Monday 11th May 2020 L.O. I can read and give an assessment of a story

THE HERO’S JOURNEY is a template (a bit like a story mountain) that has been used for some of the greatest stories ever told, all the way back from ancient myths to modern classics like Narnia and . Over the next three weeks, we are going to use it to write our own story

One of the reasons STAR WARS is such a great movie is it because it follows the HERO’S JOURNEY model. Today, you are going to read / watch this version of the Hero’s journey and see how it fits into the format for our first act!

The subtitles just refer to the stages of the story - don’t worry about them yet! Just read the story and if you have internet access look up / click on the clips on youtube.

EXERCISE In your books, give a brief summary of the story - did you like it? Which characters did you like? What do you think will happen next?

Tuesday 12th May 2020 L.O. I can answer vocab comprehension questions

Today we will be looking at some of the EXCITING vocabulary used in the story. Maybe you can use some of them in your own story! But first we need to work out what they mean.

Read back through the story and make a note of any words you're not sure of. Have a go at working out what they mean based on the context (the words around)

Remember this type of table from comp lessons back in school? You will soon!

Word and example in text Definition Your own example

Humble A bleak and empty place Who could you describe as ‘Luke Skywalker was a a humble person? poor and humble boy’

Desolate Evil, mean or cruel people Can you describe a place ‘He lived or a scorching as being desolate? and desolate planet’

Mischievous To be very emotionally What might a mischievous ‘It was called R2-D2 and it affected by something person do? was a mischievous, cheeky robot

Example (copy out into books for all the words, followed by a definition and an example)

Humble

‘Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy’

Definition - Humble means being modest, or not thinking yourself that important.

Example - Even though I am a brilliant writer, I am very humble.

Then do the same for Desolate, Mischievous, Vicious, Overwhelmed and Scum

Wednesday 13th May 2020 Aim: I can practise using powerful adjectives to describe characters and settings

In your books draw a quick table like this. We are going to put some words into this table to describe good characters, bad characters, nice places and scary places.

Character - Good Setting - Good

Character - Bad Setting - Bad

Let’s start with some of the words we looked at yesterday

HUMBLE - This means being modest, or not thinking yourself that important. This is a good character, so it goes in the Character-Good box

DESOLATE - This describes a A bleak and empty place. We know it’s a place and it doesn’t sound very nice, so it must be a SETTING-Bad

MISCHIEVOUS- This means Cheeky, naughty or capable of playing tricks or pranks. Ah, a tricky one! Tricks are bad if they are too naughty but this isn’t too bad. So this goes in the Character- Good Box

VICIOUS-This means Violent and aggressive. Easy one, that’s definitely CHARACTER-BAD

After that, your table should look like this

Character - Good Setting - Good Humble Mischievous

Character - Bad Setting - Bad Vicious Desolate

Get the idea? Good! Let’s add some more words to our box then. Have a think where these words could go

Heroic Tranquil Scorched Merciless Courageous Cruel Beautiful

Bleak Brave Evil Lucious Jagged

You could even add some of your own words to the box!

EXTENSION: Have a go at writing sentences describing Characters or Settings with some of this INCREDIBLE VOCABULARY! Thursday 14th May 2020 Aim: I can write a description of the Ordinary world and Hero

Today, you are going to start writing your own call to adventure! We need to briefly introduce our main character and their home world. We’ll start by re-reading this section from the story -

Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy who lived with his aunt and uncle in a scorching and desolate planet world called Tatooine. His job was to fix robots on the family farm and he spent his free time flying planes through the rocky canyons. He loved his aunt and uncle but dreamed of a more exciting and adventurous life

It was only 3 sentences long but gave a good start to the story. Here’s what you need to do

● Introduce your hero - what are they like? Where do they live? Who does they live with ● What is their job? What do they like to do when they’re not working? ● What do they want to do?

Steps to Success I can introduce the character I can describe their ordinary world I can use powerful adjectives

You can use this template and fill in the blanks for your own story like we have done in the past in class (Fill in the blanks for your own story - don’t write the words in brackets!)

