SUBARU VIZIV 2 CONCEPT Press information March 2014 Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. <Concept> The “SUBARU VIZIV 2 CONCEPT” is a new crossover concept which gives a direction to take new designs and technology in order to increase the value of Subaru’s brand statement “Confidence in Motion”. The model name "VIZIV," taken from "Vision for Innovation," represents a concept car that will give direction to the Subaru brand. In keeping consistent with the first Subaru VIZIV Concept announced at last year's Geneva Motor Show, Subaru has named this production concept the VIZIV 2 Concept with strong convictions about the importance of Confidence in Motion and continuing to unwaveringly serve its customers. ・ A next generation crossover vehicle, balancing various opposing requirements—driving and environmental performance, design and utility—to let drivers feel the Confidence in Motion in all road conditions, driving environments and applications. ・ The target segment is urban families in their 30’s and 40’s who value family and personal ties and enjoy an active lifestyle. ・ The vehicle image is that of a partner to support owners with active lifestyles who live life to its fullest, going with them wherever they set off to go. <Design> ・ Subaru has dubbed the design look for the new crossover concept with dynamic and solid styling representing the value of the “Confidence in Motion” that Subaru offers its customers. ・ While inheriting shared Subaru vehicle image, the VIZIV further refines things, hinting at future Subaru designs to come. - Exterior - ・ The solid body represents polished surfaces, rigidity and density, in turn an expression of Subaru's safety and security. ・ Representative of the powerful, dynamic motif, the sides pose in a dynamic stance, coupled with strong fenders which flare out as if gushing out from the interior. ・ Beginning with the hexagonal grille, the front represents the solid feel of the design. Together with headlights which evoke images of the BOXER engine within, large circular lights serve to emphasize the image of an active crossover. ・ The core hexagonal shape of the body is repeated again in the rear. The rear combination lamps make the rear feel wider, and the strong fenders impress a sense of stability in their stance. ・ The strong fenders feature Subaru's characteristic cladding and vectoring lamps to highlight Subaru's high performance all-wheel drive. ・ Magnetite Silver Metallic is used for the exterior color. It presents an imposing presence, accentuating the solid styling. - Interior - ・ The rugged body framework has been incorporated as part of the design, creating an interior which inspires a dynamic, enjoyable driving experience. ・ The interior space encapsulates function, safety, enjoyment and an authenticity for all 2 passengers as only Subaru can. ・ From the driver’s seat, the instrument panel layout stresses drivability and operability for the driver, showing the operating status for the EyeSight, Subaru's advanced driver assistance system, and omnidirectional sensing. <Packaging> ・ A SUV-like exterior with stout wheel area that typifies the Subaru image, combined with a sporty, coupe-like cabin with four doors and seating for four. ・ The goal was an SUV crossover package with a stylish body and utility that is still comfortable enough for four adults on long trips. ・ This is a three-motor hybrid vehicle, with the front axle driven by the engine and one motor and the rear axle driven by two motors alone. A symmetrical AWD layout ensures bilateral symmetry and a low center of gravity, and the heavy battery pack is situated below the cabin for improved driving and safety performance. <Power Units> 1.6-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct injection turbo "DIT" Engine has been employed in conjunction with a hybrid system, as a proposal to the future of Subaru power units, was mounted in the SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT. The powertrain is a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 1.6-litre Subaru Boxer “DIT” engine and high-torque-compatible Lineartronic (CVT) with a front motor that provides both vehicle drive and power generation, and two independent rear motors for vehicle drive only. By achieving solid environmental and road performance with this powertrain, Subaru’s "Enjoyment and Peace of Mind" driving experience will be further advanced. The powertrain selects the best time to use each power unit according to its strengths and the driving application, achieving high fuel economy. The motors start and drive the vehicle during low-speed or city driving, while the diesel engine and high-efficiency Lineartronic take over on the highway. Its auto start stop system and multiple charging methods (engine power generation, regenerative braking and plug-in charging) also ensure