Baseball’s Words of Wisdom

Baseball is a game where a curve is an optical illusion, a can be a pitch or a person, stealing is legal and you can spit anywhere you like except in the umpire’s eye or on the ball. Jim Murray

My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was keep swinging.

Any baseball is beautiful. No other small package comes as close to the ideal design and utility. It is a perfect object for a man’s hand. Pick it up and it instantly suggests its purpose; it is meant to be thrown a considerable distance — thrown hard and with precision. Roger Angell

You gotta be a man to play baseball for a living, but you gotta have a lot of little boy in you, too. Roy Campanella

What are we at the park for except to win? I’d trip my mother. I’d help her up, brusher her off, tell her I’m sorry. But mother don’t make it to third. Leo Durocher

People ask me what I do in winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. Rogers Hornsby

I became a good pitcher when I stopped trying to make them miss the ball and started trying to make them hit it. Sandy Koufax

The difference between the impossible and the possible lies in a mans determination Tommy Lasorda

Just take the ball and throw it where you want to. Throw strikes. Home plate don’t move. Satchel Paige

I see great things in baseball. It’s our game – the American game. It will take our people out‐of‐doors, fill them with oxygen, give them a larger physical stoicism. Tend to relieve us from being a nervous, dyspeptic set. Repair these losses, and be a blessing to us. Walt Whitman

You see, you spend a good piece of your life gripping a baseball, and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. Jim Bouton

62 Paul VI Catholic High School 2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Matthew Poyner Matt Poyner was a young man of great intelligence tempered with a great empathy for everyone he met. He was dedicated to his studies, his family, baseball, the 5th grade basketball team that he coached and his large circle of friends. As a baseball player Matt was a true competitor who gave 110% in all that he did and he worked tirelessly on his craft. While Matt was most often thought of as the great left handed pitcher and outfielder with blazing speed, he also loved country music, golf, basketball, football, cooking and enthusiastically supporting his siblings in their endeavors from the field to the theatrical stage and all things in between. Matt has been described as a young man with a “magnetic” personality; people were drawn to his optimism and love for life. Everyone who knew Matt loved Matt. #PoynerStrong Matt’s family has established The Matthew Vernon Poyner Memorial Foundation (MVP Memorial Foundation) to honor Matt’s memory by continuing to serve the charitable pursuits that were his personal passions.

Our Mission: The Matthew Vernon Poyner Memorial Foundation (MVPLegacy.org) provides scholarships and financial assistance to help young people, both college-bound and military veterans, who best embody the ideals of compassion for others, dedication to excellence, and love of athletic competition that Matthew so valued.

Our Focus: Our mission is to preserve and promote Matt’s legacy - his compassion for others, dedication to excellence, and love of competition through organized sports. The foundation will honor:

Matt’s competitive spirit and dedication to excellence - scholarships will be awarded to one male and one female college-bound senior at both Langley High School and Paul VI Catholic High School - the two high schools he attended and communities that supported him through his formative years.

Matt’s compassionate spirit - support will be awarded to charitable pursuits that convey his deep patriotism and desire to support Veterans and their families.

Matt’s life - as the Foundation grows, grants will be awarded for medical research into causes and prevention of sudden cardiac arrest in healthy young people.

Our Charity: We are a 501(c)(3) charity organization dedicated to honoring and preserving the memory of our MVP - Matthew Vernon Poyner.

76 Paul VI Catholic High School 2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Section 1 Paul VI Baseball Philosophy

The focus of the baseball program is not just winning and producing baseball players. The staff at PVI believes that the game of baseball can be used to develop successful and productive members of society. Life skills such as time management, teamwork and commitment are just a few of the lessons that are stressed to all players. PVI baseball players are held to a higher set of standards and are expected to be first-class citizens, students, and gentlemen. Along with those ideals, the PVI staff feels that the purpose of high school itself is to prepare kids for college, so the purpose of our high school baseball program is to also prepare kids for college baseball. A key philosophy in the PVI Baseball Program is that academic performance strengthens athletic performance. If a player “gets it done” in the classroom, baseball will take care of itself.

The basic goals of our coaching staff for our players are as follows: • To have fun, while appreciating the gift and glory of every day. • To produce high achieving, college bound students. • To produce gentlemen who are respectful, successful and productive members of society. • To help each student-athlete reach his maximum potential and play baseball at the next level.

Priorities for those who participate in our program are as follows (in order): 1) Faith and Family 2) School and Baseball 3) Everything Else

2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Paul VI Catholic High School 77 3 Section 2 Quality School, Quality Education

Pride Values Integrity

Paul VI Catholic High School is unique and our staff recognizes the uniqueness of each student. To this end, we offer the opportunity of a Catholic Education to a broad spectrum of students. Our school has a positive and encouraging atmosphere, allowing our students to benefit and achieve. Located in the heart of Fairfax County, PVI is the only Catholic High School in Fairfax County. Since it’s opening in 1983, PVI has made a commitment to a superb overall high school experience for young men just like you.

