The 17-man first team, chosen by performances up to regional playoffs and picked by the staff of Collegiate Baseball newspaper, features 12 conference players or pitchers of the year, including: • LHP Justin Simmons, Texas (Pitcher of Year Big 12 Conference) • RHP Jeremy Guthrie, Stanford (Pitcher of Year Pac-10 Conference) • RHP Bryan Bullington, Ball State (Pitcher of Year Mid-American Conference) • RHP John Tetuan, Wichita State (Pitcher of Year Missouri Valley Conference) • RHP Brad Sullivan, Houston (Pitcher of Year Conference USA) • RHP Tim Stauffer, Richmond (Pitcher of Year Atlantic 10 Conference) • C Jed Morris, Nebraska (Player of Year Big 12 Conference) • 1B Nate Gold, Gonzaga (Player of Year West Coast Conference) • 2B Rickie Weeks, Southern (Player of Year Southwestern Athletic Conference) • SS Khalil Greene, Clemson (Player of Year Atlantic Coast Conference) • OF Steve Stanley, Notre Dame (Player of Year Big East Conference) • OF Bob Malek, Michigan State (Player of Year Big Ten Conference) The first team features six starting pitchers who posted a combined 69-8 record with an ERA of 2.16. Ball State's Bryan Bullington leads first team All-American pitchers with 139 strikeouts. Richmond's Tim Stauffer posted an amazing 12 complete games in 16 starts this season. The offense features power, line drive hitters and speed. The first team belted 175 homers (average 18.5 per player). Seven hit 21 or more doubles this season. As far as speed, Notre Dame's Steve Stanley led first teamers with 31. The first team also features Collegiate Baseball’s National Player of The Year in SS Khalil Greene of Clemson. Greene's .475 batting average is second in Atlantic Coast Conference history for a single season. He also belted 22 homers and 25 doubles during a mammoth offensive season. He has re-written the Clemson and ACC record books. He ranks first in ACC history and second in NCAA history with 384 career hits. He enters regional action with a 27-game hitting streak, third longest in Clemson history. The following are the first, second and third team Louisville Slugger All-Americans for the 2002 season. The Kansas City Royals agreed to a three-year deal with Jeremy Guthrie that pays him $5 million on 2013, $11 million in 2014 and $9 million in 2015. He went 8-12 with a 4.76 ERA and 1.41 WHIP. Bailey went 13-10 with a 3.68 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP. Latos went 14-4 with a 2.48 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. It’s a bit apples and oranges: Guthrie is a free agent; Bailey is arbitration-eligible for the second time, Latos for the first. But the point is starting pitching — even mediocre starting pitching — is expensive. SIX ADDED: The Reds added right-handers Carlos Contreras, Daniel Corcino, Curtis Partch and Josh Ravin, left-hander Ismael Guillon and outfielder Yorman Rodriguez to the roster in order to protect them from the Rule 5 draft. The 2002 college baseball season has officially begun. While most of the schools do not open play until Feb. 1, 2002, there are some that have already opened their seasons entering the final week of January. The 2002 college baseball season promises to be one of the most exciting seasons in memory. Can Miami make it three in a row at Rosenblatt Stadium? The defending champs return a number of key players and will play one of the nation's most demanding schedules. How will baseball at Alex Box Stadium differ now that legendary Skip Bertman is no longer in the first base dugout? New Tigers skipper Ray "Smoke" Laval opened practice on Saturday, Jan. 19, and is the favorite to win the SEC in a vote by the league's 12 head coaches. Can Nebraska claim its third straight 50-win season and turn Rosenblatt Stadium into another sea of red at the 2003 College World Series? Will Stanford journey back to America's heartland again this season, boasting another talented team under Mark Marquess? Who will be the eight teams to fight for the 2003 national championship in June? All of these questions will be answered over the course of the next 21 weeks as the college baseball season unfolds. It promises to be an exciting year. Off the field, there is excitement, too. There will be a trip to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum this year as the annual CoSIDA convention will be held in Rochester, N.Y.

Right-hander Cal Quantrill, along with first baseman Josh Naylor, have been promoted to Double-A San Antonio after representing the Padres and Canada in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday. To make room, right-hander Kyle Lloyd was promoted to Triple-A El Paso and infielder Fernando Perez was sent down to high Single-A Lake Elsinore. The eighth overall pick in the 2016 draft, the 22-year-old Quantrill was 6-5 with a 3.67 ERA, 76 strikeouts, 24 walks and a 1.38 WHIP in 73 2/3 innings at high Single-A Lake Elsinore, his first full year of pro ball since Tommy John surgery his sophomore year at Stanford.

    DICK HOWSER TROPHY COMMITTEE Contact: Bo Carter ([email protected]) June 16, 2018 FLORIDA’S SINGER CHOSEN AS 2018 DICK HOWSER TROPHY RECIPIENT OMAHA, Neb. – Pitcher Brady Singer, regarded as one of the top pitchers in the storied history of Florida Gators baseball, is the 32nd recipient of the Dick Howser Trophy, presented by The Game Headwear, as college baseball's Player of the Year. Singer joins UF’s and Seattle Mariners catcher Mike Zunino (2012) as the first two Gators standout to capture the Howser Trophy. The Howser Trophy committee and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced the award Saturday at a national news conference at TD Ameritrade Park prior to the opening game of the 72nd annual NCAA Division I Baseball College World Series. Singer is the seventh student-athlete from the Southeastern Conference to win the trophy and third in five years after the awards went to A.J. Reed of Kentucky and the Houston Astros in 2014 and Andrew Benintendi of Arkansas and the Boston Red Sox in 2015. Singer, a 6-5, 220-pound right-handed pitcher from Eustis, Florida, was the 2018 SEC Pitcher of the Year. He also garnered 2018 consensus first team All-American honors and was the No. 18 player chosen in the recent Major League Baseball Draft by the Kansas City Royals, the organization Dick Howser managed to the 1985 World Series crown. His most recent pitching outing was against fellow 2018 Dick Howser Trophy finalist pitcher Casey Mize of Auburn on June 9. Singer outdueled the AU mound star with 6 2/3 innings pitched, nine strikeouts, two walks, two runs (both earned), and a key 8-2 win by the Gators to open the NCAA Gainesville Super Regional.
