Email me at [email protected]. 6 Lake Michigan Sail Racing FederatioN November 2018 Lake Michigan SuRF newsmagazine safety WHAT I LEARNED ABOUT INFLATABLE PFDS by Glenn McCarthy I spent over a decade on the US Sailing Safety at Sea Committee. I marveled at the width and depth of knowledge of the members of this committee. I was not directly involved in getting inflatable Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) accepted by the U.S. Coast Guard. I was in the room when others who were directly involved reported on their progress. Other countries had already approved inflatables. The U.S. was behind. At first the U.S. Coast Guard would hear nothing of it. A foam lifejacket was 100% guaranteed to work every time. Inflatables do have a known failure rate of inflation. And even then, user maintenance increases the failure rate. That was completely unacceptable to the U.S. Coast Guard. The argument was made, "The foam PFDs sit in the bilge, in the lockers, many times still in their original wrapper, going unused and has a 0% chance of success of saving lives. They are hot on summer days to wear, where boating is a summer activity. Women don't like them, as they are not making them attractive. And they are bulky, in the way, and uncomfortable. Whereas a fanny pack or horseshoe inflatable is something people will wear (data from approved countries) regularly and greatly improves usage and chance of success." When an Australian boat came to the U.S. they had to buy U.S. Coast Guard approved foam PFDs to be in compliance with U.S. laws. The all women's Aussie sailboat came to Hawaii to race, bought U.S. Coast Guard approved foam PFDs, where they always wore their inflatables back home. They put the U.S. Coast Guard approved foam PFDs down below on the floor keeping that weight low, and left their inflatables ashore to save weight. They had a problem, ran into an island, sank the boat, and at least one of them drowned. Proof people wear inflatables, not foam PFDs, which resulted in death. The U.S.

    www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN Convergent Evolution of Boats with Sails A. Bejan1*, L. Ferber2 & S. Lorente3 This article unveils the geometric characteristics of boats with sails of many sizes, covering the range 102–105 kg. Data from one hundred boat models are collected and tabulated. The data show distinct trends of convergent evolution across the entire range of sizes, namely: (i) the proportionality between beam and draft, (ii) the proportionality between overall boat length and beam, and (iii) the proportionality between mast height and overall boat length. The review shows that the geometric aspect ratios (i)–(iii) are predictable from the physics of evolution toward architectures that ofer greater fow access through the medium. Nature impresses us with images, changes and tendencies that repeat themselves innumerable times even though “similar observations” are not identical to each other. In science, we recognize each ubiquitous tendency as a distinct phenomenon. Over the centuries, our predecessors have summarized each distinct phenomenon with its own law of physics, which then serves as a ‘frst principle’ in the edifce of science. A principle is a ‘frst principle’ when it cannot be deduced from other frst principles. Tis aspect of organization in science is illustrated by the evolution of thermodynamics to its current state1,2. For example, 150 years ago the transformation of potential energy into kinetic energy and the conservation of “caloric” were fused into one statement—the frst law of thermodynamics—which now serves as a frst-principle in physics. It was the same with another distinct tendency in nature: everything fows (by itself) from high to low.

    Meet the Competitors: Annapolis YC Double-handed Distance Race R.J. Cooper & Courtney Cooper Cumberland are a brother and sister team from Oxford, Maryland and Panama City, Florida. They have sailed together throughout their youth as well as while on the Sailing Team for the University of Florida. The pair has teamed up for a bid to represent the United States and win gold at the 2024 Olympics in Paris. They will be sailing Tenacious owned by AYC member Carl Gitchell. Sail #501 Erik Haaland and Andrew Waters will be sailing the new Italia Yachts 9.98 sport boat named Vichingio (Viking). Erik Haaland is the Sales Director for Italia Yachts USA at David Walters Yachts. He has sailed his entire life and currently races on performance sport boats including the Farr 30, Melges 32 and J70. Andrew Waters is a Sail and Service Consultant at Quantum Sails in Annapolis. His professional sailing career began in South Africa and later the Caribbean and includes numerous wins in large regattas. Sail #17261 Ethan Johnson and Cat Chimney have sailing experience in dinghies, foiling skiffs, offshore racers and mini-Maxis. Ethan, a Southern Maryland native now living in NY is excited to be racing in home waters. Cat was born on Long Island, NY but spent time in Auckland, New Zealand. She has sailed with Olympians, America’s Cup sailors and Volvo Ocean Race sailors. Cat is Technical Specialist and Rigger at the prestigious Oakcliff Sailing where Ethan also works as the Training Program Director. Earlier this year Cat and Ethan teamed up to win the Oakcliff Double-handed Melges 24 Distance Race.
