Mit diesen Worten übergab die deutsch-jüdische Malerin Charlotte Salomon kurz vor ihrer Deportation in das Konzentrationslager Auschwitz ihr Werk „Leben? oder Theater?“ einem französischen Arzt. Dadurch wurde eine Arbeit gerettet, die in der Geschichte der Kunst einmalig ist: eine Autobiografie in 769 Gemälden mit Begleittexten, Szenenanweisungen und Hinweisen auf Musikstücke, erdacht als ein „Singspiel“. Der Tod spielte in der Familiengeschichte der Salomons eine wichtige Rolle, die Künstlerin selbst fand sich davon verfolgt. Als Tochter jüdischer Eltern 1917 in Berlin geboren, bekam Charlotte Salomon bereits im Schulalter die antisemitischen Anfeindungen in Deutschland zu spüren. Der Selbstmord ihrer Mutter 1926, die Flucht zu ihren Großeltern 1939 nach Südfrankreich und schließlich der Tod ihrer Großmutter veränderten ihr Leben nachhaltig und brachten die Künstlerin an den Rand des Wahnsinns. Erst die Wiederaufnahme ihrer malerischen Tätigkeit half der erst 23-jährigen Charlotte Salomon, das Schicksal ihrer Familie und die Erlebnisse ihres Lebens kreativ zu verwerten und durch diesen künstlerischen Umgang Distanz dazu zu gewinnen. In einer fast rauschhaften Arbeit von insgesamt zwei Jahren entstanden über 1000 kleinformatige Blätter von denen sie 769 auswählte und zu einem Zyklus von Szenen mit Begebenheiten und Erinnerungen ihres Lebens zusammenfasste. Mit „Der Tod und die Malerin“ werden nun zum ersten Mal der Biografische und der Bildnerische Teil des Werkes Charlotte Salomons in einem theatralen Gesamtkunstwerk aus Tanz, Gesang und Bild präsentiert: Bridget Breiner setzt die in Bild, Text und Musik festgehaltenen Emotionen, Ängste, Überlegungen und Hoffnungen der Künstlerin in Bewegung um. In der vielseitigen Komposition der amerikanischen Komponistin Michelle DiBucci, begleitet von einem 15-köpfigen Kammerorchester, machen die Tänzer des Ballett im Revier und 6 Sänger des Gelsenkirchener Musiktheaters den beeindruckenden, alle künstlerischen Disziplinen überspannenden Lebenskosmos Charlotte Salomons zum ersten Mal in seiner Gesamtheit fassbar. Dabei werden Bilder von Charlotte Salomon im Bühnenbild zu sehen sein und eine digitale Ausstellung im Foyer des MiR verschafft dem Publikum bereits ab drei Monaten vor der Uraufführung einen Eindruck vom bewegten Leben Charlotte Salomons und ihrer Kunst. Ab Februar 2015 wird im Kunstmuseum Bochum eine Ausstellung mit etwa 250 Originalen der Malerin zu sehen sein und auch das Ballett im Revier wird vor Ort einige Ausschnitte aus ihrem Ballett zeigen. Sie tanzte u.a. am Bayerischen Staatsballett, dem Semperoper Ballett Dresden und lange Jahre als erste Solistin für das Stuttgarter Ballett, wo sie gleichzeitig ihre Karriere als Choreografin begann. Ihre Choreografie „Sirs“ für die Stuttgarter Noverre-Gesellschaft wurde sofort ins Repertoire des Stuttgarter Ballett aufgenommen. Mit Studenten der John Cranko- Schule schuf sie im Kunstmuseum Stuttgart das Stück „Zeitsprünge“. „Letters of Others“ war 2010 ihr erstes Auftragswerk für das Stuttgarter Ballett. Es folgten Arbeiten für das Kevin O’Day-Ballett Mannheim, Ballett Augsburg oder das lettische Nationalballett. Ihr Debüt am Musiktheater im Revier feierte sie 2012 mit der Inszenierung des Opern-Tanz-Abends „Großstadt-Triptychon“. Zur Spielzeit 2012.13 übernahm Bridget Breiner die Direktion des Ballett im Revier und stellte die neue Company mit ihrer Kreation „Blau Blue Bleu“ der Öffentlichkeit vor. Ihr Ballett „Ruß“ wurde im Herbst 2013 mit dem Deutschen Theaterpreis „Faust“ ausgezeichnet. Die Spielzeit 13.14 eröffnete sie mit ihrer Interpretation von Tschaikowskys „Schwanensee“ und lieferte die Choreografie zu Bernsteins Musical „On the Town“. In dieser Saison choreografiert und inszeniert sie die Uraufführung der Ballettoper „Charlotte Salomon: Der Tod und die Malerin“. In „Giselle“ tanzt Bridget Breiner die Titelpartie als auch die Rolle der Bathilde. »Michelle DiBucci – Komposition Michelle DiBucci ist eine international beachtete amerikanische Komponistin, deren Werke für Theater, Oper, Tanz und Film verschiedenste