____(Hero name)______was a ____(adj)____ and _____(adj)______(boy/girl)___ who lived with their _____(who did they live with?)_____ in a ____(adj)_____ and _____(adj)____ planet world called ______(name of planet)______. Friday 15th May 2020 Aim: I can write my call to adventure and refusal of the call

Today, you are going to continue writing your Hero’s journey, now moving on to the call to adventure and your hero’s refusal of the call! We’ll start by re-reading this section from the story -

CALL TO ADVENTURE and REFUSAL OF THE CALL

One day, Luke found a broken old R2 astromech droid. It was called R2-D2 and it was a mischievous, cheeky robot who made lots of bleeps and flashes. When Luke was cleaning it up, the droid played a secret message of a beautiful princess asking for help from Obi Wan Kenobi.

Luke had lots of other jobs to do at the farm so he ignored the message from the droid. “Sorry, R2, I can’t help you, I’ve got some power converters to maintain” Luke said, sadly.

● Your hero finds a mysterious object (or meets a mysterious character) ● Describe the object / character ● Your hero finds a secret message (maybe asking for help?) - what does it say? ● Your hero says they can’t help

Steps to Success I can introduce and describe the mysterious object I can introduce and describe the message I can use powerful adjectives Challenge: I can use speech marks

Monday 18th May 2020 Aim: I can box up and summarise a story

We are writing our own Hero’s journey based on the classic story of Star Wars. Last week, you introduced your Hero, your Ordinary world, the Call to adventure and your hero’s refusal of the call. You are writing in a centuries old tradition of fantastic storytelling! This week we are going to write about meeting the mentor and crossing the threshold into an extraordinary world of adventure.

Today,to help you get to grips with the format (and maybe to help plan your next step, we are going to box up / summarise what’s happened in the story. The good news for todays work is the less you write, the better! Let’s start by reading through the story again;

ORDINARY WORLD

Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy who lived with his aunt and uncle in a scorching and desolate planet world called Tatooine. His job was to fix robots on the family farm and and he spent his free time flying planes through the rocky canyons. He loved his aunt and uncle but dreamed of a more exciting and adventurous life

CALL TO ADVENTURE

One day, Luke found a broken old R2 astromech droid. It was called R2-D2 and it was a mischievous, cheeky robot who made lots of bleeps and flashes. When Luke was cleaning it up, the droid played a secret message of a beautiful princess asking for help from Obi Wan Kenobi.

REFUSAL OF THE CALL

Luke had lots of other jobs to do at the farm so he ignored the message from the droid. “Sorry, R2, I can’t help you, I’ve got some power converters to maintain” Luke said, sadly.

MEETING THE MENTOR

One day, R2 D2 ran away from the farm. Luke went to catch him in his landspeeder but he was attacked by vicious Tusken raiders! A mystical looking old man called Obi Wan Kenobi scared the fearsome warriors away. “Thank you for saving me. Who are you?” asked Luke, feeling overwhelmed. “My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi” replied the wise, old man. “This robot has a message for you, then” Luke answered, open mouthed. They pressed a few buttons on the rusty old droid and a message started playing “Please deliver this message to my father on Alderaan” the message from the beautiful princess said. “Before we set off, I have something for you Luke,” Obi-Wan said, as he passed Luke a bright blue laser sword that shimmered and hummed. “This was your father’s Lightsaber”

CROSSING THE THRESHOLD

Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids set off on a journey to find a spaceship and some trustworthy friends to help them get to the planet Alderaan to help Princess Leia. As they approached the dangerous spaceport of Mos Eisley, Obi-Wan warned Luke “Mos Eisley - You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be careful” as they set off with trepidation into the mysterious city.

Your job is to sum up each section in under ten words - so you can only include the important details! (don’t worry if you go over by a few words!)

Let’s have a look at the first section together -

ORDINARY WORLD

Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy who lived with his aunt and uncle in a scorching and desolate planet world called Tatooine. His job was to fix robots on the family farm and he spent his free time flying planes through the rocky canyons. He loved his aunt and uncle but dreamed of a more exciting and adventurous life.

The important parts are that he was poor, he lived on a with his family and wanted an adventure. So my summary for this section could be

A poor boy lived on a desert planet with his family and wanted an adventure

15 words! Not bad. See if you can do better for the other sections in your books!

