Although E.L. James’ hugely successful series has inspired some couples to move beyond vanilla in the bedroom (and buy more sex toys), there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions out there about bondage, domination, submission and masochism. So we asked a few experts to help us bust commonly held stereotypes about BDSM: Myth #1: Fifty Shades of Grey was Totally the Real Deal Not even close, says veteran member of the BDSM community and sex therapist Gloria Brame, Ph.D., author of Different Loving. In fact, she says most BDSM endorsers aren’t really fans of the book. One problem she notes is that the book shows the main character practically pressured into trying it in the beginning, and that Christian is controlling in other aspects http://www.womenshealthmag.com/sex-and-relationships/bdsm-myths 1/3 12/29/2014 5 Major Myths About BDSM | Women's Health Magazine of their relationship.

  • Clinical Considerations in Treating BDSM Practitioners: a Review
JOURNAL OF SEX & MARITAL THERAPY , VOL. , NO. , – https://doi.org/./X.. Clinical Considerations in Treating BDSM Practitioners: A Review Cara R. Dunkleya andLoriA.Brottob aDepartment of Psychology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; bDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada ABSTRACT BDSM is an overlapping acronym referring to the practices of bondage and discipline, dominance and submission, and sadism and masochism. This arti- cle reviews the psychological literature on BDSM practitioners and discusses issues concerning BDSM that are relevant to clinicians and sexual health-care providers. The literature concerning the psychological health of BDSM prac- titioners and clinical issues in treating BDSM practitioners was exhaustively reviewed. BDSM practitioners differ minimally from the general population in terms of psychopathology. Six clinical considerations emerged: ignoring versus considering BDSM; countertransference; nondisclosure; cultural competence; closer relationship dynamics; BDSM, abuse, and pathology. Sexual sadism and sexual masochism describe behaviors that fall under the paraphilia umbrella and are often accepted as variations of “typical” sexual behaviors. Given the proliferation of sadomasochistic themes in sexually explicit media (Weiss, 2006a), sadomasochism may represent a more common sex- ual expression among individuals than was previously assumed (e.g., Moser & Levitt, 1987; Richters, de Visser, Rissel, Grulich, & Smith, 2008), with an estimated 10% of adults in the general population having engagedinsomeformofBDSMactivity(Moser&Kleinplatz,2006a). Light forms of sadomasochistic sexual activity, such as spanking, biting, and hair pulling, are not uncommon among individuals with more conventional sexual proclivities, with a minority of the population reporting engagement in more intense forms of sadomasochism, such as whipping, paddling, and bondage (Moser & Kleinplatz, 2006b).

  • A Comparative Study of BDSM Community Formation in Budapest and London
Reframing Exclusionary Identities Through Affective Affinities: A comparative study of BDSM community formation in Budapest and London By Heath Pennington Submitted to: Central European University Department of Gender Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Gender Studies Supervisors: Eszter Timár and Nadia Jones-Gailani CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary 2018 Abstract In this comparative thesis, I investigate how BDSM communities in Budapest and London form around affective affinities that do not rely on the exclusionary mechanisms of identity politics. I strive for an open, ambiguous definition of kink to support my framing of BDSM as an affective praxis that need not rely on normative identities. My analysis is based on 20 semi-structured interviews and a literature review drawing from sexological, psychoanalytic, gender studies, and ethnographic fields, which chronicles the historical and contemporary social construction of BDSM. Situating myself and my research locations, I discuss what it means to utilize a feminist, embodied, interdisciplinary praxis in my fieldwork. I describe my participant observation and interview methodologies, and detail the pros and cons of mobilizing the term “community” in my research. Illustrating the problem with using identity as a tool for community formation, I explore how identity creates normativities and develop the idea of kinknormativity, unique from other normativities in linking the legitimacy of informed consent to social privilege. Moving away from identity, I argue that affect provides the necessary opening for BDSM communities to form, analyzing two main affective modes: feelings of belonging and discussions of gender. I show that affective belonging is built in both locations through solidarity and educational events, which are more frequent in London than in Budapest.

