Monday 11Th May 2020 L.O. I Can Read and Give an Assessment of a Story Monday 11th May 2020 L.O. I can read and give an assessment of a story THE HERO’S JOURNEY is a template (a bit like a story mountain) that has been used for some of the greatest stories ever told, all the way back from ancient myths to modern classics like Narnia and Star wars. Over the next three weeks, we are going to use it to write our own story One of the reasons STAR WARS is such a great movie is it because it follows the HERO’S JOURNEY model. Today, you are going to read / watch this version of the Hero’s journey and see how it fits into the format for our first act! The subtitles just refer to the stages of the story - don’t worry about them yet! Just read the story and if you have internet access look up / click on the clips on youtube. ORDINARY WORLD Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy who lived with his aunt and uncle in a scorching and desolate planet world called Tatooine. His job was to fix robots on the family farm and and he spent his free time flying planes through the rocky canyons. He loved his aunt and uncle but dreamed of a more exciting and adventurous life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wJa1L1ZCqU Search for ‘Luke Skywalker binary sunset’ CALL TO ADVENTURE One day, Luke found a broken old R2 astromech droid. It was called R2-D2 and it was a mischievous, cheeky robot who made lots of bleeps and flashes. When Luke was cleaning it up, the droid played a secret message of a beautiful princess asking for help from Obi Wan Kenobi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKNBFZ3PHco Search for ‘Star wars Luke R2’ REFUSAL OF THE CALL Luke had lots of other jobs to do at the farm so he ignored the message from the droid. “Sorry, R2, I can’t help you, I’ve got some power converters to maintain” Luke said, sadly. MEETING THE MENTOR One day, R2 D2 ran away from the farm. Luke went to catch him in his landspeeder but he was attacked by vicious Tusken raiders! A mystical looking old man called Obi Wan Kenobi scared the fearsome warriors away. “Thank you for saving me. Who are you?” asked Luke, feeling overwhelmed. “My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi” replied the wise, old man. “This robot has a message for you, then” Luke answered, open mouthed. They pressed a few buttons on the rusty old droid and a message started playing “Please deliver this message to my father on Alderaan” the message from the beautiful princess said. “Before we set off, I have something for you Luke,” Obi-Wan said, as he passed Luke a bright blue laser sword that shimmered and hummed. “This was your father’s Lightsaber” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4UhQ4hZzRM In youtube search for ‘Ben Kenobi appears’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUaxXsqGeFI In youtube search for ‘ Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope’ CROSSING THE THRESHOLD Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids set off on a journey to find a spaceship and some trustworthy friends to help them get to the planet Alderaan to help Princess Leia. As they approached the dangerous spaceport of Mos Eisley, Obi-Wan warned Luke “Mos Eisley - You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be careful” as they set off with trepidation into the mysterious city. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcb4_QwP6fE Search for ‘Obi wan scum villainy’ EXERCISE In your books, give a brief summary of the story - did you like it? Which characters did you like? What do you think will happen next? Tuesday 12th May 2020 L.O. I can answer vocab comprehension questions Today we will be looking at some of the EXCITING vocabulary used in the story. Maybe you can use some of them in your own story! But first we need to work out what they mean. Read back through the story and make a note of any words you're not sure of. Have a go at working out what they mean based on the context (the words around) Remember this type of table from comp lessons back in school? You will soon! Word and example in text Definition Your own example Humble A bleak and empty place Who could you describe as ‘Luke Skywalker was a a humble person? poor and humble boy’ Desolate Evil, mean or cruel people Can you describe a place ‘He lived or a scorching as being desolate? and desolate planet’ Mischievous To be very emotionally What might a mischievous ‘It was called R2-D2 and it affected by something person do? was a mischievous, cheeky robot Vicious Being modest or not How might a vicious ‘He was attacked by thinking yourself that person or animal behave? vicious Tusken raiders!’ important Overwhelmed Cheeky, naughty or What might make you feel “Thank you for saving me. capable of playing tricks or overwhelmed? Who are you?” asked pranks Luke, feeling overwhelmed. Scum Violent and aggresive What kind of person would “Mos Eisley - You will you describe as scum? never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. Example (copy out into books for all the words, followed by a definition and an example) Humble ‘Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy’ Definition - Humble means being modest, or not thinking yourself that important. Example - Even though I am a brilliant writer, I am very humble. Then do the same for Desolate, Mischievous, Vicious, Overwhelmed and Scum Wednesday 13th May 2020 Aim: I can practise using powerful adjectives to describe characters and settings In your books draw a quick table like this. We are going to put some words into this table to describe good characters, bad characters, nice places and scary places. Character - Good Setting - Good Character - Bad Setting - Bad Let’s start with some of the words we looked at yesterday HUMBLE - This means being modest, or not thinking yourself that important. This is a good character, so it goes in the Character-Good box DESOLATE - This describes a A bleak and empty place. We know it’s a place and it doesn’t sound very nice, so it must be a SETTING-Bad MISCHIEVOUS- This means Cheeky, naughty or capable of playing tricks or pranks. Ah, a tricky one! Tricks are bad if they are too naughty but this isn’t too bad. So this goes in the Character- Good Box VICIOUS-This means Violent and aggressive. Easy one, that’s definitely CHARACTER-BAD After that, your table should look like this Character - Good Setting - Good Humble Mischievous Character - Bad Setting - Bad Vicious Desolate Get the idea? Good! Let’s add some more words to our box then. Have a think where these words could go Heroic Tranquil Scorched Merciless Courageous Cruel Beautiful Bleak Brave Evil Lucious Jagged You could even add some of your own words to the box! EXTENSION: Have a go at writing sentences describing Characters or Settings with some of this INCREDIBLE VOCABULARY! Thursday 14th May 2020 Aim: I can write a description of the Ordinary world and Hero Today, you are going to start writing your own call to adventure! We need to briefly introduce our main character and their home world. We’ll start by re-reading this section from the story - Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy who lived with his aunt and uncle in a scorching and desolate planet world called Tatooine. His job was to fix robots on the family farm and he spent his free time flying planes through the rocky canyons. He loved his aunt and uncle but dreamed of a more exciting and adventurous life It was only 3 sentences long but gave a good start to the story. Here’s what you need to do ● Introduce your hero - what are they like? Where do they live? Who does they live with ● What is their job? What do they like to do when they’re not working? ● What do they want to do? Steps to Success I can introduce the character I can describe their ordinary world I can use powerful adjectives You can use this template and fill in the blanks for your own story like we have done in the past in class (Fill in the blanks for your own story - don’t write the words in brackets!) ____(Hero name)__________ was a ____(adj)____ and _____(adj)____ ____(boy/girl)___ who lived with their _____(who did they live with?)_____ in a ____(adj)_____ and _____(adj)____ planet world called ______(name of planet)_______. Their job was to _____(job)____ on the _______(where did they work?)_______ and they spent his free time _____(what did they do?)_____ in the _____(where did they do it?)_____. They loved their _____(who did they live with?)_____ but dreamed of ____(what do they want to do?)____ Friday 15th May 2020 Aim: I can write my call to adventure and refusal of the call Today, you are going to continue writing your Hero’s journey, now moving on to the call to adventure and your hero’s refusal of the call! We’ll start by re-reading this section from the story - CALL TO ADVENTURE and REFUSAL OF THE CALL One day, Luke found a broken old R2 astromech droid. It was called R2-D2 and it was a mischievous, cheeky robot who made lots of bleeps and flashes.

