Interpolarea caracterelor ecologice se poate face până la nivel de familie (Gaudan, 1979), astfel prezenĠa gadidelor úi a scophthalmidelor ne demonstrază că, la nivelul formaĠiunii marnelor bituminoase, avem de-a face cu adâncimi mici, posibil 100-300 m úi o salinitate normală. september 2007 21 – 23 - 1 - Romanian Symposium on Paleontology – Iaúi, VI-th edition THE FORAMINIFERA ASSOCIATED TO THE HIDA FORMATION DEPOSITIONAL ENVIRONMENT Claudia BEDELEAN1, Sorin FILIPESCU1 1 Babeú-Bolyai” University, Department of Geology, Kogalniceanu 1 Str., 400084, Cluj-Napoca The Hida Formation, situated in north-western part of the Transylvanian Basin preserves in its lower part at least two distinct types of foraminifera assemblages: an assemblage of Eggenburgian type with taxa similar to Chechiú Formation (leading by Lagenida, calcareous benthic and planktonic calcareous foraminifera) and a deep-marine assemblage, typical for turbiditic environments (dominated by benthic agglutinated and planktonic taxa), which was identified in the deeper environments south of the Pienides. Towards the upper part of Hida Formation, the abundance and diversity of microfauna gradually decreases due to the change of environmental parametres. The correlation between the types of lithofacies and main micropaleontlogical assemblages allow a better paleoenvironmental zonation (deep-marine to deltaic environments). We compiled detailed information on 252 occurrences of belemnites in six National Park Service (NPS) areas in Alaska. This information was based on published literature and maps, unpublished U.S. Geological Survey internal fossil reports (“Examination and Report on Referred Fossils” or E&Rs), the U.S. Geological Survey Mesozoic locality register, the Alaska Paleontological Database, the NPS Paleontology Archives and our own records of belemnites found in museum collections. Few specimens have been identified and many consist of fragments. However, even these suboptimal specimens provide evidence that belemnites are present in given formations and provide direction for future research. Two especially interesting avenues for research concern the time range of belemnites in Alaska. Belemnites are known to have originated in what is now Europe in the Early Jurassic Hettangian and to have a well-documented world-wide distribution in the Early Jurassic Toarcian.

  • Cephalopod Reproductive Strategies Derived from Embryonic Shell Size
Biol. Rev. Egg size is also approximately equal to mantle length of hatchlings in 45 cephalopod species with rudimentary shells. Paired data on the size of the initial chamber versus embryonic shell in 235 species of Ammonoidea, 46 Bactritida, 13 Nautilida, 22 Orthocerida, 8 Tarphycerida, 4 Oncocerida, 1 Belemnoidea, 4 Sepiida and 1 Spirulida demonstrated that, although there is a positive relationship between these parameters in some taxa, initial chamber size cannot be used to predict egg size in extinct cephalopods; the size of the embryonic shell may be more appropriate for this task. The evolution of reproductive strategies in cephalopods in the geological past was marked by an increasing significance of small-egged taxa, as is also seen in simultaneously evolving fish taxa. Key words: embryonic shell, initial chamber, hatchling, egg size, Cephalopoda, Ammonoidea, reproductive strategy, Nautilida, Coleoidea.

Embryonic shell structure of Early–Middle Jurassic belemnites, and its significance for belemnite expansion and diversification in the Jurassic LARISA A. DOGUZHAEVA, ROBERT WEIS, DOMINIQUE DELSATE AND NINO MARIOTTI Doguzhaeva, L.A., Weis, R., Delsate, D. & Mariotti N. 2014: Embryonic shell structure of Early–Middle Jurassic belemnites, and its significance for belemnite expansion and diversification in the Jurassic. Lethaia, Vol. 47, pp. 49–65. Early Jurassic belemnites are of particular interest to the study of the evolution of skel- etal morphology in Lower Carboniferous to the uppermost Cretaceous belemnoids, because they signal the beginning of a global Jurassic–Cretaceous expansion and diver- sification of belemnitids. We investigated potentially relevant, to this evolutionary pat- tern, shell features of Sinemurian–Bajocian Nannobelus, Parapassaloteuthis, Holcobelus and Pachybelemnopsis from the Paris Basin. Our analysis of morphological, ultrastruc- tural and chemical traits of the earliest ontogenetic stages of the shell suggests that modified embryonic shell structure of Early–Middle Jurassic belemnites was a factor in their expansion and colonization of the pelagic zone and resulted in remarkable diversification of belemnites. Innovative traits of the embryonic shell of Sinemurian– Bajocian belemnites include: (1) an inorganic–organic primordial rostrum encapsulating the protoconch and the phragmocone, its non-biomineralized compo- nent, possibly chitin, is herein detected for the first time; (2) an organic rich closing membrane which was under formation. It was yet perforated and possessed a foramen; and (3) an organic rich pro-ostracum earlier documented in an embryonic shell of Pliensbachian Passaloteuthis. The inorganic–organic primordial rostrum tightly coat- ing the protoconch and phragmocone supposedly enhanced protection, without increase in shell weight, of the Early Jurassic belemnites against explosion in deep- water environment.

  • The Marine Jurassic of Argentina: a Biostratigraphic Framework
326 by Alberto C. Riccardi The marine Jurassic of Argentina: a biostratigraphic framework Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo, Universidad Nacional de La Plata, Paseo del Bosque s/n, 1900 La Plata, Argentina. Email: [email protected] In Argentina the best and most complete marine Juras- sic succession is exposed between 32° and 39° S, along a N-S belt roughly coincident with the border with Chile. Here all stages, except the Kimmeridgian, are represented by marine facies. Ammonites have provided a biostratigraphic framework to date and correlate lithostratigraphic units and sequences, to reconstruct the history of the marine fill, and allow the development of other palaeontological and geological studies. Recent studies on the systematics and/or biostratigra- phy of Andean ammonites have provided the basis for the presentation of a summary of the 45 ammonite zones of the Jurassic of west-central Argentina and to stress its significance in reconstructing the palaeogeographic evolution of that region. Introduction Jurassic rocks in Argentina are present over extensive areas (see Fig- ure 1) and include a large variety of marine and continental facies (see Riccardi et al., 1992). South of 39°S marine Jurassic consists of Pliensbachian-Lower Toarcian and uppermost Jurassic strata, repre- sented respectively in central and southern Patagonia. North of 39°S marine Jurassic is exposed along a N-S belt roughly coincident with the boundary between Argentina and Chile, up to 31°S where it becomes restricted to Chile. The marine Jurassic generally rests unconformably on Upper Triassic (west-central Argentina) and Upper Jurassic vulcanites (southern Patagonia) or on Upper Paleozoic (west-central Patago- nia).

Age of ammonite fauna 3^5 Acknowledgements 3^5 References 365 Abstract In the article the author presents a revision of ammonites from the locality Hierlatz. The revised material mostly comes from the preserved collections of HAUER (1853, 1854 and partly 1856) and GEYER (1886) at the GBA. Besides that we also studied own material. The assembla ge of ammonites is relatively rich in species as testified by arround 40 described species, from which there is one new species. With regard to the fact that at locality Hierlatz the fauna occurs in neptunic dykes, horizoned collections cannot be gathered out here. On the bases of as semblages of ammonites presented here we distinguished five ammonite horizons, which represent the Sinemurian , Lotharingian and Lower Carixian too.
