    Coping Strategies and Household Food Security in Drought-Prone Areas in Ethiopia: The Case of Lay Gayint District Arega Bazezew Berlie Department of Geography and Environmental Studies Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia Email: [email protected] DOI//http://dx.doi.org/10.4314/gjdsv12i1&2.1 Abstract A range of factors from physical environmental circumstances to policy and institutions-related issues affect households’ involvement in long-term strategies for positive livelihood outcomes. The general objective of this study was to examine households’ response to undesirable situations for food security outcomes. Questionnaire, in-depth interview and focus group discussions were the major data collection techniques. A major finding is that despite the low level of productivity related to local environmental constraints, adaptation strategies were not in a position to improve the livelihoods of the poor in the study area. The study found out that, planting trees for the market, livestock diversification and natural resource conservation were vital adaptive strategies employed by the better-off households. Short-term responses to meet the shortfall of consumption needs, such as selling charcoal and fuel wood, taking loans/credits and borrowing in kind or cash from friends were the major ex-post coping strategies practised by the poor and vulnerable households. In drought-prone areas such as Lay Gayint district, a serious problem for agricultural production is scarcity and irregularity of rainfall. Thus, there is the need to adapt early maturing and drought-resistant varieties, efficient use of available water and the growing of highland apple trees and planting Eucalyptus trees in accessible areas for better livelihoods.

Spatial analyses which can be used to organize, inform and extend the on-going market surveys and market inventories in the South Wollo are illustrated in Part II, and the final section provides suggestions for future data collection efforts. Data for this report were collected by Dr. Michael Shin during his visit to Ethiopia between 27 July 1999 and 7 August 1999, which was shortened by approximately one week due to inclement weather and sporadic travel times. Presentation graphics within this report were created with the ArcView (version 3.1) GIS distributed by Environmental Systems Research, Incorporated, and MacroMedia FreeHand (version 8.0.1) graphic design software.     FEWS NET/WFP Joint Trip Report Activity Name: WFP- FEWS NET Joint mid-Belg season assessment Reported by: Zerihun Mekuria (FEWS NET) and Alemu Berhe (WFP) Dates of travel: 22 to 30 April, 2015 Area Visited: North Wollo, South Wollo and North Shewa zones of Amhara Region Reporting date: 02 May, 2015 Highlights of the findings: The onset of the February to May Belg 2015 has been delayed by more than six weeks in North and South Wollo zones and the rain started towards the end of March (20 – 25 March) except for the North Shewa zone where the current Belg started around mid-January and resumed in mid-March for about three to four days. The amount of the rainfall is ranges from low to heavy but distribution is uneven. In all Belg benefiting areas of northeastern Amhara, it has been unusually warmer and drier since mid-March. Except for the timely planting in mid-January in some areas in North Shewa zone, Belg planting as well delayed by about six to eight weeks in most highlands of northeastern Amhara. Delay on the onset of Belg rains and prolonged drier periods in the season has resulted in a much below average planting coverage where the current planting is about 42%, 51% and 26% of the normal area is planted in North Wollo, South Wollo and North Shewa zones respectively. Except for few crops planted in January in North Shewa zone which are currently at fruit setting stage, most of the crops planted are at early vegetative stage and some seeds remained aborted.
