The Elton John Fan Club FROM THE EDITOR... s most of you will know by now, some very sad news Ahappened within the last few weeks. Gus Dudgeon, Elton’s extremely talented record producer, was tragically killed, together with his wife Sheila, in a car accident in July. In this issue of The Mag, we pay tribute to the memory of Gus by running the remainder of the exclusive interview that Gus gave to Hercules just weeks before he was killed. As members of the fan club, we are all lucky to be able to remember that Gus had a refreshing attitude towards the fans, and always made a point of being accessible to us all – he seemed to appreciate who the fans are, and how we play our part in the success of any great music artist. He attended several fan conventions and Expos over the years, and it is interesting to note that the final interview he ever gave turned out to be when he invited Hercules into his home, and spoke to the fans. Thank you all for your comments and memories of Gus – I know that a lot of you drew comfort from contacting us and each other after the shocking news. As one member said to me "We shouldn’t ever underestimate the importance of Gus in Elton’s songs – the music was created by Elton, Bernie AND Gus." We have printed a selection of your comments about Gus on page 9. After the success of the European Tour with the band in May, June and July, Elton took a well-deserved holiday in July and August, spending several weeks at his home in the South of France. The European tour included shows in Italy, France, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Austria, the UK and Ireland. An eye-witness review of every show in Europe was on the Hercules website (www.eltonfan.net) within hours of Elton coming off stage, complete with set-lists. These fan reviews will remain on the website for several months so don’t worry if you haven’t had chance to read them yet. A review of one of the UK shows in Birmingham, plus the set list, can be found on page 20. Refreshed after his holiday, Elton started work again at the end of August with a handful of shows in Canada. The next leg of the tour takes in the USA for the rescheduled Face to Face dates with Billy Joel during September and October. As mentioned in previous issues of The Mag, this is the last proper issue of the fanzine. There will be a special farewell issue in December to ensure that we go out with a bang!     ove for thought Pre - K & K Integrated Physical Activities in the Early Learning Environment M ove for Thought Pre-K & K The Move for Thought Pre-K & K (M4T pre-K & K) was developed mainly for children (3-6 years old) in the preschool environment. However, all activities are developmentally appropriate for children in kindergarten classroom. Iowa Team Nutrition and the Iowa Department of Education would like to thank you for using the M4T pre-K & K program. The M4T pre-K & K program can be used to assist in: meeting physical activity needs, improving physical literacy and fundamental gross motor skills, developing the “whole child”, by practicing physical, cognitive, social, and emotional skills. The kit was developed by Spyridoula Vazou, PhD, Department of Kinesiology, Iowa State University. The activities and supporting files were developed by Dr. Vazou and Jacqueline Krogh, M.S., Department of Human Development & Family Studies, Iowa State University. Music was developed by Elizabeth Stegemöller, PhD, Department of Kinesiology, Iowa State University. Songs were adapted from “You and Me makes We” book by Elizabeth Schwartz.     102 MTV AND TRANSATLANTIC COLD WAR MUSIC VIDEOS WILLIAM M. KNOBLAUCH INTRODUCTION In 1986 Music Television (MTV) premiered “Peace Sells”, the latest video from American metal band Megadeth. In many ways, “Peace Sells” was a standard pro- motional video, full of lip-synching and head-banging. Yet the “Peace Sells” video had political overtones. It featured footage of protestors and police in riot gear; at one point, the camera draws back to reveal a teenager watching “Peace Sells” on MTV. His father enters the room, grabs the remote and exclaims “What is this garbage you’re watching? I want to watch the news.” He changes the channel to footage of U.S. President Ronald Reagan at the 1986 nuclear arms control summit in Reykjavik, Iceland. The son, perturbed, turns to his father, replies “this is the news,” and lips the channel back. Megadeth’s song accelerates, and the video re- turns to riot footage. The song ends by repeatedly asking, “Peace sells, but who’s buying?” It was a prescient question during a 1980s in which Cold War militarism and the nuclear arms race escalated to dangerous new highs.1 In the 1980s, MTV elevated music videos to a new cultural prominence. Affirms Elton John Win In 'Nikita' Copyright Row By David McAfee Law360, New York (July 17, 2013, 4:21 PM ET) -- The Seventh Circuit on Wednesday shot down a bid by a South African lyricist to revive a copyright suit accusing Elton John of stealing the words to the song "Nikita," holding that the two songs aren't substantially similar as a matter of law. The decision comes after photojournalist and aspiring songwriter Guy Hobbs told the Seventh Circuit in March that an Illinois judge's dismissal relied on a Seventh Circuit decision that contradicted U.S. Supreme Court precedent and effectively eliminated copyright protection. Hobbs argued that Peters v. West, the 2011 Seventh Circuit ruling cited by U.S. District Judge Amy J. St. Eve in her October dismissal, defies Supreme Court precedent establishing copyright protection when an author creates an original work by arranging unprotected elements. But the three-judge appellate panel on Wednesday affirmed Judge St. Eve's decision in favor of John, his writing partner Bernie Taupin and publisher Big Pig Music, saying that Hobbs' song "Natasha" and Elton John's "Nikita" aren’t similar enough to support the copyright infringement claim. "We agree with the district court that 'Natasha' and 'Nikita' simply tell different stories, and are separated by much more than small cosmetic differences," Circuit Judge Daniel A. Manion wrote in the opinion. "We conclude that as a matter of law 'Natasha' and 'Nikita' are not substantially similar because they do not share enough unique features to give rise to a breach of the duty not to copy another's work." Hobbs, a resident of Cape Town, South Africa, brought suit in April 2012, saying he based the lyrics for the unpublished 1982 song "Natasha" on a love affair he had with a Russian waitress while working as a photographer aboard the Russian cruise ship MS Taras Shevchenko.
