NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 41, No. 1, January 30, 2002) Barry on Baseball NCBWA President’s Message by Barry Allen The wait is finally over. The 2002 college baseball season has officially begun. While most of the schools do not open play until Feb. 1, 2002, there are some that have already opened their seasons entering the final week of January. The 2002 college baseball season promises to be one of the most exciting seasons in memory. Can Miami make it three in a row at Rosenblatt Stadium? The defending champs return a number of key players and will play one of the nation's most demanding schedules. How will baseball at Alex Box Stadium differ now that legendary Skip Bertman is no longer in the first base dugout? New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. There will be a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this year as the annual CoSIDA convention will be held in Rochester, N.Y.

10 DIVISION I Baseball DIVISION I 2001 Championship Highlights Hurricanes Have Their Way: Miami (Florida) was perfect for the postseason and nearly flaw- less at the finish. The Hurricanes completed a nine-game swath through the Division I Baseball Championship by blowing past Stanford, 12-1, June 16 at the Men's College World Series. The title was Miami's fourth overall and the second under Jim Morris. Tom Farmer notched the victory by scattering a run on four hits over the first 5 2/3 innings, while fellow senior Kevin Brown homered, doubled and drove in five runs. Brown’s home run in the fifth inning was his third of the series and fifth in eight career CWS games. President George W. Bush made his CWS debut at the tournament's June 8 opener between Stanford and Tulane, throwing out the first ball and visiting with all eight teams. Miami, 53-12, reached Stanford pitching for four runs in the third inning and five in the fifth before the Cardinal finally dented the plate. The 12-1 score equaled the largest margin of victory in the championship game's 55-year history, and matched the score from Minnesota's 1956 triumph over Arizona. Miami’s Charlton Jimerson earned most outstanding player honors by batting .333, swiping seven bases and sparkling defensively in center field. Minor League Transactions: Sept. 26-Oct. 2 • The first wave of free agents entered the marketplace on Oct. 1 as 43 players elected free agency, the majority of them under Article XX(D) of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. It reads in part: “Any player who has at least three years of major league service, or who qualified as a “Super Two” player . and whose contract is assigned outright to a minor league club may elect, in lieu of accepting such assignment, to become a free agent. In the event that such a player with at least three years of major league service does not elect free agency in lieu of accepting such assignment, he may elect free agency between the end of the then current major league season and the next following Oct. 15, unless such player is returned to a major league roster prior to making such election.” • The recalls in this installment are paperwork moves owing to the fact that, with the minor league season and playoffs concluded, players can no longer be sent on optional assignments. According to MLR 11(b)4 “A Major League Club may recall a player not to report after the conclusion of the championship season of the Minor League Club to which the player is on optional assignment but no later than October 1” Arizona Diamondbacks Signed: RHP Seth Lintz (Laredo (American Association)), RHP Dustin Loggins (Kansas City (American Association)), RHP Jacob Roberts (Bridgeport (Atlantic)), LHP Sean Mahley (Schaumburg (Frontier)), OF Dan Bowman (Lake Erie (Frontier)), OF Steve McQuail (Schaumburg (Frontier)) Elected free agency:
