Orientador da Tese DOUTOR JOAQUIM ANTERO MAGALHÃES FERREIRA Faculdade de Ciências Humanas e Sociais Universidade Fernando Pessoa RESUMO O teclado de computador constitui um elemento chave da interface humano-computador e ocupa um lugar de destaque no paradigma da computação, enquanto principal dispositivo de entrada. A partir de um estudo exploratório e arqueológico, esta investigação apresenta uma visão panorâmica sobre o design do teclado, desde a invenção da máquina de escrever (1868) até à actualidade (2008). Baseado nos mais diversos dados tecnológicos, estéticos e funcionais, este trabalho aborda ainda o aparecimento das máquinas de introdução e processamento de informação, e integra a análise dos dispositivos e novos paradigmas de interacção. O objectivo principal desta investigação é esboçar o estado de conhecimento neste domínio, perscrutando os progressos, as transformações e as alterações do design do teclado ao longo do tempo, contribuindo desta forma para futuras propostas na interacção humano-computador. I ABSTRACT The computer keyboard is a key element in human-computer interface and occupies a cen- trepiece place in the computational paradigm as the main input device. From an exploratory and archaeological study, this research presents a general overview of the keyboard design, since the invention of the typewriter (1868) till today (2008). Based on the most diverse technological, aesthetical and functional data, this study also addresses the appearance of machines for the introduction and processing of information, and integrates the analysis of devices and new interaction paradigms. The main goal of this research is to outline the status of knowledge in this field, to scrutinise progresses, transformations and changes to keyboard design throughout the years, thus con- tributing for future proposals in human-computer interaction. II RESUMÉ Le clavier d’ordinateur est un élément clé de l’interface homme-ordinateur et occupe une place de tout premier plan dans le paradigme de la computation en tant que principal dispo- sitif d’entrée. Partant d’une étude exploratoire et archéologique, cette recherche présente une vision pano- ramique sur le design des claviers, depuis l’invention de la machine à écrire (1868), jusqu’à l’actualité (2008). Les plus diverses données technologiques, esthétiques et fonctionnelles ont servi de base à ce travail. Celui-ci traite encore l’apparition des machines d’introduction et traitement d’information et intègre l’analyse des dispositifs et de nouveaux paradigmes d’interaction. L’objectif principal de cette recherche est de faire une esquisse de l’état des connaissances dans ce domaine, tout en observant les progrès, les transformations et les changements du design des claviers au cours du temps, en contribuant ainsi à de futures propositions, liées à l’interaction homme-ordinateur. In Finland, Sweden and Austria the speech-to-text transfer is performed in real-time by interpreters using a (specially adapted or standard) keyboard that is connected to a screen. As a result of different legislative frameworks governing services for the disabled, STT interpreting has developed differently in different countries and so far there has been little international cooperation. STT interpreting has also been largely ignored by Translation and Interpreting Studies. This paper examines the situation in Finland and Sweden, where STT interpreting training programmes have been available since the 1980s, and Austria, where the first training programme started in 2010, and investigates the norms, values and expectations that guide STT interpreters’ practice in the three countries.

To enter a word, the user connects the zones containing the target letters by drawing gestures on the screen, like gesture typing on a virtual QWERTY. A statistical decoder interprets the input and enters the most probable word. A suggestion bar appears to display other possible words. The user could stroke right or left on the suggestion bar to see additional suggestions. Tapping on a suggestion replaces the last entered word. One-letter and out-of-vocabulary words are entered by repeated strokes from/to the zones containing the target letters, in which case the keyboard first enters the two one-letter words in the English language (see the second last image from the left), then the other letters in the sequence in which they appear in the zones (like multi-tap). Users could also repeatedly tap (instead of stroke) on the zones to enter the letters. The keyboard highlights the zones when the finger enters them and traces all finger movements.
