The State of São Paulo, with 40 million people and 34% of Brazil’s GNP responds for 52% of the science created in Brazil.The state hosts important universities like the University of São Paulo (USP) and the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), the growing São Paulo State University (UNESP), Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), Federal University of ABC (ABC is a metropolitan region in São Paulo), Federal University of São Carlos, the Aeronautics Technology Institute (ITA) and the National Space Research Institute (INPE). Universities in the state of São Paulo have strong graduate programs: the University of São Paulo forms two thousand doctorates every year, the State University of Campinas forms eight hundred and the University of the State of São Paulo six hundred. -

A synopsis of the Syntretus Foerster species of Taiwan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae: Euphorinae). J. Agric. Res. China 53:39-62. The present synopsis is the first review of the Syntretus Foerster species distributed in Taiwan. Twelve species are revised of which seven proved to be new to science: S. choui sp. n., S. extensus sp. n., S. secutensus sp. n., S. subglaber sp. n., S. temporalis sp. n., S. transitus sp. n. and S. varus sp. n. The rear five species are new to the fauna of Taiwan. Detailed descriptions are presented for the new species; taxonomic remarks are added to the known species. A key is provided for the twelve Syntretus species recorded in Taiwan and completed with 84 original figures of diagnostic significance. A checklist was compiled for the Syntretus species of the East Palaearctic and Oriental Regions. Key words: Braconidae, Syntretus, New species, New record, Key to species, Taiwan, Checklist. Introduction The genus Syntretus Foerster, 1862 is a middle-sized taxon comprising 31 species in the Holarctic Region (28 species are listed in the Palaearctic Region, three species in the Nearctic Region) and three species in the Ethiopian Region (Shenefelt 1969; Tobias 1986; Belokobylskij 1993b, 1996; Chen & van Achterberg 1997). In the Oriental Region the first Syntretus species has been described by Belokobylskij (1993a). This paper is the second one reporting Syntretus species from the Oriental Region. -

Thus, it is particularly important to develop alternative strategies to control this pest. Over a 4-year period, a survey was done in order to acquire knowledge about the complex of parasitoids associated with this pest. Leaves, flowers, and fruit infested with larvae and pupae of P. oleae were collected from olive groves, conditioned in vials, and kept under laboratory conditions until the emergence of P. ol e ae adults or parasitoids. The abundance and richness of parasitoids as well as the rate of parasitism was estimated. Hymenoptera parasitoids were found to be responsible for 43% of the mean mortality of the sampled individuals. -

Desde que en el siglo XVII el italiano Marcelo Malpighi (Crevalcore, 1628 - Roma, 1694) descubriera la relación causa-efecto entre un insecto y su agalla, numerosos naturalistas y científicos han centrado sus esfuerzos en estas estructuras vegetales, hasta hacer de la Cecidología (Ciencia que se ocupa del estudio de las agallas de las plantas) una ciencia de ámbito multidisciplinar que se asienta en estudios ecológicos, morfológicos y estructurales, etiológicos, taxonómicos, faunísticos, histológicos, fisiológicos, genéticos, etc. En este estudio se hará un repaso de que son las agallas y de los distintos estudios que pueden realizarse a partir de las agallas producidas por los Cynipidae (Hymenoptera). Palabras Clave: agallas, encinos, ecosistema, estudios. The oak galls: a miniature ecosystem which makes possible multidisciplinary studies ABSTRACT. Since the Italian Marcelo Malpighi (Crevalcore, 1628 - Roma, 1694) discovered the cause and effect relationship between an insect and its gall in the XVII century, many naturalists and scientists have focused their efforts in these plant structures to make for the Cecidology (science that deals with the study of plants galls) a multidisciplinary science based on different branches: ecologic, morphological, structural, etiologic, taxonomic, faunistic, histologic, physiologic, genetic, etc. In this work a review of what the galls are and the diverse studies which can be carried out from the Cynipidae (Hymenoptera) galls is made. Sanchiz (*) RESUMEN Durante el periodo 1978-1994 se han descrito cerca de 2.000 especies animales nue- vas para la ciencia en territorio ibérico-balear. Se presenta como apéndice un listado completo de las especies (1978-1993), ordenadas taxonómicamente, así como de sus referencias bibliográficas. Como tendencias generales en este proceso de inventario de la biodiversidad se aprecia un incremento moderado y sostenido en el número de taxones descritos, junto a una cada vez mayor contribución de los autores españoles. Es cada vez mayor el número de especies publicadas en revistas que aparecen en el Science Citation Index, así como el uso del idioma inglés. La mayoría de los phyla, clases u órdenes mues- tran gran variación en la cantidad de especies descritas cada año, dado el pequeño núme- ro absoluto de publicaciones. Los insectos son claramente el colectivo más estudiado, pero se aprecia una disminución en su importancia relativa, asociada al incremento de estudios en grupos poco conocidos como los nematodos. Supplement1 Witli 3 text figures Introduction The main body of information on the Alysiinae (mostly Dacnusini) as parasites of the Agromyzidae in Europe remains my 1964 — 68 series of papers in this journal under the title “The Alysiinae parasites of the Agromyzidae”. This treated the parasites of all genera of Agromyzidae except Phytobia L io y ( = Dendromyza H e n d e l ), whose larvae feed in the cambium of trees and have rarely been reared. The occasion of the deposition of my European collection of Alysiinae, on which my published work was partly based, in the British Museum (Natural History) prompts me to publish this supplement. Included are the descriptions of ten new species which were reared too late for inclusion in my previous work, together with additional rearing records which extend the known host range or geographical distribution of the parasite species. I have also given selective corrections of host records in cases where the nomenclatural changes resulting from recent research on agromyzid taxonomy may be confusing to hymenopterists. Also one case where my identification of a parasite requires correction has come to light. Since 1968 little additional information on the life-history of the Alysiinae as parasites of the Agromyzidae has been published. M ic h a e s k a (1973a, 1973b) has published a block of Polish records for 34 parasite and 28 host species. -

Keys for Nocturnal Workshop April 2018
Keys for the identification of British and Irish nocturnal Ichneumonidae Gavin R. Broad Dept. of Life Sciences, Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, London SW7 5BD; email: [email protected] Introduction These notes and draft keys support the Nocturnal Ichneumonoidea Recording Scheme (http://nocturnalichs.myspecies.info/), concentrating on Ichneumonidae. The main emphasis here is on the species of Ophioninae, a subfamily of predominantly nocturnal species, and on the species of Netelia. The keys and notes presented here are mostly rather rough and ready, although keys to Cidaphus and Enicospilus are taken from published papers. Some illlustrations have been copied from published sources: Ophion from Brock (1982), Cidaphus from Fitton (1985), Enicospilus from Broad & Shaw (2016) and Netelia (Netelia) from Konishi (2005). Kazuhiko Konishi has also kindly sent me a draft plate with his drawings of Netelia (Bessobates) male genitalia, based on British specimens. A few of my own images are included. Figures are numbered independently for each key. Dichotomous characters are listed first, confirmatory characters that are not reflected in the other half of the couplet are placed in square brackets. It is important to bear in mind that many species of Ophion and Netelia are not identifiable by single characters, instead several characters need to be evaluated in combination. The more specimens that you’ve amassed, the better, as it will then be easier to compare character states across species. These keys are not intended for formal publication in their current state but please do send this to anybody who may be interested in learning more about nocturnal ichneumonoids.
