Received 14 June, 2017; Accepted 6 July, 2017 Fast foods companies in Zimbabwe have been outcompeting and outclassing each other in using celebrity endorsers for their marketing communications. The study aimed to investigate the impact of celebrity endorsement on consumer purchase intentions. The study’s literature review was based on a copious of celebrity endorsement empirical and theoretical literature. The literature review also acted as bedrock for the research methodology which was later adopted. In order to achieve the research objectives, the study was largely quantitative where survey questionnaires were distributed to customers and these questionnaires were useful in the aggregation of the results. The findings were entered into SPSS software package version 22. The result shows that celebrity endorsement variables showed a positive and significant statistical relationship with consumer buying intentions. The study recommends for fast foods companies to gauge the capacity of celebrities to project multi-attributes which would be consistent and of interest to the consumer’s requirements. There is also the need to strengthen certain aspects of celebrity consumer relationship as way of understanding the implications for product endorsement in the fast foods industry.

Focusing on the metropolitan provinces of Gauteng and Harare respectively, I use the study to interrogate how popular expressions of African nationalism have emerged and evolved in the neighboring nations during their anti-colonial/anti-apartheid struggles throughout the 20 th century, and how they exist today. Presenting a thesis that I call nationalisms from below, the research study reveals how these manifestations of nationalism are imagined, practiced, and represente d by the initiatives and actions of different members of the civil society including artists, activists, laborers, and migrants in the two countries’ contemporary politics and society. My findings lead to a nuanced determination of the factors that influence the intersections, divergences, and convergences of what I refer to in the study as Africa’s tripartite nationalist expressions and identities—ethnicism, African Nationalism, and Pan- Africanism.

    22 GUKURAHUNDI IN RETROSPECT: THEATRE PERFORMANCE AS A CULTURAL PUBLIC SPHERE Nkululeko Sibanda1 https://orcid.org/0000-0002-2950-7767 Abstract Resistance during Gukurahundi was virtually impossible especially in holding camps such as Bhalagwe and Matopo. Gukurahundi refers to the 1983-1987 period in Zimbabwean history characterised by an unconfirmed genocide of the Ndebele minority. Upon the deployment of the 5th Brigade in Matabeleland and some parts of Midlands, the government of the day closed off media access to these areas, banning access to journalists without formal permission. While some survivors of the holding camps and Gukurahundi brutality have over the years shared their experiences with family members, some have chosen to remain quiet. Out of the firsthand narratives from Gukurahundi emerging through various platforms, an ‘alternative’ narrative is beginning to infect public opinion and discourse. It is considered ‘alternative’ because it contests the official ‘moment of madness’ (GAIDZANWA, 2015) government meta-narrative. In this article, I examine Victory Siyanqoba’s Talitha Koum-Someone Lied! (here in after referred to as Talita Koum) as one instance of a cultural public sphere’s ability to give a voice to those who have lost theirs such as the survivors and their children in a manner that unsettles the past, bringing alternative narratives to the public and instigating debates and discourses around Gukurahundi.     ZIMBABWEAN VIDEO FILMS AS ALTERNATIVE CINEMA BY PEACE MUKWARA A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE ARTS, UNIVERSITY OF ZIMBABWE, IN FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY DEGREE SUPERVISOR: PROFESSOR N MBOTI DR K CHIKONZO UNIVERSITY OF ZIMBABWE OCTOBER 2015 1 | P a g e Abstract This study examines the filmmaking practices of selected Zimbabwean video filmmakers across the filmmaking value chain in order to explore how they ‘negotiate’, ‘appropriate’, ‘contaminate’ and ‘violate’ mainstream conventional filmmaking modes. The analysis contextualizes conditions of production from concept to exhibition. Evidence is that filmmaking choices are framed as much by the aesthetics of filmmaking as by the resources that are available. Filmmaking and distribution occur mostly under the radar. The video filmmaker is a hybrid between a “guerilla” and a “hustler” who has adapted his/her means to create a “shoe-string” alternative cinematic practice. The study began with a historical outline of post-colonial film practice and how this did not allow a conducive environment for alternative ‘indigenous’ cinematic practice. It then proceeded to examine the nature of video film practice and its efficacy. The nature of video film practice was examined from concept to exhibition in terms of how video filmmakers navigate their way through the limitations of their resources-in the process creating an alternative cinematic movement. The study concluded by analyzing how the language and aesthetic orientation of the films constitute a hybrid alternative cinematic praxis. Through the lens of Hybridity and Third Cinema theories the researcher argues that as a new form of cultural expression, video film is Zimbabwe’s new ‘Alternative Cinema’ invented by innovative Zimbabweans in remapping the turbulent contours of a troubled post-colony.

Historian Mhoze Chikowero identifies a particular scarcity narrative that is rooted in colonial sound archives and permeates current scholarship on African music (2015). His research, along with works by Andrew Mark (2017), shows how this scarcity narrative depicts Zimbabwean music in a state of constant decline and in need of “rescuing” by foreign NGOs and academics, thereby perpetuating foreign control over indigenous cultural property. In this dissertation I respond to Chikowero and Mark’s critical analyses of the scarcity narrative through a case study of matepe, a marginalized music tradition from the northeastern borderlands of Zimbabwe and central Mozambique. I provide a nuanced historical account of matepe music cultures that centers localized understandings of music sustainability and cultural adaptation based on archival, ethnographic, and applied methodologies. The main framework of this dissertation is based on the Nyahuna prophecy, a locally- specific prediction of cultural decline and recovery in northeastern Zimbabwe that was delivered by Nyahuna, a prominent mhondoro (clan) spirit of the Marembe people in 1958.
