UNIVERSITY OF CANTERBURY Women, Migration, and Madness A case study of Seaview Lunatic Asylum, 1872-1915 ‘This dissertation is submitted in part fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of BA Honours in History at the University of Canterbury. This dissertation is the result of my own work. Material from the published or unpublished work of other historians used in the dissertation is credited to the author in the footnote references. The dissertation is approximately 9,975 words in length.’ Category One RENÉE JULIAN Supervised by Lyndon Fraser HIST480 2016 1 Abstract This dissertation examines the interconnections between migration, madness, and femininity through a case study of the women committed to Seaview Lunatic Asylum on New Zealand’s West Coast from 1872 to 1916. Psychiatric histories that include discussions of the effects that migrating to the goldfields can have on migrant’s mental health have been a recent development, although a number of these studies tend to focus on men. Moreover, while there have been studies of the connections between migration and insanity on nineteenth- century goldfields in Otago and Victoria, this has never been attempted for the West Coast. In order to bridge this gap, I examine women’s migration and mobility patterns during the West Coast rushes in addition to demographics within the asylum and the West Coast population to locate the Seaview women with the framework of broader cultural and societal trends. I then consider the ways which ‘social stressors’ and dominant attitudes towards femininity and ethnicity on the goldfields are reflected in women’s experiences of madness.

  • Applications
applications New Zealand Graduate School of Education is now welcoming applications for the next intake of our two teacher training programmes: • Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) • Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary). The next intake begins on 1 February 2021, and applications close on 19 November 2020. Our highly practical programmes are taught by face-to-face delivery, at our Centre and in schools in greater Christchurch. history of nzgse THE ORIGINS During 1995, three teacher educators together decided there was a need for a high quality alternative to the traditional teacher education programmes. Lois Chick, Kevin Knight and John Langley formed a company to become this new enterprise - New Zealand Graduate School of Education. The vision was that NZGSE would be an exemplar for other training providers: an organisation that would challenge by example the current practices in teacher education. NZGSE was committed from the beginning to preparing teachers who would be academically well qualified, very skilled practitioners, and prepared to demonstrate the highest standards of professionalism in schools. THE MODEL To achieve this goal NZGSE chose a training model that was the most effective known. This was a combination of extensive school-based experience coupled with close supervision by teacher educators. Other features were to be a flexible programme length and a strong emphasis on the skills of behaviour management. THE DEVELOPMENT PHASE NZGSE’s set-up phase extended from October 1995 to September 1996 during which time the many approval processes were completed. By the end of the development phase NZGSE had acquired premises and equipment, was registered as a private training establishment, was accredited to work in the field of teacher education and had a Diploma of Teaching programme recognised by NZQA and the then Teacher Registration Board.

  • The Canterbury Association
The Canterbury Association (1848-1852): A Study of Its Members’ Connections By the Reverend Michael Blain Note: This is a revised edition prepared during 2019, of material included in the book published in 2000 by the archives committee of the Anglican diocese of Christchurch to mark the 150th anniversary of the Canterbury settlement. In 1850 the first Canterbury Association ships sailed into the new settlement of Lyttelton, New Zealand. From that fulcrum year I have examined the lives of the eighty-four members of the Canterbury Association. Backwards into their origins, and forwards in their subsequent careers. I looked for connections. The story of the Association’s plans and the settlement of colonial Canterbury has been told often enough. (For instance, see A History of Canterbury volume 1, pp135-233, edited James Hight and CR Straubel.) Names and titles of many of these men still feature in the Canterbury landscape as mountains, lakes, and rivers. But who were the people? What brought these eighty-four together between the initial meeting on 27 March 1848 and the close of their operations in September 1852? What were the connections between them? In November 1847 Edward Gibbon Wakefield had convinced an idealistic young Irishman John Robert Godley that in partnership they could put together the best of all emigration plans. Wakefield’s experience, and Godley’s contacts brought together an association to promote a special colony in New Zealand, an English society free of industrial slums and revolutionary spirit, an ideal English society sustained by an ideal church of England. Each member of these eighty-four members has his biographical entry.

10 Day Top of the South The Journey While not the only regions bathed in sunshine and wrapped in beautiful coastlines, Nelson and Marlborough join forces to deliver one of New Zealand’s most diverse and satisfying holiday destinations. Three national parks, beaches and bays, world-famous wineries, delectable produce, art, culture, adrenaline activities and family fun – all this and more can be found on this scenic loop from Britz’s Christchurch depot. Highlights of the trip Christchurch Kaikoura Marlborough Sounds Nelson Lakes National Park Day 1 Christchurch Christchurch is a welcoming city and a convenient departure point for the road trips that lead in almost every direction. Immerse yourself in its dynamic vibe by visiting the arty centre and Re:Start precinct, its parks, gardens and beaches, and suburban hotspots such as Addington and Woolston Tannery. There are several leafy holiday parks out east, including North South, handy to the Britz depot. Day 2 Christchurch to Kairkoura Head up SH1, and in less than 30 minutes you’ll reach Waipara, a burgeoning wine region where Pegasus Bay and Black Estate offer tastings and winery lunches; the Waipara Valley Wine Growers lists other cellar doors. SH1 then leaves the Canterbury Plains and winds over the Hundalee Hills before kissing the coast. Kaikoura lies at the southern boundary of Marlborough, straddling a peninsula guarded by the Seaward Kaikoura Range. It’s world- renown for Whale Watch tours, but there is plenty of other wildlife to see including dolphins, seals and seabirds. Other ways to encounter wildlife are Seal Swiming and Kayak Tours, and the walk along the view-filled Kaikoura Peninsula that passes the Point Kean Seal Colony.
