The Class organized great Silver Star events in North America, South America and Europe and you can find all informations and reports here in this present Star LOG. A big thank-you to Jerelyn and Sherri for this great work! The sailing highlights came in the end of the season 2018: Jorge Zarif and Guilherme de Almeida from Brazil won the STAR WORLD CHAMPIONS title. 60 boats were fighting for the title in Oxford/Maryland, and the members of Oxford Yacht Club showed outstanding hospitality. Another highlight was -only a couple of weeks later- the SSL finals in Nassau/Bahamas: 25 best-of-the-best world sailing teams racing against each other and the winner of the thrilling knock-out finale was -again- Jorge Zarif, this time sailing with Pedro Trouche. Meanwhile the 2019 season is fully underway. In February ISCYRA ran the first Junior World Championship in Miami after many years. Luke Lawrence/Alexey Selivanov won the title in a respectable fleet of 36 boats. As it was such a big success and fun, we have decided to organize more Junior Championships during the coming years. Bacardi Cup 2019 was again a fantastic, exciting regatta with almost 70 entries and a great and souvereign winning team of Eric Doyle and Payson Infelise in a super strong fleet. Let’s have a look in the near future: our next silver Star championship will be the first combined European Championship/SSL Breeze Grand Slam in Riva/Lake Garda. 100 teams on the starting line are expected and it will be a great sailing festival! What a big success for our Class! We will continue our positive partnership with Star Sailors League for the future. In Southern California the Western Hemisphere Championship will be organized by the prestigious San Diego Yacht Club, always a great venue, and great sailing is guaranteed! Later in the year the South Americans will take place in Buenos Aires in the traditional Club Nautico Olivos. We can proudly proclaim that the Star Class has positive activities all over the globe. Another highlight will be our World Championship this year in Porto Cervo, Italy - one of the best sailing venues in the world. The Star Class comes back to Porto Cervo exactly 30 years later after the Worlds 1989 and everybody who took part remembers enthusiastically this fantastic event. Continuing with the worlds finest venues ISCYRA will organize the following World Championship in February 2020 in Nassau/Bahamas. Behind the scenes ISCYRA officers are working hard to increase the quality process of organizing our regattas by creating a new MOU (Paul Cayard), which supplements our existing bid form. The close cooperation with our regatta manager PRO Carl Schellbach and jury chair Hans Vengberg ensures high quality in running our championships. While we have record participant numbers in our high level championships and „classic“ events we are aware that the number of participants of the local regattas are decreasing. We are analysing the different reasons of this phenomenon, which is obviously a problem in other classes as well, and will support fleets in this but also in other issues. If you need any help please let us know! Even more good news: Fortunately we are in the situation again that more and more Star boats are being built. Besides our well known Italian builders Folli and Lillia, the famous Carlsson boatyard in Sweden has started again in production. At the same time ISCYRA initiated a new process of quality control: our chief measurers (Jim Ryan, Guido Sodano) will visit all boatyards, who are producing Star boats

  • The Life-Cycle of the Barcelona Automobile-Industry Cluster, 1889-20151
The Life-Cycle of the Barcelona Automobile-Industry Cluster, 1889-20151 • JORDI CATALAN Universitat de Barcelona The life cycle of a cluster: some hypotheses Authors such as G. M. P. Swann and E. Bergman have defended the hy- pothesis that clusters have a life cycle.2 During their early history, clusters ben- efit from positive feedback such as strong local suppliers and customers, a pool of specialized labor, shared infrastructures and information externali- ties. However, as clusters mature, they face growing competition in input mar- kets such as real estate and labor, congestion in the use of infrastructures, and some sclerosis in innovation. These advantages and disadvantages combine to create the long-term cycle. In the automobile industry, this interpretation can explain the rise and decline of clusters such as Detroit in the United States or the West Midlands in Britain.3 The objective of this paper is to analyze the life cycle of the Barcelona au- tomobile- industry cluster from its origins at the end of the nineteenth centu- ry to today. The Barcelona district remained at the top of the Iberian auto- mobile clusters for a century. In 2000, when Spain had reached sixth position 1. Earlier versions of this paper were presented at the International Conference of Au- tomotive History (Philadelphia 2012), the 16th World Economic History Congress (Stellen- bosch 2012), and the 3rd Economic History Congress of Latin America (Bariloche 2012). I would like to thank the participants in the former meetings for their comments and sugges- tions. This research benefitted from the financial support of the Spanish Ministry of Econo- my (MINECO) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the projects HAR2012-33298 (Cycles and industrial development in the economic history of Spain) and HAR2015-64769-P (Industrial crisis and productive recovery in the Spanish history).

I will start with an exciting outlook in the near future: in less than 6 months we will sail our World Championship 2020 in Nassau/Bahamas from February 3rd-8th. Montagu Bay is one of the best sailing venues in the world: whoever was sailing here before, will come back again and everybody else should enter this fantastic event as well! Beside the sailing, Nassau Yacht Club will organize great social events fur us. Check out the program on our preliminary website, which will be updated continually. One month later in March 2020, Star sailors are invited to sail the prestigious Bacardi Cup in Miami, so don’t miss the chance to sail these two regattas in the worlds best sailing venues in a row. Looking back this season, we sailed our World Championship in Porto Cervo/Italy and are very proud to celebrate the new World Champions 2019 Mateusz Kusznierewicz and Bruno Prada, who won with all kind of wind conditions. Vice world champions are Augie Diaz with Henry Boening ahead of Eivind Melleby/Joshua Revkin. Our big gratitude goes to Yacht Club Costa Smeralda for hosting this file:///C:/Users/JerelynBiehl/Downloads/e-Starlights 2019.August (1).html 2/11 8/22/2019 *|MC:SUBJECT|* Championship perfectly so everybody enjoyed the racing and the social events in the beautiful club area! The record number of 90 Star-teams took part in the combined European Championship/SSL Breeze Grand Slam in Riva del Garda.

  • A Pictorial History of the Star Class
FOREWORD From its very beginning the Star Class has attracted photographers’ attention. Morris Rosenfeld and Edwin Levick were among the early photographers who took pictures of the Star. The beauty and power of the modern Star boat continues to be an object interest for both amateur and professional photographer. We are thus fortunate to have a fairly good pictorial record of the Star Class starting with those early days of 1911 when the Stars first put in an appearance on Long Island Sound and at Nahant Dory Club in Massachusetts. The Star Class also has a very good historical record of itself. An annual Log which lists the boats and their owners, gives race results, carries the Class Rules, and other pertinent information has been published since 1922. An additional source of information is available from Starlights, the Star Class newsletter which has been published since 1925. Added to these sources there are two history books about the Star Class: “Forty Years Among the Star”, written by George W. Elder, and “A History of the Star Class”, written by Class Historian and long-time Log and Starlights editor C. Stanley Ogilvy. It is the purpose of this pictorial history to bring together some of the more interesting photographs and events which have appeared in the Star Class publications. PRELUDE The Gaff Rigged Era 1911 – 1920 (and before) The history of the Star began even before 1911. In 1906 a boat called the Bug was designed in the office of William Gardner in New York. These boats about eighteen feet long, were miniature Stars, their design being very similar to the as yet unborn Star boat.