Paul VI is the place to be! Christian values are intertwined with academic excellence, enthusiastic spirit, championship athletics, award winning fine arts, enriching clubs and many other great activities.

Quality is better than quantity and the schedule at PVI is more conducive to overall success. PVI offers study halls during the school day, along with more student holidays and more half days than most other schools, thus making it easier to manage your time.

PVI is committed to excellence. We guide nearly 99% of our students to the best colleges in the nation. PVI graduates take Pride, Values and Integrity to the next level. We are always striving to make our students and our school even greater. By having you become a “Panther” we can do both!

Nearly a dozen PVI baseball players have been selected to the ACADEMIC ALL-STATE team during Coach Nolan’s tenure.

Quick Facts • Enrollment: 1000 • Christian Environment • Academic Excellence • Winning Athletic Tradition • Excellent Facilities • Friendly, Family Atmosphere • Central Location • Enthusiasm and School Spirit • A Sense of Community • A Place You Can Call Home

4 78 Paul VI Catholic High School 2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Section 3 Great Location You must ask yourself, is it really worth hours of commuting every day to go to another school, when PVI has everything you want and need, right here in the middle of Northern Virginia?

Paul VI is near many major roads in Northern Virginia including routes 29, 50, 123 and 236. PVI is also less than 2 miles from I-66 and less than 5 miles from the Beltway.

Our central location is a great convenience to our students. As a high school athlete, there are many demands placed on your time all year long. Being at a school that is centrally located makes life easier by getting you home sooner. Being at PVI gives you the time you need for proper rest, family activities, homework, a social life and more.

Great Facilities In 2004, Paul VI constructed a multi-million dollar, state of the art student activities center. The new building includes a new and larger gymnasium, new locker rooms and many other needed amenities. The addition of the new activities center gave PVI a second gym and a larger, upgraded weight room and fitness center, making the indoor facilities one of the area’s best. Plans are in the works to upgrade the outdoor facilities in just a few short years.

Along with the changes to the school building, many recent improvements to Panther Field (the home of PVI baseball) have allowed Paul VI to provide the finest baseball facility in the area for its players, thus creating an exciting and professional environment to practice and play. Home crowds regularly fill the bleachers around the complex!

The Panther Field Baseball Complex includes: • A fully enclosed Major League size field with seating for over 2500 fans. • Professional grounds maintenance by Game Day Inc., providing the top natural Bermuda grass and Camden Yards dirt playing surface in the area. • A state of the art, underground irrigation and drainage system. • Batting practice “turtle” and array of professional screens. • A 1600 square foot “press box & clubhouse” facility directly behind home plate with lockers, storage space and a coaches office. • An upgraded sound system for announcing and music. • An enlarged home dugout with large benches, bat rack, helmet rack and adequate equipment space. • Two 90’ x 20’ artificial turf batting and pitching facilities. • Multiple hitting stations set up to accommodate 20 hitters at one time.

Panther Field is the only on-campus home field in the WCAC with lights! Paul VI is one of only two schools in the conference able to host a night game. Already one of the finest baseball facilities in the metropolitan area, with the help of annual fundraising and dedicated volunteers, Panther Field will be one of the nation’s best in just a few short years. Plans for a reconfigured artificial turf facility are in the works!

Panther Field: One of the Area’s Best Natural Surfaces 5

2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Paul VI Catholic High School 79 A day game view of the Panthers in action at Panther Field from the right field foul line. Hundreds of fans regularly fill the bleachers behind home plate and in parts of the outfield, giving Paul VI Baseball one of the highest attendance rates in the area for high school baseball.

With the bleachers behind home plate already overflowing, PVI students fill the left field stands during a home match-up of perennial “Washington Post Top 10 Rivals”: DeMatha and PVI. The Panthers eventually triumphed in front of an estimated crowd of 1250. 6 80 Paul VI Catholic High School 2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Section 4 More Games equals More Experience… On a Higher Level The PVI Baseball Program plays as many games as any program in the area. Including scrimmages and post-season play, the Varsity team can play over 35 games every year. After the regular season, the Varsity plays in the WCAC Tournament at the University of Maryland’s Shipley Field. Plus, if the Varsity finishes in the top eight of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association (VISAA) Poll, they advance to the VA State Tournament for a chance to play at Richmond’s historic Shepherd Stadium. The Panthers have won 4 State Championships and 3 WCAC Titles in the past 12 seasons along with being nationally ranked in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010. PVI’s astounding record of 274-115 (.704) is evidence that PVI has played and won more games than any other area program from 2003 to 2014.

