Monday 11Th May 2020 L.O. I Can Read and Give an Assessment of a Story

Monday 11th May 2020 L.O. I can read and give an assessment of a story THE HERO’S JOURNEY is a template (a bit like a story mountain) that has been used for some of the greatest stories ever told, all the way back from ancient myths to modern classics like Narnia and Star wars. Over the next three weeks, we are going to use it to write our own story One of the reasons STAR WARS is such a great movie is it because it follows the HERO’S JOURNEY model. Today, you are going to read / watch this version of the Hero’s journey and see how it fits into the format for our first act! The subtitles just refer to the stages of the story - don’t worry about them yet! Just read the story and if you have internet access look up / click on the clips on youtube. ORDINARY WORLD Luke Skywalker was a poor and humble boy who lived with his aunt and uncle in a scorching and desolate planet world called Tatooine. His job was to fix robots on the family farm and and he spent his free time flying planes through the rocky canyons. He loved his aunt and uncle but dreamed of a more exciting and adventurous life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wJa1L1ZCqU Search for ‘Luke Skywalker binary sunset’ CALL TO ADVENTURE One day, Luke found a broken old R2 astromech droid. It was called R2-D2 and it was a mischievous, cheeky robot who made lots of bleeps and flashes. When Luke was cleaning it up, the droid played a secret message of a beautiful princess asking for help from Obi Wan Kenobi. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKNBFZ3PHco Search for ‘Star wars Luke R2’ REFUSAL OF THE CALL Luke had lots of other jobs to do at the farm so he ignored the message from the droid. “Sorry, R2, I can’t help you, I’ve got some power converters to maintain” Luke said, sadly. MEETING THE MENTOR One day, R2 D2 ran away from the farm. Luke went to catch him in his landspeeder but he was attacked by vicious Tusken raiders! A mystical looking old man called Obi Wan Kenobi scared the fearsome warriors away. “Thank you for saving me. Who are you?” asked Luke, feeling overwhelmed. “My name is Obi-Wan Kenobi” replied the wise, old man. “This robot has a message for you, then” Luke answered, open mouthed. They pressed a few buttons on the rusty old droid and a message started playing “Please deliver this message to my father on Alderaan” the message from the beautiful princess said. “Before we set off, I have something for you Luke,” Obi-Wan said, as he passed Luke a bright blue laser sword that shimmered and hummed. “This was your father’s Lightsaber” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s4UhQ4hZzRM In youtube search for ‘Ben Kenobi appears’ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUaxXsqGeFI In youtube search for ‘ Help me Obi Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope’ CROSSING THE THRESHOLD Luke, Obi-Wan and the droids set off on a journey to find a spaceship and some trustworthy friends to help them get to the planet Alderaan to help Princess Leia. As they approached the dangerous spaceport of Mos Eisley, Obi-Wan warned Luke “Mos Eisley - You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be careful” as they set off with trepidation into the mysterious city. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xcb4_QwP6fE Search for ‘Obi wan scum villainy’ EXERCISE In your books, give a brief summary of the story - did you like it? Which characters did you like? What do you think will happen next? Tuesday 12th May 2020 L.O. This is a good character, so it goes in the Character-Good box DESOLATE - This describes a A bleak and empty place. We know it’s a place and it doesn’t sound very nice, so it must be a SETTING-Bad MISCHIEVOUS- This means Cheeky, naughty or capable of playing tricks or pranks. Ah, a tricky one! Tricks are bad if they are too naughty but this isn’t too bad. So this goes in the Character- Good Box VICIOUS-This means Violent and aggressive.
