Since leaving pro ball, Jason has given private lessons and served as an instructor, initially for the Washington Nationals. Most recently, Jason joined the Arizona Diamondbacks organization as a hitting coach. Chris Capper: Originally from South Africa, Chris moved to the US at an early age. He played baseball locally, attending Deer Valley High School. A bright pitching prospect, Chris graduated and went on to play baseball in college at Brigham Young University in Salt Lake City, Utah. Chris was a successful starting pitcher at BYU for 3 seasons until he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks last year. Selected in the 26th round of the 2012 draft, Chris is off to a solid start and is currently playing ball within the D-Backs organization Chas Davis: Chas graduated from San Francisco State University with a degree in Marketing Communications. An avid player, Chas grew up in a baseball family and played throughout high school and college. He also played in the MLBAAP Australia as a utility player and has coached. An excellent hitter, Chas regularly works with those interested in sharpening their hitting skills. He is currently working on his CSCS certification. Rodney Davis: Rodney was a minor league player in the Dodgers organization from 1983-1985. After spending time as the head coach at Paramount High School in California and a coach at several junior colleges and San Francisco State University, Rodney has served as a MLB scout for several organizations, including the AZ Diamondbacks. In 2002, Ben was awarded Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, a second team college All-American and Western Athletic Conference All-Star. He was drafted as a pitcher by the Oakland Athletics in the 2002 Major League Baseball Draft - taken in the 1st round, (30th overall). Ben went on to play 9 years of professional baseball. Currently, Ben is a part of the management team at It’s All In The Game with oversight of the company’s direction. He also coaches individual athletes to harness their natural athletic abilities and mentalities Josh Giles: A solid, right handed pitcher, Joshua has played baseball his entire life. Born in Albuquerque, New Mexico, he played high school at powerhouse El Dorado High School where he was both an infielder and outfielder. Due to his strong arm and throwing abilities, he converted positions and has been a pitcher ever since. Joshua started as a freshman and became New Mexico Junior College's leading pitcher the following year when he passed the 90mph mark and the team won the 2005 Junior College World Series. That same year, Joshua signed with the Texas Rangers as a free agent and played in the Rangers organization for four years. He played two hears in Low A for the Clinton Lumberkings followed by two years in High A for the Bakersfield Blaze. Since 2009, Joshua has continued to play baseball for a variety of independent league teams, most recently with the Copperstate Prospectors in the Arizona Freedom League. Giles is known for his strong work ethic and being a well-rounded player - who once hit four home runs in a doubleheader. Robby Hammock: Robby Hammock has been blessed with a three time charm, having been drafted three times. Born in Macon, Georgia, Robby was drafted for the first time by the Florida Marlins directly from high school in 1995. The second time, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays pulled his ticket after his sophomore year of Junior College. The third time, the Arizona Diamondbacks drafted Robby in the 23rd round after his junior year at the University of Georgia. Ultimately, Robby’s career spanned 1998 through 2011 and 14 professional seasons during which he also played a season with both Baltimore and the New York Yankees. During his 6 seasons in the Big Leagues with the Diamondbacks, Robby caught Randy Johnson’s perfect game in 2004 and managed to impress with his versatility, positive attitude and diligent work ethic. Robby continues to build upon his 12 years as a Diamondback by working for them as a hitting coach. During the off season, he makes his home at It’s All In The Game as the Hitting & Catching Coordinator. Jon Huizinga: Jonathan "Zinger" Huizinga has been pitching in the minor leagues and independent leagues since he graduated from Michigan State University in 2002. "Zinger" overcame what was called a career ending arm injury in 2004. He has been featured in a documentary film, "The Raw Natural", which focuses on athletes who fuel themselves with organic, raw, and natural foods. He has a special interest in maximizing the human potential with a holistic approach. Coach Zinger is available for classes and private 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, or team instruction. Jamie Mathias: With a degree in Exercise Physiology from Ohio State and a love for sports, Jamie has earned the right to direct the fitness programs at It’s All In The Game. Ultimately, he became a Golden Gloves champion in Arizona, California and Ohio, before turning pro in 1997. A licensed USA professional boxer, Jamie achieved the status of USBA super welterweight champion, a title he held from 1999 through 2003. With additional studies in physical therapy at the University of Montana and NFPT certification as a professional trainer, Jamie now combines his own experience as an athlete with his academic knowledge to successfully craft fitness programs for all ages and those in and outside of the ball playing arena. With longtime ties to Arizona, Jamie is a graduate of Deer Valley High School. He recently returned to Arizona in order to be closer to his parents. Jorge Mejia: Originally from the Dominican Republic, Jorge has been in professional baseball for 13 years. He was first acquired by the Oakland A’s as a free agent in 1999.  He was later acquired in the Rule 5 Draft by the Cincinnati Reds in 2003.  Jorge continues to hold two all-time records for the Arizona League with 84 hits and 134 total bases. He was an All Star with the Arizona League in 2003 and Golden League in 2009. Jorge began his coaching career with the San Diego Padres in 2011 and is currently coaching with the Washington Nationals. He spends the off season working with kids of all ages with passion and deep understanding of the game, allows him to take players skills to the next level. Danny Orr: Danny Orr is our Pitching Coordinator and was drafted by the Oakland A's and pitched in their organization until a shoulder injury took him out of the game. Orr's injury led him to seek answers from world renowned pitching guru, Dr. Tom House, and he has been learning from him ever since. Danny is a certified pitching instructor by Dr. House and the Rod Dedeaux Research and Baseball Institute at USC and specializes in a science-based approach to velocity development. Orr also spent time with the Chicago White Sox as an associate scout in addition to inventing a patent-pending mental training method for athletes that has undergone two successful scientific research studies conducted at Arizona State University. His method was shown to balance both hemispheres of the brain and improved performance by an astounding 61% in just six weeks. Danny is currently enhancing this neural reconditioning method by collaborating with a Harvard professor on a program for pitchers. Terry Pollreisz: Terry has spent his entire career in baseball since being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 1969. He began coaching after his minor league career ended, and he managed his high school team to two Oregon state championships.

