Mit der kompakten Limousine Subaru 1000 führte der japanische Hersteller am 14. Mai 1966 seinen ersten PKW mit Boxermotor in den Markt ein. Seitdem hat Subaru über 16 Millionen Boxermotoren produziert, darunter seit 2008 auch den einzigartigen Subaru Boxer Diesel. Heute bietet der Allradspezialist ausschließlich PKW mit Boxermotoren an. Subaru hat den Boxermotor zwar nicht erfunden, aber als Shinroku Momose, Entwicklungschef bei Subaru, Mitte der 1960er Jahre dem Motoreningenieur Yoshio Akiyama den Auftrag erteilte, für den Subaru 1000 einen vibrationsarm laufenden, leichtgewichtigen und möglichst flach bauenden Motor zu konstruieren, fiel die Wahl bald auf den Boxermotor. Dessen perfekte Balance und seine laufruhige Leistungsentfaltung gaben im direkten Vergleich zu den parallel entwickelten Reihen- und V-Motoren den Ausschlag. Zwar gab es damals bereits PKW mit Boxermotor, doch eine kompakte Limousine mit wassergekühltem Boxermotor und Frontantrieb war ein Novum. Subarur erster Boxermotor vom Typ EA-52 hatte 977 cm³ Hubraum und leistete 40 kW/55 PS. Kurbelgehäuse und Zylinderköpfe des Vierzylinders waren aus Aluminium gefertigt, das damals 14-mal teurer war als konventionelles Metall. So gelang es Subaru, das Gewicht des Aggregats um über 15 Prozent zu reduzieren und das Leergewicht des 3,93 Meter langen Subaru 1000 auf unter 700 Kilogramm zu drücken. Mit einem Verbrauch von 5,0 Litern Benzin je 100 Kilometer zählte der Subaru 1000 tatsächlich zu den Effizienzmeistern seiner Zeit. In Bestform zeigte sich der erste Boxer-Pkw von Subaru auch bei der Gewichtsverteilung. Die damals noch mutige Platzierung des Motors vor dem Getriebe direkt über der angetriebenen Vorderachse bewirkte ein Gewichtsverhältnis von 6:4 und eine entsprechend gute Traktion. -
