Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 ABSTRACT In this thesis, I argue that the life course is an entanglement of moralities, time, and selves. Through analysis of women’s intimate relationships, I suggest that life course transformation is a complex process where the self is simultaneously being formed and being dissolved. More specifically, I explore women’s conscious deliberations into what it means to live an ethical life according to values that shift and evolve over time. Time in the life course may be experienced with a sense of forward motion, yet life is comprised of multiple, overlapping moments and is infinite in its nature. Women live the life of this world in order to enjoy the life of the other world; a life understood as one’s destiny and one that is infinite with the potential to do more, be more, and have more than the present moment. Ultimately this is a thesis that describes the complex substances of daily life. 3 IMPACT STATEMENT This thesis aims to make contributions to the discipline of anthropology, to area studies focusing on the Horn of Africa, and to public health policy and practice. It problematizes common representations and moral evaluations of Muslims, Somalis, and women by relying on Somali women’s descriptions of their intimate relationships. Within the discipline of anthropology this thesis contributes to an existing body of work in the anthropology of Islam, anthropology of the body, postcolonial theory, life course development, and an anthropology of ethics and morality. It does so by (1) exploring women’s everyday intimate relationships to illuminate the complex nature of life and the life course, while providing a counter narrative to the ‘flattening out’ of Somali women; (2) reconfiguring life course models to include a theory of entanglement. This includes (a) building on Achille Mbembe’s (1992, 2001) theory of entanglement by revealing a simultaneity of moralities, time, and selves, and recontextualizing entanglement in everyday experiences; (b) analysing how women negotiate sometimes competing moralities and values; and (c) extending temporality in the life course to include the life of the other world. Next, this thesis contributes to the discipline of anthropology by (3) proposing an introductory theory of destiny as a ‘middle ground’ by focusing on everyday experiences of belief in God’s omnipotence and ‘working’ on destiny; and finally by (4) identifying the emergence of a ‘new morality’ being forged by young, urban women. This ‘new morality’ reflects their conceptions of what it means to be modern, and illuminates a counter-narrative to pervading discourse on Islam and women in Somalia/Somaliland. This thesis contributes to a growing scholarship on gendered experiences in the Horn of Africa, namely Somaliland. It draws on observations of everyday life in the family, on the bus, at the market, during cooking, in worship, at rites of passage like marriages, and the everyday conversations I had with women. This focus illuminates the intimacies of women’s daily lives and presents a counter-narrative to the ‘flattening out’ of the complexity of women’s lives. It shows that the simplistic narrative often told about Somali women in the media and present in public discourse fails to reveal that women are many things, at many times; they are not just passive victims or agentive rebels. Within public health policy and practice this thesis contributes to approaches of addressing discourse around gender and body modification. The medium of ethnography here serves to contextualise the experiences of Somali women so that iNGOs, which sometimes influence public health practice, can have a cultural ‘blueprint’. Additionally this thesis illuminates the complexities of body modification, including female genital cutting, and the influences and constraints women have when working on their bodies.     “Bringing together Somali civil society in the quest for peace” Civil society meeting Entebbe, 11-13 March 2008 Introduction From 11-13 March 2008, over 150 leaders of Somali civil society gathered at the Imperial Beach Resort Hotel in Entebbe, Uganda. The group included: Somali NGOs, business leaders, professional associations, women’s groups, religious leaders, academics, the media, and traditional leaders. Almost half of the group are members of the Somali expatriate community, who travelled from as far afield as Australia, Canada and Scandinavia. It has been an unprecedented gathering of such a wide-ranging and influential group of civil society. The prospect of recovery and peace-building in Somalia rests in large part on civil society, which can be a catalyst for social, political and economic change. The purpose of this meeting was two-fold: first, to foster a more collective voice among the diverse sectors and groups of Somali civil society, both those living within Somalia and those living outside; and second, to begin to build consensus among this group on how the Somali civil society can most effectively and constructively contribute to peace-building in Somalia. Discussion was intense and animated over the three days of meetings, both in plenary session, and in the various working groups on, for instance, the role of women, the business community, and of the diaspora in peace-building. The meeting was also attended by selected representatives of the international community who had the opportunity to interact with the wide range of Somali participants. Despite the intensive nature of the meeting, with side sessions continuing late into the evenings, the atmosphere throughout was cordial and constructive, generating a spirit of hope and empowerment in the midst of the challenges faced by the Somali people.

