“The House That Love Built” “The House That Love Built” The 29th Annual RMHC Gala benefiting Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Western Washington & Alaska October 14, 2017 Sheraton Seattle Hotel Honorary Chairs Manny Chao and Roger Bialous Manny Chao and Roger Bialous are the founders and owners of Georgetown Brewing Company. Since 2002, they have been brewing some of the darn tastiest beer in the Pacific Northwest. Up until May of 2017 they were draft only, making Georgetown the largest draft only brewery in the US. They now produce several beers in cans, which are available in the back of the ballroom courtesy of Georgetown Brewing! In addition to being purveyors of a fine product, Manny and Roger are also incredible philanthropists, giving to a multitude of worthy causes. RMHC is near and dear to their hearts, and since 2006 they have been brewing a specialty beer called Bob’s Brown Ale, which is named after Bob Hirsch, a former Ronald McDonald House resident. The beer honors and celebrates Bob, and is released in a limited quantity on Bob’s birthday, May 14th. All proceeds from Bob’s Brown Ale benefit Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Western Washington & Alaska. So far, the campaign has raised more than $800,000 for the House. Welcome! Thank you for being with us at the 29th annual Ronald McDonald House Charities Gala. We are really excited to join you tonight as the honorary chairs for this amazing event. Ronald McDonald House Charities has been close to our hearts at Georgetown for the past 12 years and we’re proud of our partnership. Tonight we’ve come together to not only celebrate a great organization in our community that makes such a difference for families when they need it most, but to make sure that they have the support they need from all of us to take care of the families who need it the most. Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a home to over 1,000 fami- lies a year who have to come to Seattle or Anchorage so that their children are able to receive the medical care they need. These families face so many challenges when they arrive -- a child fighting a potentially life-threatening diagnosis, being away from family and friends, mounting financial wor- ries and the need to keep the family strong and together through a tough time. Each one of these families, once they walk through the doors of one of our Ronald McDonald Houses, has an immediate support group and a clean, safe place to call home for as long as they need it. That makes us very proud to be a part of such important work. At Georgetown, making contributions to our community is just as im- portant as making great beer. We’ve sponsored an annual fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House Charities for the past 12 years and it’s become a special part of our culture. Our team is very proud of our support of seriously ill children and their families. We are very honored to be here tonight, joining all of you to make sure that Ronald McDonald House Charities is well supported by the community for the children and fami- lies they serve. We hope that you enjoy your evening and that you will be generous in your participation. Thank you for your support not only tonight, but also throughout the year. Manny and Roger Georgetown Brewing for 2017 Fred Schultz Honoree Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Western Washington & Alaska is privileged to honor Columbia Distributing as the 2017 Fred Schultz Honoree. Columbia Distributing has supported RMHC since 2006 by partnering with Georgetown Brewing to host the annual Bob’s Brown Ale fundraiser. For the past five years they have also held an annual golf tournament fundraiser to further support RMHC and have cooked dinners for families at the Seattle House. We are very grateful to Columbia Distributing for their long standing support and commitment to Ronald McDonald House Charities and the families who need our support. The Fred Shultz Honoree program was established in the name of former board member and long-time friend of the House, Fred Schultz. Previous honorees include Symetra, Georgetown Brewing Company, Report Footwear, Eleanor Garrison, The Seattle Thunderbirds, and more. ® Evening Schedule Auctioneer Jeff Randall Emcees Ashley and Allan from WARM 106.9 5:30 p.m. Registration, Cocktail Reception Silent Auction and Raffle Sponsored by Wine Toss Sponsored by 7:00 p.m. Silent Auction and Wine Ring Toss Close 7:20 p.m. Raffle Drawing and Opening Remarks 7:30 p.m. Dinner and Live Auction Late Night DJ and Dancing The John L. • Seattle a Digital Community Still in Transition Jessica Durkin, Tom Glaisyer, and Kara Hadge, Media Policy Initiative June 2010, Release 2.0
New America Foundation An Information Community Case Study: Seattle A digital community still in transition Jessica Durkin, Tom Glaisyer, and Kara Hadge, Media Policy Initiative June 2010, Release 2.0 Seattle, Washington, could be considered a city singularly suited to develop a healthy democracy in the digital age. The city government, citizens and business have created a productive environment for the next generation of information-sharing and community engagement. Years of economic growth and relative prosperity have fostered new, superior practices in news and information. Yet, losing a major print newspaper, as Seattle did when The Seattle Post-Intelligencer closed, adversely affects a community, by leaving it with one less place to provide public service journalism, stories about people and general community updates. In parallel, Seattle has been at the center of an explosion of alternative news outlets, especially online, which has created a critical mass of information portals for geographic and social communities. As the Knight Report, Informing Communities: Sustaining Democracy in a Digital Age, highlights, it is important to understand that there are three important elements to be considered as we analyze media and democracy in the 21st century: • availability of relevant and credible information to all Americans and their communities; • capacity of individuals to engage with information; and • individual engagement with information and the public life of the community. However, despite the relative vibrancy of the media scene, and even with all its demographic and other advantages, it is unclear how much of this innovation is sustainable. The local web is littered with websites that are no longer updated, and few of the startups boast anything like the journalistic firepower or profitability of the papers of the past.
