BULLPEN CHATTER ups in MLB when he pitched out of the bullpen in Baltimore. “I tell our young prospects to throw the change‐up even harder than the fastball. We long‐toss change‐ups, too, just to build the habit of throwing it harder than the fastball.” He waited for me to look puzzled, then continued with his explanation. “You know what happens with young pitchers when they try to throw too hard? Their fastball loses velocity. Why does it lose velocity? Because they clench up and pitch with a stiff wrist. So I tell them to throw the change‐up with that kind of macho. They learn to put more into it, and the pitch travels slower. They also learn the difference between throwing with a relaxed wrist and a stiff one.” Pete was a southpaw, and he talked about There are truths about pitching that sound how southpaws tend to develop into smarter contradictory. Not only was Dedeaux the main architect for the success of the USC baseball program, but also one of the great ambassadors for college baseball and amateur baseball in international competition. In his 45-year tenure at USC (1942-86), Dedeaux led the Trojans to 11 national championships and 28 conference titles. He posted an overall record of 1,332-571-11 for a superb .699 winning percentage. At his retirement, he had won more games than any other college baseball coach (he currently ranks seventh among Division I coaches). His teams from 1970-74 won fi ve straight NCAA championships, a record that may never be broken. No other school has won more than two in a row. Two personal honors for Dedeaux, which are quite fi tting considering his accomplishments, came in 1999 when he was named “Coach of the Century” by both Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. As part of the 50th anniversary of the College World Series in 1996, Dedeaux was named the head coach of the All-Time CWS team by a panel of former World Series coaches, media and college baseball offi cials. In 1999, he was presented with keys to the city of Omaha (home to the College World Series). Dedeaux was named Coach of the Year six times by the American Baseball Coaches Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame in 1970.

  • Midnight Sun in Alaska
This is how I celebrated my 50th birthday. On vacation. Seeing baseball. In Alaska. June 23, 2005---- FAIRBANKS, Alaska -- Every young baseball player has a golden vision. Every old ballplayer has a dusty memory. The spirits met along the horizon Tuesday in the 100th Anniversary Midnight Sun baseball game at Growden Park. For one day, the sun never sets on a dream. The game between the Alaska Goldpanners of Fairbanks and the Omaha (Neb.) Strike Zone began at 10:30 p.m. The sky looked like midday in Chicago. The game finished around 1 a.m. The Midnight Sun game never has been played under artificial lights. Fairbanks is 160 miles from the Arctic Circle. On the June 21 summer solstice, sunset technically was at 12:47 a.m. The sun crept along the horizon, creating a snow-globe blue sky until sunrise at 2:59 a.m. Frank Sinatra would have loved this town that never sleeps. The sun hovered over left field and the Chena Ridge hills in the north. The 4,000- seat park was illuminated with local color, including the Frigid Aires 1940s swing- music trio playing Sunny Side of the Street." The accordion-string, bass and trumpet group is led by 85-year-old hornplayer Bill Stroecker. The combined age is 200. Stroecker is president of the Goldpanners, and his father, Ed, was the catcher in the first Midnight Sun game. The game was stopped at midnight for the singing of the Alaska Flag Song." Mary Ann Warden sang the song in Inupiat, an Eskimo language spoken in the North Slope of Alaska, above the Arctic Circle.

Abstract Frozen Moments in the Interior Stadium: Style in Contemporary "Proseball" Crosby Hunt Writing about baseball has never been so popular as it is presently, causing one scholar to refer to "the current boom" in publishing. Most of the analysis of this body of work has centered on novels, but it is apparent that other forms of baseball writing are rhetorically as interesting as fiction. After summarizing some of the major critical works on baseball fiction, this study seeks to rectify certain omissions in the field of what Donald Hall calls "proseball." Included in this dissertation are studies of three player- autobiographies: Ted Williams * Mv Turn at Bat. Jim Brosnan’s The Long Season, and Jim Bouton*s Ball Four, in chapter two. Also covered, in chapter three, are essays by Roger Angell, John Updike, and Jonathan Schwartz, focusing on what Schwartz calls "frozen moments" in what Angell calls "the interior stadium." Chapter four provides an analysis of Don DeLillo's recent postmodern novella, Pafko at the Wall.
