Collections include more than 150 million items, in over 400 languages, to which three million new items are added every year. The Library is a world-class cultural and intellectual resource that serves the needs of today’s researchers as well as being the custodian of the nation’s written and spoken heritage. Sandi Toksvig 9 JOB PROFILE SECTION 1 Job title: Head of Development Post number: 6882 Grade: SB3 Role group: Strategic Leader Directorate: Strategic Marketing and Communications Department: Development Office Reports to: Director of Strategic Marketing & Communications Location: St Pancras Date: August 2010 SECTION 2 Job purpose: To lead all fundraising across the British Library and to maximise income and other significant contributions from individuals, corporations, trusts and other grant-making bodies Key areas of responsibility • To take ownership of and develop the Library’s fundraising strategy, ensuring its delivery by working in partnership with colleagues across the institution • To complete Campaign for the British Library and achieve our £50m campaign goal • To grow and maximise the effectiveness of the Library’s Development Group, fostering strong relationships with individual members and leveraging their networks and contacts • To develop and manage a portfolio of major donors and prospects • To lead and manage the Development Office team Resources managed • The Development Office team, which currently comprises a team of 12 10 Main tasks 1. To establish the Library’s fundraising strategy and to set in place annual business plans and targets, and monitor performance against them 2. To lead fundraising organisation-wide, working in partnership with teams across the Library, advising on the development of new projects and propositions, and making clear the requirements for fundraising success 3. To manage the Development Office team within the framework of the Library’s performance management system 4. To refresh the Case for Support and key fundraising themes for Campaign for the British Library 5. To grow the body of Senior Volunteers participating in Library fundraising, and increase the overall contribution of the Development Group and the British Library Board, particularly to the Campaign 6. To manage a portfolio of major donor/grant-maker/sponsor relationships, adding new names and maximising income from new and existing supporters; to advise and support the Chairman, the Chief Executive and other senior officers on how they might best help develop some of these high level relationships 7. Ensure that systems are in place to enable efficient management across the breadth of the Library’s fundraising/donor relationships and to provide high quality management information 8. To take overall responsibility for the Library’s relationships with the Friends of the British Library, the American Trust for the British Library, and to serve as Secretary to Americans for the British Library, Inc 9. To keep abreast of fundraising trends, Government policy and public opinion on philanthropy, advising the Library on the potential impact of such matters and factoring them into fundraising plans as appropriate 10. To make a wider contribution to the Library by playing an active role on the Senior Leadership Team and Strategic Marketing & Communications senior management group. 11 Minimum requirements (essential) Able to demonstrate a substantial track record of securing major contributions (including seven-figure sums) and sustaining a portfolio of major donor relationships; must show a high level of comfort with face-to-face asking Proven leadership skills and experience of managing a team across more than one fundraising discipline Experience of working closely with Chairmen/Chief Executives and Senior Volunteers Sophisticated understanding of the fundraising market place and current trends across individuals, trusts, corporations and major donors An ability to translate the work of a large, complex organisation into a clear case for support Sound financial acumen and good knowledge of UK charitable giving and taxation law as applies to fundraising Excellent presentation and negotiation skills; must have an engaging personal presence and an ability to exert influence Educated to degree level A lively interest in and understanding of the role of the British Library and a passionate belief in its mission Desirable Experience of fundraising beyond the UK Additional information Must be able to travel internationally as necessary, and to work flexibly including evenings on a regular
