Only moments before the engine burbled I was saying how we would be #$@^% out of luck with an engine failure, as I marveled at the sheer cliffs of the Rockies below us. Upon my return, I immediately started IFR training and received my instrument ticket in June 2000. Getting the instrument rating was my second smartest decision in aviation, right after

6 • Comanche Flyer MARCH 2015 Before heading to the paint shop I went gung ho on Aveo LED lights. My mechanic was raving about them and this new company. It started with wingtip nav/strobe/position lights, one rear position light, and replacing the rotating beacon. It took the shop 40 hours to run the strobe wires to both wing tips for the new lights! An inter- esting fact is that these lights come in TSO’d and non-TSO’d versions. Since the Comanche was not on the list at that time we were able to use the non- TSO’d version at a big cost savings. My understanding is some FSDOs on the west coast require using the TSO’d version. When I learned that Ralph, the examiner at our local FSDO that signed off on the job, was soon retiring I hurriedly had my shop replace the belly strobe making the entire exterior lighting all LED. If you need a copy of the 337, please contact me.

I have heard horror stories of shops that take deposits then take forever to finish, ask for more money, and on and on. Essentially those shops are operating a Ponzi scheme. Not the case with DESAPI, this is a shop you can trust to deliver. From its long military background/retired air traf- range, speed, load carrying capability, fic controller, of my photo shoot for stability in IMC, to getting us out of the the cover shot he immediately told me (continued on page 11) I needed to use Dick James, a fellow pilot and EAA guy that made his career as a photographer. My other neighbor Pat offered his Lance for the photo plane. With Pat’s back door off and John flying the right seat of N143VP (he has more right seat time than left seat), we moved into formation. Pat flew lead and with Dick’s instructions we followed, essentially posing the Comanche for Dick. Using his 24 to 70mm zoom lens, Dick shot away while John maintained 60- to 100-foot sepa- ration between wingtips (plus some vertical separation … thank goodness). At one point John asked me if I wanted to fly and my response was “No way, this is way too close for me, I will leave it to your expertise.” Plus it was bumpy that day which added another challenging dimension. N143VP has changed home bases several times since I purchased her back in 1999. From Cortland, NY to Rochester, NY, and as of July 2004 she lives in our backyard hangar at the Lake Norman Airpark in Mooresville, NC. Living in an airpark is a true blessing