Genres und Medien nahtlos miteinander verknüpfen. Ihre künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt sie an der Carnegie Mellon University und der Julliard School. Im Alter von 23 Jahren debütierte sie als Komponistin in New York mit dem Brooklyn Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra in einer Reihe namens „Meet the Moderns“. Nach Beendigung ihres Studiums gründete sie das ConcerTheatre, ein Ensemble von 50 Musikern, Sängern, Schauspielern, Regisseuren und Ausstattern. Diese Kooperation ermöglichte ihr die Komposition und Produktion vier eigener Musiktheater-Werke, die 1987 in ihrer Heimat Pittsburgh Premiere feierten. Viele Kompositionen Michelle DiBuccis entstanden in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Regisseuren lateinamerikanischer Herkunft, so u.a. „Grail: Portrait of Faust as a Young Man“, „The Lorca Project“, „Nowhere Man“, „Chief Butterknife“, „Fausto“, PRESSEINFORMATIONEN BALLETT IM REVIER „Philoctetes“ oder „Biederman’s Match“ nach Max Frischs „Biedermann und die Brandstifter“. Sie komponierte auch diverse Partituren für Filme wie „Wendigo“ (Regie: Larry Fessenden) oder „Forgiveness“ (Regie: Helen Whitney). Regelmäßig arbeitet Michelle DiBucci für Tanzensembles wie die New Yorker Company Pilobolus, die 2014 ihr Werk „On the Nature of Things“ vertanzte. Für das Ballett im Revier komponiert sie in dieser Spielzeit die Uraufführung “Chorlatte Salomon – Der Tod und die Malerin”. »Valtteri Rauhalammi – Musikalische Leitung Der finnische Dirigent Valtteri Rauhalammi erhielt seine künstlerische Ausbildung an der Sibelius Akademie in Helsinki der Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Wien. Die klassische Kapellmeisterlaufbahn führte ihn über Pforzheim und Aachen nach Trier, wo er vier Jahre lang 1. Kapellmeister war. Dort dirigierte er die Premieren von „Don Giovanni“, „Lucia di Lammermoor“, „Der Freischütz“ und die Deutsche Erstaufführung von Philip Glass‘ Oper „The Voyage“. Neben eigenen Einstudierungen und Repertoirevorstellungen (u. a. „Hoffmanns Erzählungen“, „Lakmé“ von Leo Delibes, „Il barbiere di Siviglia“ und „La Bohème“) dirigierte er in Trier Sinfoniekonzerte, Konzerte der Reihe „Klassik um 11“, und Filmkonzerte mit Live-Begleitung zu Stummfilmen von Charlie Chaplin. Valtteri Rauhalammi gastierte im Staatstheater Oldenburg („Tosca“), im Theater Lübeck („Hänsel und Gretel“) und im Theater Bielefeld („Die schöne Helena“). 2012 debütierte er am Musiktheater im Revier Gelsenkirchen mit „La Traviata“ und leitete seitdem als 1. Kapellmeister „Le Nozze di Figaro“ und „Il barbiere di Siviglia“, „Der Rosenkavalier“, „L‘italiana in Algeri“, „Don Quichotte“, „La Bohème“ und „Albert Herring“. In dieser Spielzeit übernimmt Valtteri Rauhalammi die Musikalische Leitung für die Uraufführungen „Simon das Findelkind“ und „Charlotte Salomon“ und „Giselle“. »Jürgen Kirner – Ausstattung Der freie Bühnen- und Kostümbildner lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Er studierte Visuelle Kommunikation und Bühnenbild in Kassel, Hamburg und Berlin und arbeitete als Assistent u.a. von Robert Wilson. Seit 1999 ist er als Ausstatter im Schauspiel-, Musiktheater-, Performance- und Tanzbereich tätig. Seine Arbeiten PRESSEINFORMATIONEN BALLETT IM REVIER führten ihn an das Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus, die Stadshouwburg Antwerpen, die Staatstheater Meiningen und Cottbus, das Landestheater Salzburg und die Theater Erfurt und Bern. Für den Regisseur Aron Stiehl schuf er Bühnen- und Kostümbilder, u.a. für die Opern-Uraufführung „Medusa“ an der Bayerischen Staatsoper München, „Il Mondo della Luna“ am Theater St. Gallen sowie für die „Entführung aus dem Serail“ mit Zubin Mehta und dem Israelic Philharmonic Orchestra in Tel Aviv. Zuletzt stattete er Opernproduktionen von „La Bohème“, „Tosca“ und „Madama Butterfly“ aus, sowie 2010 das Ballett „Letters of Others“ in der Choreographie von Bridget Breiner mit dem Stuttgarter Ballett. 2012 folgte ein Tanzabend mit Pergolesis „Stabat Mater“ am Theater Thikwa Berlin, inszeniert von Alessio Trevisani.
