Adams Chair, Graduate Committee Accepted for the Department Dr. Brad Rawlins Graduate Coordinator Accepted for the College Rory Scanlon Associate Dean College of Fine Arts and Communications ABSTRACT SOWING THE SEEDS OF WAR: THE NEW YORK TIMES’ COVERAGE OF JAPANESE-AMERICAN TENSIONS, A PRELUDE TO CONFLICT IN THE PACIFIC, 1920-1941 David Robert Schreindl Department of Communications Master of Arts This thesis examines the New York Times’ coverage of unique generational influences between Japan and the United States from 1920 through the start of hostilities at Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The purpose of this project was to see if the Times gave Americans an accurate picture of the relationship between the two countries or to determine if there was a lapse in coverage exhibiting negligence on the part of this prominent paper. This thesis concludes that the New York Times was not negligent in its coverage of the issues prior to World War II. However, it was the Times’ inconsistent placement of its news articles about Japan with them never being in the same place in the newspaper and the gaps of time between coverage of specific topics. That meant only those with a v keen interest in what was happening in Japan and Japan’s attitude toward America would have had the determination and ability to put all the puzzle pieces together from the truck load of material to realize Japan’s increasing irritation with America and its view of an unavoidable war. The warnings were there if you were willing to look for them. vi ACKNOWLEDGMENTS First and foremost, I must thank my wife, Cheryl, for the inspiration to complete this ambitious project. Without her moral compass in my life I wouldn’t have even thought about returning to school and enjoying the fruits of this labor. Her willingness to leave her country and home and be my wife and then the wonderful mother of our wonderful daughter Amber has meant the world to me and given me the strength to make it though the dark times and appreciated the light times. I also must apologize for the many lonely days this project left her will and promise to always put her first so I’m home a little more often. These articles established export and import tariffs and the concept of "extraterritoriality" (i.e., Japan held no jurisdiction over foreign criminals in its land. NEW JERSEY ... “TYPHOON COBRA,” DECEMBER 18, 1944 - Thousands of US sailors serving aboard the 130 plus ships of Task Force 38, rode out a terrible storm on December 18, 1944, and it is sadly remembered today as “Typhoon Cobra.” This storm resulted in 3 capsized destroyers, the loss of 790 men, the total destruction of 146 badly needed combat aircraft, and brought crippling dam- age to many ships. Especially hard hit were the CVL’s (Light Aircraft Carriers,) and CVE’s (Escort Carriers.) At the time, USS NEW JERSEY (BB-62) was serving as fleet flagship for Task Force 38, and was under the command of Admiral William “Bull” Halsey. Today, as The Jerseyman commemorates this tragic World War 2 event, we are privileged to include stories of the storm as it was experienced by many of the sailors who were there. During our typhoon research, we were also fortunate to have had contact with Mr. Richard A. Strand, brother of lost USS SPENCE crewman Robert L. Strand. Mr. Strand has compiled an extensive amount of material about his brother’s ship. He graciously shared this information with The Jerseyman, and for many years, has offered his efforts at no cost, to the families of USS SPENCE crewmen. Along with the USS SPENCE’s history, his research contains many operating charts for the ship, and an excerpt from the Presidential Unit Citation (PUC), that USS SPENCE had received as part of Arleigh Burke’s famous “Little Beaver” Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 23.

    Special Statement Calling for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons and Lasting World Peace 23 May 2016 71 years ago, an atomic bomb, the first nuclear weapon used in human history, was dropped on Hiroshima. In an instant, the scorching heat of the flash and the shock wave of the blast completely destroyed the city of Hiroshima. Many precious lives were lost, and numerous others sustained injuries. A nuclear-weapon-free world is a long-term desire of all the prefectures of the Chugoku Region including Hiroshima Prefecture, a prefecture that has experienced firsthand the inhumane nature of nuclear weapons. However, there are still enough nuclear weapons in existence in the world to annihilate all life, and the risk of their proliferation and use is ever increasing on a global scale. We believe that President Obama’s visit to Hiroshima marks a historic resolution that inspires courage around the world at a time when progress towards the abolition of nuclear weapons is stagnant. We at the Chugoku Region Governors Association pay our highest respects to President Obama for his visit to Hiroshima.     Five College Center for East Asian Studies National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) 2012 Japan Study Tour The Human and Physical Geography of Japan Reports from the Field United States Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad with additional funding from the Freeman Foundation Five College Center for East Asian Studies 69 Paradise Road, Florence Gilman Pavilion Northampton, MA 01063 The Human and Physical Geography of Japan Reports from the Field In the summer of 2012, twelve educators from across the United States embarked on a four-week journey to Japan with the goal of enriching their classroom curriculum content by learning first-hand about the country. Prior to applying for the study tour, each participant completed a 30-hour National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) seminar. Once selected, they all completed an additional 20 hours of pre-departure orientation, including FCCEAS webinars (funded by the US-Japan Foundation; archived webinars are available at www.smith.edu/fcceas), readings, and language podcasts. Under the overarching theme of “Human and Physical Geography of Japan,” the participants’ experience began in Tokyo, then continued in Sapporo, Yokohama, Kamakura, Kyoto, Osaka, Nara, Hiroshima, Miyajima, and finally ended in Naha. Along the way they heard from experts on Ainu culture and burakumin, visited the Tokyo National Museum of History, heard the moving testimony of an A-bomb survivor, toured the restored seat of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and dined on regional delicacies. Each study tour participant was asked to prepare a report on an assigned geography-related topic to be delivered to the group in country and then revised upon their return to the U.S.

    CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE Ending the Pacific War: The New History RICHARD B. FRANK In 1945, and for approximately two decades thereafter, no significant American controversy attended the use of atomic weapons to end the Pacific War. A national consensus assembled around three basic premises: (a) the use of the weapons was justified; (b) the weapons ended the war; and (c) that in at least a rough utilitarian sense, employment of the weapons was morally justified as saving more lives than they cost (Walker 1990 , 2005 ; Bernstein 1995 ). The historian Michael Sherry branded this as “The Patriotic Orthodoxy” (Sherry 1996 ). Beginning in the mid-1960s challenges appeared to “The Patriotic Orthodoxy.” The pejorative label “revisionists” was sometimes pelted at these challengers, but a more accurate term is just critics. The critics developed a canon of tenets that, in their purest incarnation, likewise formed a trio: (a) Japan’ s strategic situation in the summer of 1945 was catastrophically hopeless; (b) Japan ’ s leaders recognized their hopeless situation and were seeking to surrender; and (c) American leaders, thanks to the breaking of Japanese diplomatic codes, knew Japan hovered on the verge of surrender when they unleashed needless nuclear devastation. The critics mustered a number of reasons for the unwarranted use of atomic weapons, but the most provocative by far marches under the banner “atomic diplomacy”: the real target of the weapons was not Japan, but the Soviet Union (Walker 1990 , 2005 ; Bernstein 1995 ). These two rival narratives clashed along a cultural fault line most spectacularly in the “Enola Gay” controversy in 1995 over the proposed text of a Smithsonian Institution exhibit of the fuselage of the plane that dropped the first atomic bomb.
