Annual Meeting Troense, Denmark 30 June, 2017 ISCYRA 2017 ANNUAL MEETING TROENSE, DENMARK 30 JUNE, 2017 President Lars Grael called the meeting to order at 1816pm President’s Report Good evening Star sailors. Welcome to the 2017 Annual General meeting. This is an important moment for the Class when we decide our rules, events and our future. We are all sailors; members and members become officers. I was invited to become Class President in 2013 at the end of the Star Class Worlds in San Diego. I have been Fleet Captain, District Secretary and Judicial Board members and a member of the Long Range Planning Committee. Finances: we have approximately $800,000 in funds due to donations. Over the past few decades ISCYRA were facing losses in a proportion of $30-80k per year. The bank accounts had approximately $300k, which is a good amount, but if we kept at the same pace the Class would be down to zero. This group of officers took the responsibility to stop bleeding the Class. Since then NO officer, which are all volunteers, would travel for meetings and Championships on the Class expenses. Some decisions were taken to generate our economy. The Class office was moved from Annapolis to San Diego. By the end of the year, we plan to give the Class and the next President with a better bottom line. The Star Class Legacy Foundation has been created by Larry Whipple. 14 members have donated to the Foundation in the first 6 months of this year for a total of $150k. The Foundation has financed the infrastructure of the new website. In the question of governance, we believe it is healthy for the Class to alternate top officers. I will finish my term by the end of this year and we will have general elections. For President we have a candidate who is a Vice President, Silver Star and German members, Dr. Hubert Merkelbach. This means that it is open to other candidates of course, but I anticipate my clear support of Dr. Merkelbach. Boat production came back to full production for Lariovela. We now have 2 mast builders (Emetti and Burton). The SSL is a great and strategic partner. We have to thank Michel Niklaus and his impressive team, to put a modern and attractive regatta circuit that keeps the Star Class at the vanguard of the sailing sport. I have to assume that we failed with our ISAF/World Sailing relationship, since the Star Class lost the Olympic status in November 2012. We did our best, but ISAF President did all he could to ruin the keelboat discipline at the Olympic Games. This is a historical mistake. WS has changed and now we have a Star Class Gold Star and Olympic hero as Vice President – Torben Grael. For 2019 on, we have strong applications to make the World in places like Porto Cervo; Ilhabela; Newport Beach, CA, NYYC – Newport, RI. That was possible only because of the main class authority – YOU. ISCYRA 2017 ANNUAL MEETING TROENSE, DENMARK 30 JUNE I have to thank all my officers that worked as volunteers since I have accepted the challenge and to those officers in attendance: Dr. Hubert Merkelbach, Tom Lofsted, Phil Trinter, Admar Gonzaga; Helge Spear; John Mac Causland (TAB) and Andy MacDonald (JB Chairman). Honor the Past and Lead the Future is our goal. We need your support and engagement. Now, the meeting agenda will be conducted by Class Vice President Dr. Hubert Merkelbach. Hubert Merkelbach welcomed Commodore Dierk Thomsen. Minutes of the 2016 AGM: Please read the minutes that are posted on the website. Reports of officers: North America Phil Trinter reported on the US and the Miami Winter Series with strong support from Bacardi. 31 boats competed in the Great Lakes District with the Western Hemisphere in Cleveland, Ohio. 2018 schedule: NAs will be at Cal Yacht Club, Los Angeles, CA; WHC at Biscayne Bay YC just after the Bacardi Cup. 2019 schedule: WH in San Diego; NAs out of Toms River, NJ. Looking at NYYC to hold the Worlds. Europe Tom Lofsted reported that Europe has a successful European Winter Series with 4 regattas, each 3 days in length. Competitors ranged from 15-50 boats on the starting line: Nice Christmas Regatta, Primo Cup, Princess Grace Trophy and the finals in Sanremo. The Eastern Hemisphere was held in Viareggio the first week of June with 70 boats and the Europeans will be held in Sanremo the last week in October. South America Juan Pablo Englehard reported that Buenos Aires, Club Nautico Olivos will host the South Americans over 23-27 November. Some charters will be available but shipping may be better. 2018 the SAs may be held in Buzios, BRA. Ratification of the IRC and IJ - Thomas Jorgenson PRO. Ulrich Finckh will chair the Int. Jury with members Boguslaw Moczorodynski (POL IJ), Hans Vengberg (DEN IJ), Gerard Vervoort (NED NJ) and Thomas Nielsen (DEN IJ) Ratification & Revocation of Fleet charters: The IGC/CMC encourages all fleet officers to ensure that all members register as members annually. • A Pictorial History of the Star Class
A PICTORIAL HISTORY OF THE STAR CLASS 1911 2011 FOREWORD From its very beginning the Star Class has attracted photographers’ attention. Morris Rosenfeld and Edwin Levick were among the early photographers who took pictures of the Star. The beauty and power of the modern Star boat continues to be an object interest for both amateur and professional photographer. We are thus fortunate to have a fairly good pictorial record of the Star Class starting with those early days of 1911 when the Stars first put in an appearance on Long Island Sound and at Nahant Dory Club in Massachusetts. The Star Class also has a very good historical record of itself. An annual Log which lists the boats and their owners, gives race results, carries the Class Rules, and other pertinent information has been published since 1922. An additional source of information is available from Starlights, the Star Class newsletter which has been published since 1925. Added to these sources there are two history books about the Star Class: “Forty Years Among the Star”, written by George W. Elder, and “A History of the Star Class”, written by Class Historian and long-time Log and Starlights editor C. Stanley Ogilvy. It is the purpose of this pictorial history to bring together some of the more interesting photographs and events which have appeared in the Star Class publications. PRELUDE The Gaff Rigged Era 1911 – 1920 (and before) The history of the Star began even before 1911. In 1906 a boat called the Bug was designed in the office of William Gardner in New York.
