Short Synopsis After a single-mother (Carice van Houten) witnesses terrifying symptoms of demonic possession in her 11-year-old son (David Mazouz), a Vatican representative (Catalina Sandino Moreno) calls on wheelchair-bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to rid him of the evil spirit. Driven by a personal agenda rooted in his own tragic past, Ember enters the boy’s unconscious mind where he confronts a demon as ferocious as it is ingenious. Long Synopsis Eleven-year-old Cameron (David Mazouz) alarms his single mother Lindsay (Carice van Houten) when he begins isolating himself on the floor of his dark room, speaking in ancient languages and displaying other symptoms of demonic possession. Alerted to the situation, Vatican representative Camilla (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recruits wheelchair- bound scientist Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart) to extract the evil spirit from the boy. A non-believer who drinks, smokes and prefers to think of his work as “eviction” rather than exorcism, Ember sets up shop with high-tech assistants Riley (Emily Jackson) and Oliver (Keir O’Donnell). Strapped into a life-support system, he enters Cameron’s subconscious mind, where the demon holds the boy captive in an imaginary dream world by appealing to his deepest desire: to be reunited with his estranged father Dan (Matt Nable). Driven by tragic events in his own traumatic past, Ember engages in a fierce battle with the crafty spirit. Ever mindful that the demon, known as “Maggie,” travels from one victim to the next through physical contact, Ember knows that his desperate attempt to save Cameron’s soul could make him the demon’s next host.

  • From Shadow Citizens to Teflon Stars
From shadow citizens to teflon stars cultural responses to the digital actor L i s a B o d e A thesis submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2004 School of Theatre, Film and Dance University of New South Wales Abstract This thesis examines an intermittent uncanniness that emerges in cultural responses to new image technologies, most recently in some impressions of the digital actor. The history of image technologies is punctuated by moments of fleeting strangeness: from Maxim Gorky’s reading of the cinematographic image in terms of “cursed grey shadows,” to recent renderings of the computer-generated cast of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within as silicon-skinned mannequins. It is not merely the image’s unfamiliar and new aesthetics that render it uncanny. Rather, the image is received within a cultural framework where its perceived strangeness speaks allegorically of what it means to be human at that historical moment. In various ways Walter Benjamin, Anson Rabinbach and N. Katherine Hayles have claimed that the notion and the experience of “being human” is continuously transformed through processes related to different stages of modernity including rational thought, industrialisation, urbanisation, media and technology. In elaborating this argument, each of the four chapters is organized around the elucidation of a particular motif: “dummy,” “siren,” “doppelgänger” and “resurrection.” These motifs circulate through discourses on different categories of digital actor, from those conceived without physical referents to those that are created as digital likenesses of living or dead celebrities. These cultural responses suggest that even while writers on the digital actor are speculating about the future, they are engaging with ideas about life, death and identity that are very old and very ambivalent.

  • “China Factor” in Contemporary Hong Kong Genre Cinema
Concentric: Literary and Cultural Studies 46.1 March 2020: 11-37 DOI: 10.6240/concentric.lit.202003_46(1).0002 Re-Negotiations of the “China Factor” in Contemporary Hong Kong Genre Cinema Ting-Ying Lin Department of Information and Communication Tamkang University, Taiwan Abstract Given the long-existing and multifaceted negotiations of the “China factor” in Hong Kong film history, this article centers on the political function of genre films by exploring how contemporary Hong Kong filmmakers utilize filmmaking as a flexible strategy to re-negotiate and reflect on the China factor concerning current post-handover political dynamics. By focusing on several recent Hong Kong genre films as case studies, it examines how the China factor is negotiated in Vulgaria (低俗喜劇 Disu xiju, 2012) and The Midnight After (那夜凌晨,我坐上了旺角開往大埔的紅 VAN Naye lingchen, wo zuoshang le Wangjiao kaiwang Dapu de hong van, 2014), considering the politics of languages alongside the imaginary of the disappearance of Hong Kong’s local cultures in the post-handover era. It also highlights two post-Umbrella- Revolution films, Trivisa ( 樹大招風 Shuda zhaofeng, 2016) and The Mobfathers (選老頂 Xuan lao ding, 2016), to explore how the China factor is negotiated in light of the collective anxieties of Hongkongers regarding the handover and controversies in the current electoral system of Hong Kong. By doing so, this article argues that the re-negotiations of the China factor in contemporary Hong Kong genre cinema have become more and more politically reflexive given the increasingly severe political interference of the Beijing sovereignty that has violated the autonomy of Hong Kong, while forming a discourse of resistance of Hongkongers against possible neo- colonialism from the Chinese authorities in the postcolonial city.

How Satyajit Ray’s Kanchenjungha Inspired Me to Make My Own Mountain Movie Writer-director Ira Sachs on the underappreciated Indian classic which sparked the idea for his forthcoming film, Frankie. By Ira Sachs | Talkhouse, September 10, 2019 Sometimes a movie won’t let you go. In April of 2009, I first saw Satyajit Ray’s Kanchenjungha as part of a week-long retrospective of his films at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Released in 1962, and Ray’s first color film, it tells the story of a wealthy Bengali family on a vacation in a Himalayan mountain resort and takes place in the course off one single day – almost as if in real time – from morning to late afternoon. The narrative weaves together the stories of nine different characters but is built around one central marriage plot: will the single daughter in the family marry the right or the wrong suitor? The movie drifts gracefully between the different characters, not unlike the clouds that cover the mountaintop that the family patriarch is hoping to get a glimpse of before the day, and the film, is over. Nothing happens, and everything seems to happen, and by the final moment of the film, as the clouds part, and the white peaks of Kanchengjungha are revealed to the cinema audience alone (the characters in the film are too busy to notice), Ray has created one of his most indelible works. At the time of its release in the U.S., four years after its premiere, Kanchenjungha was received coolly by the critics.
