The dissertation is approximately 9,975 words in length.’ Category One RENÉE JULIAN Supervised by Lyndon Fraser HIST480 2016 1 Abstract This dissertation examines the interconnections between migration, madness, and femininity through a case study of the women committed to Seaview Lunatic Asylum on New Zealand’s West Coast from 1872 to 1916. Psychiatric histories that include discussions of the effects that migrating to the goldfields can have on migrant’s mental health have been a recent development, although a number of these studies tend to focus on men. Moreover, while there have been studies of the connections between migration and insanity on nineteenth- century goldfields in Otago and Victoria, this has never been attempted for the West Coast. In order to bridge this gap, I examine women’s migration and mobility patterns during the West Coast rushes in addition to demographics within the asylum and the West Coast population to locate the Seaview women with the framework of broader cultural and societal trends. I then consider the ways which ‘social stressors’ and dominant attitudes towards femininity and ethnicity on the goldfields are reflected in women’s experiences of madness.

On my way home from the Dunedin Exhibition I called at Smith’s bookshop in Wellington. On the counter were the 2 volumes in one of McKay’s Native Affairs of the South Island. I paid him 4 pounds 10 for it and was so worried about something I forgot to take it away.

    1 4.5 COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES GREYMOUTH. THE GREY RIVER HOSPITAL COMMITTEE At various times, members of the Gilmer Brothers business were involved in community activities which involved significant time and effort and without any remuneration. The question is the motivation. Did they volunteer because they were successful and contributing to the community was expected of them? Alternatively, were voluntary community activities an element of business strategy which contributed to the success of the business and enhanced the reputations of the individuals involved? These roles brought business and government connections, allowed their skills and expertise to be demonstrated, and the detailed newspaper coverage of the activities helped to build reputations with the wider community. To illustrate we will review in detail the role of Hamilton Gilmer on the Grey River Hospital Committee. GREY RIVER HOSPITAL COMMITTEE The Grey River Hospital was established in 1866 and Dr C Li Morice was appointed as surgeon superintendent. GW Moss, a businessman was the Chairman of the Hospital Committee znd the Secreatary was J Payne who was also the County Clerk. It was located in Guinness St which was then known as Hospital St. Dr Morice was succeeded as Surgeon Superintendent by his son Dr Charles Morice in 1894. He died in 1904. In Greymouth’s early days the Westland County Government was very slow to provide all kinds of government services. Much was left to the drive to the community to establish these especially where it was felt these services were essential. The Grey River Hospital was seen as one of these institutions. Hamilton Gilmer displayed an early interest in the Committee that had oversight of the operations of the Grey River Hospital.

Although it contains a small population, Westland has a heritage of tenacity, innovation and progressiveness. The District’s economy continues to grow with the ongoing strength and growth of the agriculture sector, while tourism continues to expand, currently contributing $340m to the economy. Westland is home to some of New Zealand’s most spectacular weather and natural landscapes.

Rebecca Lenihan, January 2010 ii ABSTRACT While New Zealand has been described as more Scottish than any other country beyond Scotland, and Scots consistently made up nearly 20 per cent of the immigrant population of New Zealand to 1920, as a group New Zealand’s Scots migrants have remained relatively blurred. The distinctive national backgrounds of New Zealand’s British migrants have seldom been recognised in general histories or in specialist studies of migration to the country, migrants having tended to be categorised as ‘British’ and ‘Non-British’, leading to what Akenson aptly described as the ‘lumping of all white settlers into a spurious unity.’ This thesis, conceived as part of a larger research project investigating the experiences and contributions of Scots in New Zealand, seeks to establish key characteristics of the Scottish migrants arriving between 1840 and 1920. Five core questions are addressed: ‘from where in Scotland did they come?’, ‘who came?’, ‘when?’, ‘in what numbers?’, and ‘where did they settle?’. While previous studies have suggested partial answers to some of these questions, the present research offers a more full and detailed profile of New Zealand’s Scots migrants than has previously been available.

    Safe Community Accreditation Application for the Westland District Criteria 1: Leadership and Collaboration: Demonstration of leadership by coalition or group focused on improving community safety • Overview of Westland District and its Demographics Background: THE DISTRICT Westland is a long narrow region made up of a series of small communities which are serviced mainly by the town of Hokitika. The district stretches from the Taramakau River in the north to beyond Jackson Bay in the south. Its eastern boundary is the Southern Alps. Most of its 11,400 square kilometres is covered by widespread indigenous forest. The Westland District was formed in 1989, as a result of the amalgamation of Westland County and Hokitika Borough. 1 The district contains three wards: Northern Ward, Hokitika Ward and the Southern Ward. The Northern Ward extends from the Taramakau River to the Mikonui River and includes Otira, Kumara, Kaniere, Kokatahi, Kowhitirangi, and Ross. The Hokitika Ward covers the area formerly covered by the Hokitika Borough Council. The Southern Ward extends from the Mikonui River south and includes Hari Hari, Whataroa, Okarito, Franz Josef Glacier, Fox Glacier, Haast, Haast Beach, Okuru, Hannah’s Clearing, Neil’s Beach and Jackson’s Bay. Westland, apart from Hokitika, is made up of many small townships – mostly about 300 people. Most government departments on the Coast are down- sizing and/or centralizing in Greymouth and even some of those services, are now centralized in Christchurch. Geographical isolation, longer distances of travel for services and an aging population have heightened an awareness of a lack of advice and information being readily available in small Westland communities.
