", the story of the song written by MercyMe lead singer Bart Millard (Photo: Submitted) Millard became obsessed with the phrase “I can only imagine,” toyed with it for years, and finally wrote the song in 1998. He said he got his dad’s last $600 check the week the song hit No. 1 on Christian radio charts. ISBN 13: 9780785216735.