The JV team schedules at least 20 regular season contests per year (along with 3 to 4 scrimmages). That equates to at least seven more games than area public school J.V. will play. The JV has played and won as many games as any other area JV team since 2003 with a record of 185-63.

The quality of opponents at PVI is very high. As a member of the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), the Panthers always face a challenging conference schedule. PVI Baseball also schedules some of the best non-conference opponents from the Washington Metropolitan Area. The varsity team travels to Florida and/or South Carolina, and this year Southern California, during spring break for additional non-conference games. Our fundraising program covers the expense of our trip.

Within the WCAC from 2003 to 2015:  Seven of the WCAC’s 10 teams have been ranked in the Washington Post Top 10.  All Three WCAC Virginia teams have been ranked in the VISAA Top 5, PVI 11 out of 12 years, O’Connell, 5 times, Ireton 2 times.  Four WCAC teams have been Nationally Ranked by USA Today, ESPN-RISE and/or Baseball America, PVI, St. Johns, DeMatha and Good Counsel

The high level of competition not only makes you a better baseball player, it also draws the attention of college coaches and Major League scouts.

Other facts demonstrating our strength of schedule include:  Multiple games (annually) against Nationally Ranked opponents.  Multiple games (annually) against Washington Post Top 10 opponents.  Every WCAC Varsity team has won at least 12 games and/or finished .500 since 2003.  Over 60% of our opponents from 2003-2014 had a winning record.

The Washington Catholic Athletic Conference The WCAC is comprised of the 10 largest Catholic High Schools in the Washington Metropolitan Area.

VIRGINIA MARYLAND WASHINGTON, DC -Bishop Ireton HS Cardinals -DeMatha Catholic HS Stags -Archbishop Carroll HS Lions* -Bishop O’Connell HS Knights -Good Counsel HS Falcons -Gonzaga College HS Eagles -Paul VI Catholic HS Panthers -Bishop McNamara HS Mustangs -St. John’s College HS Cadets -St. Mary’s Ryken HS Knights * JV only

The Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association The VISAA consists of over 70 private high school baseball teams within the State of Virginia. The schools are grouped by size into three divisions. Paul VI plays at the most competitive, largest level… Division I Teams are ranked weekly throughout the season, with the final top eight earning an at large bid to the State Tournament.

“The Way”

A Winning Approach

Playing baseball at Paul VI Catholic High School gives you the “total package”. It’s something we like to call “The PVI Way”.

At PVI we make a year-round effort for our program and our players. Although the coaching staff encourages participation in other sports at PVI, there are opportunities for baseball players to improve all year through team baseball camps and baseball specific weight training & conditioning. In other words, we have all the camps you need. The staff also monitors the academic progress of baseball players throughout the school year. Our high school program is more like a college program. The idea is to prepare you for the next level. Those who plan to participate in other sports, are not disadvantaged or looked down upon by missing off- season baseball activities. We encourage multi-sport athletes.

Our off-season conditioning program runs from late November through the start of baseball season and focuses on flexibility, cardiovascular strength & endurance, muscular strength & endurance, speed, plyo-metric power and nutrition. The coaching staff is well educated in the latest techniques to improve athletic performance. From late November through late February the PVI Baseball Staff coordinates camps for the players at local indoor baseball facilities. Players have a chance to improve skills with the coaching staff and prepare themselves for the upcoming season. In the summer, the staff co-coordinates at least 1-2 weeks of baseball camps in order for players to once again improve skills in the presence of PVI coaches and college coaches. The staff also produces a master schedule of PVI players’ summer teams and makes regular visits to summer games.

The staff monitors academic progress year round through communication with the Dean of Academics and regular checks by the head coach on the school’s intranet grading system. Players are typically referred to tutors and teachers who provide assistance if necessary. A major emphasis is placed on the idea of academic performance strengthening athletic performance. Players often attend after-school study hall with the coaching staff throughout the course of the season. This not only gives the players extra-time for schoolwork, it also further emphasizes our philosophies. The Principal, the Dean of Students and the Dean of Academics also visit the players once a year during practice to make sure each student-athlete fully understands the expectations of the institution.

Coaches meet with players before the season to set roles and goals. Following the each season, players have a post season meeting with coaches to set new goals. The idea is to continue successes and improve upon weaknesses. Coaches also meet with players and parents to discuss college options. The coaching staff provides information on college recruiting, NCAA rules & standards and a realistic expectation for all interested players. The coaching staff is in constant contact with colleges throughout the country to ensure that every player who wants to go to the next level can get there.

