MEETING THE MOMENT

OCTOBER 12 OCTOBER 21 GLOBALCONFERENCE.ORG MILKEN INSTITUTE

MEETING THE MOMENT

The Milken Institute Global Conference convenes the best minds in the world to tackle some of its most stubborn challenges. Our commitment to the power of ideas has set this event apart for more than two decades. It is a unique experience in which individuals with the capital, power, and influence to change the world connect with those whose expertise and creativity are reinventing health, technology, philanthropy, industry, and media. The 23rd annual Global Conference will center on the theme of “Meeting the Moment.” In addition to the wide-ranging content for which the event is known, the agenda will address the dual crises of a global pandemic and social injustice, calling us all to reflect on what matters most. These events are reshaping our reality, making clear the urgent need for intersectional thinking, cross-sector partnership, and international leadership. While this year’s flagship event may look different, the Milken Institute’s community and impact potential remain the same. Join us as we work to build a healthier and more just world for all. MILKEN INSTITUTE

Welcome to the 23rd Annual Milken Institute Global Conference

2020 has been an unprecedented year by any measure: a once-in-a-century pandemic has tragically taken the lives of more than one million people; a volatile economy has resulted in the closure of more than 3 million U.S. small businesses and put millions out of work; and finally, we have come face-to-face with a long-smoldering reckoning on and society’s ability to create truly equal opportunities for all.

That is why the theme of our 23rd annual Milken Institute Global Conference (October 12-21) is “Meeting the Moment.” We have, and must continue, to demonstrate our compassion and respond collectively as people, as nations, and as a world community. Indeed, we will all be judged by what we do to improve the lives of others during this crisis.

Since February, each of the 10 centers of the Milken Institute has intensified its expertise to address the pandemic: medical research, public health, aging populations, financial safety nets and economic recovery, and philanthropic efforts to accelerate research. Here are just a few examples:

• FasterCures’ COVID-19 Treatment and Vaccine Tracker is monitoring more than 500 potential therapies globally, and our team is working around the clock to accelerate treatments and vaccines. • Our Labor Market Explorer is tracking employment shifts in major economic sectors, offering pinpoint targets to rebuild local economies. • The Community Explorer identifies socioeconomic, demographic and health data in communities hardest hit by the pandemic, providing the ability to better link local and Federal health policies.

Our efforts continued to expand mid-year as social justice and diversity issues came to the fore and as technology accelerated dramatic economic and workforce changes. I (Mike Milken) launched a series of podcasts to share the conversations I’ve had with a wide range of industry leaders, medical experts, health providers, government officials and philanthropists around the globe so you can better understand the world’s progress.

As we open our first-ever virtual Global Conference, our objectives have not changed. More than 4,000 registered participants from more than 50 nations will access more than 100 panels and interactive discussions with 450 speakers. You’ll hear from current and past senior government officials, global Fortune 500 CEOs, scientists and digital pioneers, activists, educators, investors and philanthropists. We’ll examine trends as diverse as financial markets and basic industries; access to capital and economic opportunity; diversity, equity and inclusion; health and medical research; human capital, jobs and education; philanthropy and social impact; policy, politics and regulation; regions and developing markets; sustainability and the environment; technology and innovation, and society and culture.

For all its disruption, 2020 has been a year of new partnerships. We’ve seen unprecedented collaboration in our search for coronavirus treatments and vaccines. Governments and businesses have responded with innovation, speed and adaptability. And we’ve learned much more about each other and the crucial need to more quickly find ways to expand opportunities for all.

This year’s Global Conference will be different in obvious ways; we’ll miss the opportunity to meet in person. But it will also be very familiar. In true Institute tradition, a wide range of panels are designed for you to gain insight and focus on solutions to today’s challenges. Our speakers and researchers are prepared to offer their best ideas and supporting data. And as always, you can choose your own path and make your voice heard.

Our mission hasn’t changed, but we all have to act with a new sense of urgency. So, welcome to the Global Conference; we wish you a productive and stimulating experience.