Tuesday 19th May 2020 Aim: I can answer retrieval comprehension questions on a story

Today you will be answering retrieval comprehension questions on a section of the story. Remember, with retrieval, we are plucking the answers out of the text so scanning and looking for key words from the questions is a good start to answer these questions

Questions (Answer in full sentences, in your books)

1. How did Luke chase after R2 D2? 2. How was Luke saved from the Tusken raiders? 3. What caused the message to start playing? 4. What does the message ask them to do? 5. What does Obi-Wan give to Luke? 6. What did they set off to find to allow them to start their journey? 7. Where did they go? 8. Why does Obi-Wan warn Luke to be careful?

Extension: Inference questions These questions are a bit trickier - the text doesn’t tell us outright, like retrieval questions, so we need to act like detectives, looking for clues and read between the lines. Have a go!

1. Why do you think R2 D2 runs away? 2. Why do you think Obi-Wan helped Luke by scaring away the Tusken raiders? 3. How do you think Luke feels when he finds out the old man is Obi-Wan? 4. How do you think Obi-Wan knows that Mos Eisley is such a dangerous place?

Wednesday 20th May 2020 L.O. I can use quotation marks to show speech

Remember the rules of speech we have been practising? The golden rules is SPEECH MARKS GO AROUND SPEECH!! (Speech is the words that come out of a character’s mouth)

Here’s a reminder

1.) Before someone starts speaking, use a quotation / speech mark (a floating 66) 2.) Write out what they say, including any punctuation 3.) When they’ve finished speaking, use another quotation / speech mark (a floating 99) 4.) Now say who said it

For example (speech is in italic) -

“Thank you for saving me. Who are you?” asked Luke, feeling overwhelmed. “My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi” replied the wise, old man.

Today’s work Carry on this conversation in your books, adding speech marks

“Thank you for saving me. Who are you?” asked Luke, feeling overwhelmed. “My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi” replied the wise, old man.

The Jundland wastes are not to be travelled lightly. Those vicious Tusken raiders will be back, and in greater numbers!

Bleeep Blooop Boop

Tell me young Luke, what brings you out this far?

This little droid. I think he’s searching for his former master, but I’ve never seen this much dedication in a droid

Extension: Carry on the conversation between Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan. Can you remember what happens next?

Thursday 21st May 2020 Aim: I can write the ‘Meeting the mentor’ section of my story

Today, you are going to carry on writing your own Hero’s journey! Today we’ll be writing about your hero being rescued by and meeting his mentor (a bit like a guide or teacher)

We’ll start by re-reading this section from the story -

Meeting the Mentor One day, R2 D2 ran away from the farm.

This is what you need to cover in todays write -

● Your hero gets in trouble - maybe they are attacked - include action! ● A mysterious mentor comes and rescues them - describe them! ● Include speech between the Mentor and Hero - Does the mentor ask the Hero to go on an adventure? To help them do something? ● Your mentor gives your hero a mysterious or magical weapon - describe it. Whose was it?

Time Openers you can use: One Day, Suddenly, Soon after, Then, Finally, after a while, eventually

Steps to Success I can write exciting action sequences I can use speech marks to show speech I can use powerful adjectives Extension: I can use time openers

Friday 22nd May 2020 Aim: I can write the ‘Crossing the threshold’ section of my story

Today, you are going to continue writing your Hero’s journey, now moving on to crossing the threshold from your hero’s ordinary world to an exciting, magical extraordinary world full of excitement and adventure. This is the end of the first act.

We’ll start by re-reading this section from the story -

CROSSING THE THRESHOLD

Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids set off on a journey to find a spaceship and some trustworthy friends to help them get to the planet Alderaan to help Princess Leia. As they approached the dangerous spaceport of Mos Eisley, Obi-Wan warned Luke “Mos Eisley - You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be careful” as they set off with trepidation into the mysterious city.

This is what you need to cover in todays write -

● Your group setting off to the first stop in the extraordinary world. Who’s in the gang? How do they travel? Do they take anything? ● Maybe a warning from the mentor (Include speech) ● A brief description of the new setting. Use your powerful adjectives and your killer imagination!! (But don’t go in yet!)