Trouble on Tatooine How the Grinth Stole Lifeday Anchorhead: The players have accepted a contract that had them picking up a bunch of cargo that had been floating in space for a few hundred years. This was next to a wrecked ship that had been salvaged of everything usable. The contact says you are to deliver this cargo to Docking Bay 94 in Mos Eisley. Then, this Watto fella gives you an astromech and some credits. The “Enter Player ship name” emerges from hyperspace over the desert planet of Tatooine. This barren wasteland is the furthest thing from the ideal planet to celebrate Life Day at. At least there are some good cantinas down there. Allow the PCs to make last minute preparations before landing. Are they preparing weapons they want to carry off the ship? Are they hiding contraband? You land in Mos Eisley at Docking Bay 94, excited to conclude this transaction. Of course, as you disembark, you realize this deal is no better than any other. There is no cargo skiff, no transport and most annoying of all… no astromech. Instead, there’s a buck-toothed Twi’lek in fine robes. He steps toward you as your feet touch down on Tatooine sand. The Twi’lek bows courteously and says, “Greetings. I am Bibfort, Mr. Watto’s personal assistant. I trust you had no problem acquiring the cargo? Mr. Watto would like for me to inspect it if I may?” PCs can stay and watch Bibfort spend three hours going overthe cargo in excruciating detail, or they can head to the cantina.

Draft version July 1, 2020 Typeset using LATEX twocolumn style in AASTeX62 The Gaia-Kepler Stellar Properties Catalog. II. Planet Radius Demographics as a Function of Stellar Mass and Age Travis A. Berger,1 Daniel Huber,1 Eric Gaidos,2 Jennifer L. van Saders,1 and Lauren M. Weiss1 1Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawai`i, 2680 Woodlawn Drive, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA 2Department of Earth Sciences, University of Hawai`i at M¯anoa, Honolulu, HI 96822, USA ABSTRACT Studies of exoplanet demographics require large samples and precise constraints on exoplanet host stars. Using the homogeneous Kepler stellar properties derived using Gaia Data Release 2 by Berger et al.(2020), we re-compute Kepler planet radii and incident fluxes and investigate their distributions with stellar mass and age. We measure the stellar mass dependence of the planet radius valley to +0:21 be d log Rp/d log M? = 0:26−0:16, consistent with the slope predicted by a planet mass dependence on stellar mass (0.24{0.35) and core-powered mass-loss (0.33). We also find first evidence of a stellar age dependence of the planet populations straddling the radius valley. Specifically, we determine that the fraction of super-Earths (1{1.8 R⊕) to sub-Neptunes (1.8{3.5 R⊕) increases from 0.61 ± 0.09 at young ages (< 1 Gyr) to 1.00 ± 0.10 at old ages (> 1 Gyr), consistent with the prediction by core-powered mass- loss that the mechanism shaping the radius valley operates over Gyr timescales. Additionally, we find a tentative decrease in the radii of relatively cool (Fp < 150 F⊕) sub-Neptunes over Gyr timescales, which suggests that these planets may possess H/He envelopes instead of higher mean molecular weight atmospheres.

A desperate plan to attack the Dreaded Imperial capitol of Had Abbadon and destroy the Death Stars before they are completed has been put into effect. Rebel commandos, led by Princess Leia, have made their way into the very heart of the Galactic Empire: as the first step toward the final battle for freedom…. Pan down to reveal the planet HAD ABBADON, capitol of the Galactic Empire. The gray planet’s surface is completely covered with cities and is shrouded in a sickly brown haze. Orbiting the polluted planet is a small, green, moon, a sparkling contrast to the foreboding sphere beyond. A large IMPERIAL TRANSPORT glides into frame. WE follow it, as it rockets toward the Imperial capitol. Four small TIE FIGHTERS escort the larger craft. The web-like structures of two Death Stars under construction loom in the distance as the transport approaches. Resting to one side of the half completed space station is Darth Vader’s super STAR DESTROYER and several ships of the Imperial fleet. One of the TIE Fighters escorting the Imperial transport begins to wobble and drops back with its engine sputtering.