ISSN 1020-7473 Introduction The classical definition of refugee contained in the 1951 Refugee Convention was ill- suited to the majority of African refugees, who started fleeing in large numbers in the 1960s and 1970s. These refugees were by and large not the victims of state persecution, but of civil wars and the collapse of law and order. Hence the 1969 OAU Refugee Convention expanded the definition of “refugee” to include these reasons for flight. Furthermore, the refugee-dissidents of the 1950s fled mainly as individuals or in small family groups and underwent individual refugee status determination: in-depth interviews to determine their eligibility to refugee status according to the criteria set out in the Convention. The mass refugee movements that took place in Africa made this approach impractical. As a result, refugee status was granted on a prima facie basis, that is with only a very summary interview or often simply with registration - in its most basic form just the name of the head of family and the family size.1 In the Somali context the implementation of this approach has proved problematic.

    Book Reviews/Comptes rendus REBECCA POPENOE, Feeding Desire: Fatness, Beauty, and Sexuality Among a Saharan People. London and New York: Routledge, 2004, xv + 230 p. The glorification of thinness in Western culture, and concomitantly women‟s conflicted relationships with their bodies and food, has been well documented in sociological and anthropological literature. In Feeding Desire, Rebecca Popenoe presents the reader with a refreshingly different perspective, one in which fatness is considered the ideal for women. Yet, what is, in fact, most remarkable about this study is the evident similarities among women of decidedly dissimilar societies. Through fieldwork in a small village in Niger, Popenoe examines the practice of “fattening” among Azawagh Arab women, more commonly known as Moors. While this is a pre-marriage tradition in other cultures, the Azawagh Arabs begin fattening their female children from a very young age and the practice continues throughout their lives. Popenoe argues that fatness is valued not for the “practical” reasons often identified (such as its association with fertility or wealth), but, rather, for purely aesthetic reasons. This observation alone makes the text interesting; especially for those of us embedded in a culture that invokes both biomedical and moral arguments against corpulence. But the text also takes a multidimensional view of this practice, understanding it in the context of other factors, such as marriage and patrilineal arrangements, the centrality of Islam, blood ties and milk kinship, the intricacies of the humoral system, and an especially interesting consideration of gender and space. Moreover, Popenoe demonstrates the importance of the body, both literally and metaphorically, in an environment where few material belongings exist.

    Pastoral Days CAMTUK, Somaliland February 2000 By Marc Michaelson Abdulkarim rapidly counts off his ancestors on his fingers, the names rolling off his tongue in a smooth rhythm. "Ahmed, Moge, Libaan, Hassan, Hode, Geele, Sharma'arke..." And on and On. He pauses, unsure of;whether he just listed 20 or 25 generations, and settles on the more conservative number. In about a minute, he has traced his descen- dants for 400 to 500 years. These "grandfathers" provide Somalis a sense of rootedness and identity. They are also a tremendous source of pride this one bravely defended clan territories, that one multiplied prodigiously, another was particularly learned in the teachings of the Prophet Mohammed. Some are revered as warriors, others for camel-herding prowess or generosity to the poor. The respect is deep, almost mythical. All Somalis learn clan history and are required to memorize the names of the founders. Abdulkarim comes from the Eidagelleh, a sub-clan of Somaliland's Isaaq majority. With the help of fellow Eidagellehs in a tea shop in Camtuk, Abdulkarim draws a clan chart. They start with Da'uud, the father of the Eidagelleh, and work their way down. They list all of his sons, and their sons, and so on. The men are chewing khat, drinking sugary tea with camel milk and laughing as they men- tion the different clan families. After one particularly rowdy exchange, I ask what's so funny. "Abib Mahamed's fam- ily was so small we don't break them down into further sub- clans." This is a shame on the fam- ily they were unable to increase their numbers, one of the cardinal responsibilities of the clan.
