MercyMe's Bart Millard thought his father was going to kill him. As a boy, Millard endured three or four beatings a week — but he eventually got the dad he always wanted. Arthur Millard Jr., at a time his son Bart called "his biggest and scariest." The elder Millard once was 360 pounds. (Photo: Submitted) His dad switched from a razor strap to a wooden paddle halfway through the beating. Bart Millard, only 8 or 9, was terrified. He’d been beaten before, often. But this time was different. Bart Millard, lead singer of Christian band MercyMe, said the worst pain he ever felt was when his father said, "I don't care." His father ambushed him and grabbed the boy with one arm, waling away with the other with a growing rage his son hadn’t seen before. “He beat me like a dog on a leash,” Millard said. “When I made eye contact with him, I thought: He’s going to kill me.” After that, the boy missed two days of school — it hurt too much for him to put on clothes. The physical scars have faded, and Millard, 45, lead singer of popular Christian band MercyMe, eventually found peace with his father shortly before his father died. In fact, it was his father’s death that launched Millard’s musical success. His band, MercyMe, had its first breakthrough with the song, “I Can Only Imagine,” a song Millard wrote about his father dying.
