Award Ceremony and Exhibition Launch of “CHALLENGE FOR THE URBAN & BUILT ENVIRONMENT [CUBE] 2010” Synopsis: Organised by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), CUBE is an Urban Planning and Design workshop and competition for Pre-University (Pre-U) students. Building on the success of “Challenge of the Urban and Built Environment” in 2009, URA organised a second instalment of the workshop with the aim to create greater awareness on the importance of a well-designed built environment, as well as to share and cultivate an appreciation of Singapore’s unique planning dilemmas, among another group of pre-university students (JC-1 and Polytechnic level), The three-and-a-half-day workshop and competition is part of AUDE’s ongoing public education efforts to build up students’ awareness of the urban and built environment. Held in the URA Centre from 1 to 4 June 2010, CUBE 2010 seeks to educate the students on the basic principles of urban planning, architecture and urban design. Through the workshop, students are encouraged to develop a keen sense of observation and interest in their environment. The workshop was well-attended by over 120 students from 11 junior colleges and 5 polytechnics. FURTHER EDUCATION IN SINGAPORE In 2000 the Compulsory Education Act codified compulsory education for children of primary school age, and made it a criminal offence for parents to fail to enroll their children in school and ensure their regular attendance. Compulsory Education (CE) was implemented in Singapore in 2003 for children born between 2 January 1996 and 1 January 1997 who are residing in Singapore. The Ministry of Education (Singapore) (http://www.moe.gov.sg/) formulates and implements the policies related to education in Singapore and has developed a world- leading education system comprising the following levels: Pre-School; Primary; Secondary; Pre-University; and Post-Secondary. In the recent Global Competitiveness Report Singapore was ranked first in the world for the quality of its educational system (http://www3.weforum.org/docs/WEF_GlobalCompetitivenessReport_2010-11.pdf). 1. Pre-University Education Upon completion of secondary school education, students will participate in the annual Singaporean GCE 'O' Level, the results of which determine which pre- universities or post-secondary institutions they may apply for. Pre-university centres include junior colleges for a two-year course leading up to GCE 'A' Level, or the Millennia Institute for a three-year course leading up to GCE 'A' Level. Both junior colleges and the Millennia Institute accept students on merit, with a greater emphasis on academics than professional technical education. Students who wish to pursue a professional-centred diploma education go on instead to post-secondary institutions such as the polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education (ITE). 1.1 Pre-University centres The pre-university centres of Singapore are designed for upper-stream students (roughly about 20%-25% of those going into further education) who wish to pursue a university degree after two to three years of pre-university education, rather than stopping after polytechnic post-secondary education.

TEMASEK JUNIOR COLLEGE JC1 SUBJECT COMBINATIONS (2021) GCE A-LEVEL CURRICULUM Temasek Junior College prepares students for the A-Level examinations at the end of the 2-year course. Please refer to MOE’s website for information on the GCE A-level curriculum: The norm for most JC students is to offer three H2 content-based subjects + one H1 content- based subject + GP + MTL + PW. One of the four content-based subjects must be from a contrasting discipline; the contrasting subject can be a H1 or a H2 subject. Project Work (PW) and General Paper (GP) are compulsory H1 subjects. Students are not required to sit the H1 MTL Examination if they: Are exempted from MTL; Attained D7 or better in GCE O-Level Higher MTL; Offer H2 Mother Tongue Languages & Literature (MTLL) at JC2; Offer H1 Non-Tamil Indian Languages (Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi,Punjabi and Urdu) or H1 Foreign Languages (French, German and Japanese) in lieu of MTL (subjected to MOE approval). The number of units assigned to H1, H2, H3 subjects are as follows: LEVEL NO OF UNITS H1 1 H2 2 H3 1 The total number of units for a chosen subject combination can range from a minimum of 10 units to a maximum of 12 units, including MTL. MTL still contributes one unit towards the total number of units for a chosen subject combination even if a student does not offer H1 MTL. All subject combinations must include one contrasting subject, taken at either H1 or H2 level. 1 THE EXPANDED CURRICULUM (FOUR H2 CONTENT-BASED SUBJECTS) The expanded curriculum is made up of four H2 content-based subjects + GP + MTL + PW.

PRESS RELEASE Ministry of Education EDUN N25-05-20 9 Sep 05 EMBARGOED UNTIL 12.00 PM, FRIDAY 9 Sep 2005 RIVER VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL TO OFFER THE INTEGRATED PROGRAMME IN 2006 1. Come Jan 2006, students will have an additional choice of Integrated Programme (IP) in secondary schools. River Valley High School (RVHS) will offer the IP in 2006, joining eight other schools/family of schools currently offering the IP. This was announced by Education Minister, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, during his visit to River Valley High School (RVHS) on 9 Sep 05. 2. The Ministry of Education (MOE) has approved the proposal by RVHS to offer a 6-year IP for its students. The IP will be available to its 2006 cohort of Sec 1 and 2 students from January. RVHS students will take the GCE ‘A’ Level examinations at the end of JC 2. The IP offered by RVHS will add further diversity to the current mix of schools offering the IP. 3. RVHS intends to provide an IP that focuses on both process and content, with the aim of nurturing critical thinking skills and providing opportunities for its students to engage in broader learning experiences. Its IP will also provide a range of programmes to develop talents in niche areas such as the arts and mathematics. 4. RVHS will be relocated to Jalan Boon Lay in a few years’ time, in new premises to be developed. The new premises are necessary to provide for the projected expansion in enrolment and full range of facilities it will need as a 6th form school.

The Ministry of Education presents the Trim and Fit (TAF) Awards annually to schools in recognition of their efforts in improving physical fitness and reducing obesity levels in their schools. This year, TAF Awards are awarded to 306 schools in recognition of their efforts and achievements in the TAF Programme for 2005. 163 schools will receive the Gold Awards while 143 will receive the Silver Awards (see Annex 1). Compared to 2004, 11 more schools are receiving the Gold Awards, as shown in Annex 2. 2. Each year, schools are banded according to their fitness index, results in the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test and percentage of overweight students. The TAF banding criteria are given in Annex 3. Schools in Band A will receive the Gold Award while schools in Band B will receive the Silver Award. MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award 3. The Ministry of Defence will be presenting the MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award (MPFPA) to 12 Junior Colleges (JCs) and 1 Centralised Institute (CI) this year. The award is given out to JCs and CI whose final-year students have achieved the qualifying Gold/Silver pass rate in the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA). The aim is to recognise their efforts in promoting physical fitness. 4. MPFPA recipients will each receive a monetary award based on the number of final-year students who achieve a Gold/Silver standard for NAPFA.