  • Telepresence and the Ethics of Digital Cheating
EME 12 (1+2) pp. 7–26 Intellect Limited 2013 Explorations in Media Ecology Volume 12 Numbers 1 & 2 © 2013 Intellect Ltd Article. English language. doi: 10.1386/eme.12.1-2.7_1 Brett Lunceford Independent Scholar Telepresence and the ethics of digital cheating Abstract Keywords This article considers the ethics of sexual telepresence by tracing the history of mechan- cybersex ical and digital sex and exploring the possibilities facilitated by current and emerging digital telepresence technology. My aim is to consider how people have used technology to engage in new ethics forms of sexual expression in order to more clearly delineate exactly what consti- infidelity tutes cheating and the ethical lines surrounding such behaviours. As with non-digital intimacy forms of intimacy, it seems clear that there is a range of behaviours that invite differ- sexuality ent people to draw the lines in different places, ranging from flirtation to erotic talk, to physical contact. But the goal of this article is not merely to consider where the lines may lie, but rather to examine how the medium in which the interaction takes place invites individuals to make particular moral judgments concerning what lines should exist at all concerning both physical and emotional intimacy. Humans have likely been using tools to achieve sexual pleasure for as long as humans have used tools. Aside from some religious imperatives against masturbation, such actions are seemingly well within the realm of the ethical, especially in regard to whether such actions constitute cheating on one’s lover. However, the tools that we have crafted for sexual purposes have, like all tools, evolved considerably from the crude dildos and, of course, hands of times past.

ASSUME THE POSITION: EXPLORING DISCIPLINE RELATIONSHIPS by MELISSA TRAVIS Under the Direction of Wendy S. Simonds ABSTRACT Discipline relationships are consensual adult relationships between submissive and dominant partners who employ authority and corporal punishment. This population uses social media to discuss the private nature of their ritualized fantasies, desires, and practices. Participants of these relationships resist a sadomasochistic label of BDSM or domestic abuse. I conducted in-depth in- terviews and narrative analysis of social media to explore experiences and identities of people in discipline relationships. The sample includes social media bloggers and past and present partici- pants in discipline relationships. I compared explanations participants give for wanting and partic- ipating in discipline relationships. I combine identity theory, constructionism, post-structuralism, and critical feminism as an analytic frame to understand this practice sociologi- cally. I found gender differences in the media format and communication style of participants, but the ritualized expressions for discipline relationships remain consistent regardless of gender.

Guy Trebay. 1997. No Pain No Gain: The mainstreaming of kink. The Village Voice (New York) November 11, 1997 XLII (45): 32 ‐ 36. Kraft‐Ebbing is dead. Sade is in the ascendant. Even as the trolls of the Christian right indulge their orgies of sexual repression, there's a deliciously perverted countercurrent being swept along by the zeitgeist. The evidence of it is everywhere. But Janet Jackson's nipple ring may be a good place to start. It can't be without meaning that, when the breathy little sister of the Gloved One finally escapes the shadow of her brother's global fame and agonized gender dysphoria, it's as a woman who toys with edgy sex? ''The expression of sexual fantasies can be beautiful if there's trust, love, and understanding,'' says Jackson, unconsciously paraphrasing the s/m code of conduct‐‐''safe, sane, and consensual.'' Posing for Vibe in a nipple ring and a latex cat suit to hype her latest effort, The Velvet Rope, she boasts of her high threshold for pain and chirps that ''pushing the limits of pleasure is exciting.'' Certainly no one understood this better than Bob Flanagan, the performance artist who styled himself a ''Supermasochist.'' Before his death last year from cystic fibrosis, the 43‐year‐old artist did more than anyone since Sacher‐Masoch to uncloset the pleasures of kink. Pierced, flogged, gagged, and mummified in public‐‐usually by his life partner and collaborator Sheree Rose‐‐Flanagan found few things more pleasing than expounding on how ''hammers, clothespins, padlocks, eyebolts, thumbtacks, staple‐guns, and alligator clips'' got him erect.
