2 A Message from the FBISD Board President and Superintendent of Schools

A snapshot captures a moment in time, and we are very fortunate in Fort Bend ISD to have so many remarkable moments throughout our year to highlight. Our teachers, staff members, students and parents make up the family portrait that is FBISD, and we are so proud of their collaborative efforts!

This school year has brought many “photo opps” for our students Jim Rice and staff as they continue to achieve various local, state and Board President national accolades and recognitions. Whether it was through academics, fine arts, athletics or school organizations, these achievements help frame their educational experiences.

All of the recognitions, though, do not happen without the support of our volunteers and community partners. Their exceptional contributions as role models for our students, whether it be as mentors, speakers or classroom volunteers, are truly making a difference in students’ lives. The partnership between a school district and its community is one of the most important factors in measuring success, and we are truly thankful that our community members continue to invest so much of themselves to ensure more than 71,000 students attain the highest levels of achievement.

Throughout the coming year, we will continue to capture examples of our teachers and students as they work with and give back to our community. Please know that your partnership is invaluable to Fort Bend ISD, and we look forward to continuing to learn from you.

STEM Ready Assembly

Students welcomed area business and community leaders, who led informative presentations relating to such industries as law enforcement, engineering, medical, real estate, and government. They also enjoyed guest speakers during morning or afternoon assemblies and Career Education Fairs that featured Dulles High School interactive displays hosted by local LiveSmart students companies, FBISD Academies, high school help at career day JROTC Programs, and the Technical Education Center.

This year, FBISD approached Junior Achievement to help create a new interactive piece for Middle School Career Day to replace the Countdown to Your Future presentation. Junior Achievement worked with CenterPoint Energy volunteers and created a short DVD, Your Career, Your Future. After having watched the 15 minute movie, students then played JA’s board game, Balance, Break Even, or Broke! This proved to be a challenging and thought provoking exercise which resulted in some lively discussions.

For me personally, this program represents the realization of a dream. I have the means to enhance my instruction and the resources that will allow the Comput- er Science program to strengthen and grow.”

Schlumberger employees understand the importance of sharing their products and expertise to expose students to computer science and engineering. “It is definitely our goal to introduce concepts and partnerships that will encourage students to excel in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and continue on to STEM majors and careers,” said Paula Harris, Schlumberger’s Director of Community Affairs.

Schlumberger currently collaborates with more than 530 universities worldwide in providing this program. Clements is one of only two high schools in the world to pilot the program. Thank You, Schlumberger!

22 Summing It Up

We are overwhelmed by the generosity of our numerous partnerships and again want to emphasize the difference each volunteer makes in a child’s life. Our partnerships are invaluable. To demonstrate the monetary impact of our volunteers’ contributions, a dollar value of $12.4 million for 2013-2014 was attached to the variety of reported donations. Thank you for caring and giving so much to all of our children in Fort Bend ISD.

Business and Community Partners

Community and Business Partners Donate More Than $4.1 Million To Support Student Success Business and community partners enriched and supported student learning and achievement by serving as tutors, judges, speakers, translators and mentors. They also contributed to educational programs with in-kind donations and direct financial support. Numerous businesses rewarded student achievement through various incentive programs. Collectively, business and community partnerships accounted for more than $4.1 million in value added contributions. (Please note that these values are approximate and may not reflect the total contributions made by business and community partners.)

Volunteers In Public Schools (VIPS) Partners

VIPS Devote More Than 376,000 Volunteer Hours Volunteers In Public Schools devoted more than 376,000 recorded volunteer hours at district campuses. However, this number is an underestimated amount of real hours donated to schools, students and teachers. If you attach the rate of $22.14, a rate etablished by the Independent Sector for all the services rendered, more than $8.3 million dollars in volunteer services were donated to our district in just one year. (Please note that these hours are approximate and may not reflect the total number of hours contributed by volunteers.)

Fort Bend Education Foundation Partners

Foundation Funds Nearly $30 Million in Grants Since 1992 Each year hundreds of grant proposals are submitted to the Education Foundation. Each proposal undergoes an extensive review process. The number of grants awarded is directly dependent on the amount of money raised through the Education Foundation’s annual fundraising events. This year $350,706 was awarded to FBISD through the grants to teachers and schools program.