NATIONAL COLLEGIATE BASEBALL WRITERS NEWSLETTER (Volume 41, No. 1, January 30, 2002) Barry on Baseball NCBWA President’s Message by Barry Allen The wait is finally over. The 2002 college baseball season has officially begun. While most of the schools do not open play until Feb. 1, 2002, there are some that have already opened their seasons entering the final week of January. The 2002 college baseball season promises to be one of the most exciting seasons in memory. Can Miami make it three in a row at Rosenblatt Stadium? The defending champs return a number of key players and will play one of the nation's most demanding schedules. How will baseball at Alex Box Stadium differ now that legendary Skip Bertman is no longer in the first base dugout? New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. There will be a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this year as the annual CoSIDA convention will be held in Rochester, N.Y.

  • BULLPEN CHATTER Ups in MLB When He Pitched out of the Bullpen in Baltimore
BULLPEN CHATTER ups in MLB when he pitched out of the bullpen in Baltimore. “I tell our young prospects to throw the change‐up even harder than the fastball. We long‐toss change‐ups, too, just to build the habit of throwing it harder than the fastball.” He waited for me to look puzzled, then continued with his explanation. “You know what happens with young pitchers when they try to throw too hard? Their fastball loses velocity. Why does it lose velocity? Because they clench up and pitch with a stiff wrist. So I tell them to throw the change‐up with that kind of macho. They learn to put more into it, and the pitch travels slower. They also learn the difference between throwing with a relaxed wrist and a stiff one.” Pete was a southpaw, and he talked about There are truths about pitching that sound how southpaws tend to develop into smarter contradictory. Here are a few… pitchers because, typically, they don’t throw as hard as righties. He mentioned Whitey Ford and • You add power to your pitching motion Warren Spahn – two Hall of Famers that Pete by slowing it down rather than got to know in his playing days – and he speeding it up mentioned Tom Glavine, Francisco Liriano and • You pitch as much with your legs as Jamie Moyer, too, the ageless Phillies’ lefty. with your arm “Moyer’s fastball clocks in the low 80’s and • Throwing hard requires a firm grip and I’ve seen him throw a change‐up as slow as 68 a relaxed wrist mph.” Richert chuckles and shakes his head.

Not only was Dedeaux the main architect for the success of the USC baseball program, but also one of the great ambassadors for college baseball and amateur baseball in international competition. In his 45-year tenure at USC (1942-86), Dedeaux led the Trojans to 11 national championships and 28 conference titles. He posted an overall record of 1,332-571-11 for a superb .699 winning percentage. At his retirement, he had won more games than any other college baseball coach (he currently ranks seventh among Division I coaches). His teams from 1970-74 won fi ve straight NCAA championships, a record that may never be broken. No other school has won more than two in a row. Two personal honors for Dedeaux, which are quite fi tting considering his accomplishments, came in 1999 when he was named “Coach of the Century” by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. As part of the 50th anniversary of the College World Series in 1996, Dedeaux was named the head coach of the All-Time CWS team by a panel of former World Series coaches, media and college baseball offi cials. In 1999, he was presented with keys to the city of Omaha (home to the College World Series). Dedeaux was named Coach of the Year six times by the American Baseball Coaches Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame in 1970.