more user- and environmental-friendliness. The generous amount of high torque generated by the “DIT” engine and motors in all speed ranges provides a powerful, linear acceleration feeling that rivals vehicles with large-displacement, high-power engines, and ensures road performance worthy of a Subaru. “Hybrid SI-DRIVE” system is a refined version of the “SI-DRIVE” feature of Subaru ongoing models. In addition to "Intelligent" and "Sports" modes, it has an "Eco-Cruise" mode that provides coordinated control in conjunction with the EyeSight advanced driving assistance system. Engine power and the travel conditions captured and detected by the EyeSight’s stereo camera are subjected to fine-tuned control, creating an intelligent driving feature designed for safety and environmental friendliness. <AWD (All-Wheel drive) System> For over 40 years, Subaru has pursued AWD technology designed to provide consistently safe and pleasant road performance under any travel conditions, working to refine the Subaru symmetrical AWD—an original and rational system built around a Subaru Boxer engine. SUBARU VIZIV 2 CONCEPT’s “Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD” system builds on the potential of 3 Subaru’s traditional symmetrical AWD system. It is leading the way to a future generation of Subaru AWD technology. Two drive-only motors are installed in front of the rear wheels in a laterally symmetrical layout. The system freely controls the drive power applied to the left and right rear wheels by assessing the travel conditions from the drive conditions of the four wheels, the engine torque and vehicle information from the Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC—Subaru’s vehicle stability control system). It ensures ease and confidence on the road and provides a new level of driving enjoyment. - Advanced AWD system - Coordinated management system of the front motor and other power units controls the division of drive power between the rear left and right wheels, and between the front and rear wheels. It increases Subaru’s trademark active safety performance, and is effective for improving hazard avoidance, ensuring peace of mind and confidence on the road. Turning the steering wheel increases the drive power applied to the rear, creating a handling characteristic that responds nimbly to driver operations. Turning the steering wheel back increases the drive power applied to the front, creating a handling characteristic that emphasizes stability. In stop-and-go city traffic, all wheels are driven by the motors when starting from rest, providing high starting torque and powerful acceleration, but low fuel consumption with quiet ride. The independent motor drive generates ample drive power for making turns from rest across the oncoming traffic lane or in other situations of low engine drive power. - Rear-wheel drive - By applying an approach known as “torque vectoring” that changes the vehicle’s orientation by independently controlling the drive power applied to the left and right rear wheels, the rear drive system provides more torque to the outside rear wheel and less to the inside rear wheel when cornering to generate inner-directed yaw momentum on the vehicle and achieve extremely quick and smooth "on-the-rail cornering". Besides helping acceleration and all-terrain performance, this groundbreaking AWD system also uses drive power to help turn the vehicle. Along with its thrilling handling and cornering that responds faithfully to driver operations, it also offers outstanding handling stability that ensures a high level of secure feeling and confident drive. "Four-wheel management" lies behind Subaru’s development philosophy. Subaru is constantly refining its unique AWD systems, starting in 1972 with a simple AWD that drives the four wheels and later including a cutting-edge, electronically controlled “DCCD” (Driver’s Control Centre Differential) AWD system. The independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD in the SUBARU VIZIV CONCEPT proposes a future refined version of the Subaru AWD system. It provides fine-tuned control of the four wheels to match the travel environment and road surface conditions. This groundbreaking system not only increases the all-round performance of the symmetrical AWD but also upgrades "Enjoyment and Peace of Mind" driving experience to meet customers’ highest expectations. 4 <Major Specifications> Overall Length X Width X Height (mm): 4,435 X 1,920 X 1,530 Wheelbase (mm): 2,730 Engine Type: 1.6-liter Horizontally-Opposed direct injection turbo "DIT" Engine Transmission Type: Sport Lineartronic (CVT) Electric Motor Type: Interior Permanent magnet synchronous motor; Front: 1 motor; Rear: 2 motors Battery Type: Lithium-ion batteries AWD System: Independent-rear-motor-driven symmetrical AWD Tires: 245/45 ZR20 Seating Capacity: 4 5 .