“The PVI Way” takes high school baseball to a new level. The PVI coaching staff brings a collegiate approach and a professional approach to the program. The high standards, academic monitoring, personal interest in each player, study halls, off-season conditioning and organized practices mirror the protocol for college baseball. Players are told “If you want to be a pro, act like one now”. On that accord, our coaching staff makes every effort to run a program on a professional level. Although well experienced, the coaching staff is always looking for professional development opportunities. By attending clinics and collaborating with other high school coaches, college coaches and professionals, the PVI Staff focuses on properly teaching fundamentals with the latest techniques and the finer nuances of the game. 8

82 Paul VI Catholic High School 2016 PANTHERS BASEBALL MEDIA GUIDE Section 6 A Staff with Experience, Integrity & Connections Now in his 14th year within the PVI program, Head Coach Jeff Nolan and his staff have established PVI Baseball as one of the most successful and respected programs in America. He is highly respected, nationally and specifically for his work with pitchers, helping win 12 Championship Titles in the past 12 seasons and assisting 66 student-athletes to college baseball (32 NCAA Division I). Coach Nolan was named Mid-Atlantic High School Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 after being a finalist for the award twice previously. He was selected WCAC Coach of the Year in 2014. Nolan has over 25 years of coaching experience following a playing career that ended with an NCAA National Championship under the “College Coach of the Century”; John Scolinos. Over the years, Coach Nolan has been heavily involved with college placement and has coached college summer wood bat baseball in the Clark Griffith League.

Paul VI has maintained assembled an amazing group of assistants for years. Infield Coach Tad Davidovich (14th year) has Division I playing experience, has coached on the National Level in AAU, and also collegiately. Other assistants at the JV and Varsity levels bring years and years of high level playing and coaching experience to the program. Two members of the staff have been together for ten or more years. And the program features three alumni (former players) who have returned to coach at Paul VI after college and professional baseball careers. Mike McMenamin, (Class of 2008) a former All Conference (3nd Team) catcher and member of the Virginia Tech Coaching Staff two years ago, Chad Morgan, begins his second year coaching the Panthers’ catchers after completing his collegiate career as a catcher at Virginia Tech. John Ralston (Class of 2007), Rider University Shortstop) serves the varsity staff as 3rd base coach after being the head coach of the Junior Varsity team. Consistency breeds success!

The baseball staff is loaded with professionals who take their positions very seriously and realize the impact that their actions and decisions make on young lives. The staff also believes in the principles of a Catholic Education and focuses on using baseball as a tool to teach important life lessons. The coaches strongly believe in a wholesome, family atmosphere. Players at PVI aren’t simply looked at as baseball players; they are members of a family and each member is just as important as the next. Success off the field is clearly evident as well. Grade point averages rise as rapidly as winning percentages and the Panthers have built a reputation as a dedicated, respectful and hard working group of young men. ------The PVI Baseball Coaching Staff includes: • 7 former college baseball players,1 major league scout • 8 college degrees. 2 master’s degrees. • 2 certified strength and conditioning instructors…2 coaches certified in first aid, CPR and life saving techniques • 5 coaches who are married with children…Over 100 years combined coaching and teaching experience ------Paul VI baseball has a rich history of sending players to the next level. Since 2003, that tradition has simply grown stronger. Along with numerous “walk-on” invitees, the PVI staff has helped 66 PVI players land a college roster spot in the last decade. First and foremost, PVI baseball players will go on to college. Secondly, if the player is willing to find the “best fit”, he will go on to play college baseball. From the experience of our coaches, to the level of competition, to our off-season workouts; this is a high school program that rivals a top college program. I am very grateful for my experiences at PVI” -Alex Gregory Infielder, Class of 2005 All-Met in 2005, All-State in 2004 & 2005, All-WCAC in 2004 & 2005, Co-MVP 2005 Four Year Starter at Radford University. Drafted by the New York Mets, 17th Round, 2009. “The positive impact of PVI Baseball’s off-season program on my son has been remarkable. Since he began the program three months ago his physical condition has improved noticeably. Even better, his self- confidence is far above what it was at the beginning of last baseball season. His attitude toward his coaches and teammates has gone from positive to deeply respectful as he learns and works hard together with them. He can’t wait for this season to begin– because he knows we have an edge and we’re going to win” -Bill Vogt Father of Pete Vogt: … Class of 2003 “Paul VI is a program that will continually produce good players, good students and good people. The coaching staff is well experienced in every aspect of running a high quality operation. I’ve seen the highs and lows of high school programs throughout the country and anyone who has the chance to play at PVI should feel blessed” -Bill Buck Regional Scout, Detroit Tigers 2002 Mid-Atlantic Scout of the Year

“It’s a pleasure watching PVI play baseball. It’s refreshing to go to a high school game where people do things the right way. PVI kids play hard, hustle and compete… all the qualities needed to be successful in life. Hats off to the coaching staff for being good mentors to young people and ambassadors of the game” -Karl Kuhn Pitching Coach, University of Virginia 2015 National Champions
