“The House That Love Built” “The House That Love Built” RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE CHARITIES WESTERN WASHINGTON & ALASKA The 28th Annual RMHC Gala benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities® Western Washington & Alaska October 8, 2016 Sheraton Seattle Hotel Honorary Chair Todd Korman Todd Korman is the CEO and President for Metropolitan Market, a regional chain of upscale grocery stores in greater Puget Sound. Todd started with Metropolitan Market in 2002 as the Company’s Chief Financial Officer. He was promoted to Chief Operating Officer in 2007, then to President and Co-CEO in 2013 and finally CEO and President in 2016. Prior to his tenure with Metropolitan Market, Todd served as General Manager at Meyers Distributing from 1996-1999 and has held several positions in the investment banking industry with a primary focus in private mergers and acquisitions. Todd earned his MBA from the University of Washington and a Bachelor of Science in Business at the University of Virginia. He serves on the Board of Directors for Washington Food Industry and was previously a director for Food Lifeline. Todd takes an active role in coaching youth sports and enjoys golf, skiing, basketball and travel. Welcome! Thank you for being with us at the 28th Annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Gala. I am really excited to join you tonight as the honorary chair for this amazing event. We’ve come together tonight to celebrate a wonderful organization in our community that makes such a difference for families when they need it most. The Seattle Ronald McDonald House is home to 500 families a year who come to Seattle so that their children are able to receive the medical care they need. These families face so many challenges when they arrive -- a child fighting a potentially life-threatening diagnosis, being away from family and friends, mounting financial worries and the need to keep the family strong and together through a tough time. Each one of these families, once they walk through the doors of our Ronald McDonald House, have an immediate support group and a clean, safe place to call home for as long as they need it. That makes me very proud of our Seattle community! At Metropolitan Market, making contributions to our community is core to our mission and guiding principles. Our Sand Point store developed a great partnership with the Seattle Ronald McDonald House when we opened our doors in 2003, and we are very proud of the relationship and community support we have developed over the last 13 years. We contribute annual funds for the House, our team members volunteer through the year and we see the Ronald McDonald house families every day in the store. This partnership has been a very special part of the culture and experience at our Sand Point store. I am so honored to be here tonight, joining all of you to make sure that our Ronald McDonald House is well supported by the community for the children and families they serve. I hope that you will enjoy your evening and that you will be generous in your participation. Thank you for your support not only tonight, but also throughout the year. Todd Korman CEO and President Metropolitan Market Western Washington McDonald’s thanks you for your years of gracious support. With every Happy Meal®, Mighty Kids Meal®, or French Fries sold, we’ll donate a portion of the proceeds to RMHC. Together, with your donations to the GIVE-A-HAND® fundraiser and our in-store donation boxes, we’re keeping The House That Love Built™ stronger than ever. Your support is directed specifically toward need-based financial aid. We all benefit by ensuring that Providence is financially accessible to a wide group of families, and your contribution to this effort is much appreciated. This year’s auction theme, “Awakening Wonder,” resonates with classical, Christian education. A primary goal at Providence is to encourage and inspire students to think beyond themselves, to marvel at not only God’s creation, but to marvel at the holiness of God. All of learning culminates in a person: Jesus Christ. In Him all things cohere (Colossians 1:17); In Him we find truth and a path to the Father (John 14:6); in Him we live, and move, and have our being (Acts 17:28). To awaken wonder is to teach in a way that allows the student to see God’s truth in all reality, to see beyond the material, and to meditate on the higher things.

Edible City: A Delicious Journey, organized by Seattle’s Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) and on view Nov 19, 2016 – Sept 10, 2017, serves up the story of how Seattleites eat in their city and how urban palates have developed over the years. • The Best of Seattle
03 541277 Ch01.qxd 11/17/03 9:37 AM Page 3 1 The Best of Seattle Imagine yourself sitting in a park on the Seattle waterfront, a double-tall latte and an almond croissant close at hand. The snowy peaks of the Olympic Moun- tains are shimmering on the far side of Puget Sound, and the ferryboats are com- ing and going across Elliott Bay. It’s a summer day, and the sun is shining. (Hey, as long as we’re dreaming, why not dream big?) It just doesn’t get much better than this, unless of course you swap the latte for a microbrew and catch a 9:30 summer sunset. No wonder people love this town so much. Okay, so the waterfront is as touristy as San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, but what a view! Seattle is a city of views, and the must-see vista is, of course, the panorama from the top of the Space Needle. With the 21st century in full swing, this image of the future looks decidedly mid-20th-century modern, but still, it’s hard to resist an expensive elevator ride in any city. And you can even take a monorail straight out of The Jetsons to get there (and pass right through the Frank Gehry–designed Experience Music Project en route). EMP, as the Experience Music Project has come to be known, is one of Seat- tle’s latest architectural oddities. Its swooping, multicolored, metal-skinned bulk rises at the foot of the Space Needle, proof that real 21st-century architecture looks nothing like the vision of the future people dreamed of when the Space Needle was built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair.
