Nailsworth has a new Ambassador! “I’m Elsie Heslop. I am 13 years old and I am a pupil at Sir William Romney’s school in Tetbury. This year I have again been lucky enough to be selected as the school’s ambassador for Forest Green Rovers. My role as an Ambassador is to help promote the local football club both within the school and also the local community. I like to do reports on matches and the Club and inform my friends about what is going on. I was an ambassador last season and was lucky enough to be voted runner up for ‘Secondary School Ambassador of the Year’ and as a result of that, I have been lucky to be chosen again to carry on my role throughout this season. My reports will be about various things at the Club and emembering young lives lost too regular updates about FGR and ‘Rsoon’ is the theme behind a stunning what they’re doing. Hopefully sculpture recently unveiled in Cossack Square. you will enjoy my reports!” Elsie will be writing every two Please turn to page 4 for details of the months or so for the NN and we poignant, yet inspirational and beautiful are delighted welcome her on tribute to Jinny-Mae Cook. board!

Jinny-Mae Cook (18) worked at Claire Frances Hair Design until November 2014 when she was tragically killed in a car crash. Claire Uzzell and her staff at the salon wanted very much to remember and honour Jinny-Mae and all others who die so young and to have something erected where people can sit, look and think of positive things about those who we have lost in their tender years. Kim Frances created the sculpture and Claire and her staff raised the £6,000 needed with charity walks and mountain hiking, fashion shows, raffle prizes and more. “The concept of this piece is based on the feelings of uplifting and releasing … people may see two sets of hands, a pair of wings and the setting free of doves, of siblings, of loved ones. It is a positive sculpture to bring hope and promise and to allow us to ponder and remember,” says Claire. There are many locals who helped so much in this project and Claire and her team are so very grateful. Beaudesert Park School is starting another academic year with a spring in its step and a bumper number of pupils on the register. The last school year was especially action-packed, and culminated in Year 8 children achieving the school’s best ever exam results in the 13+ common entrance exam which helps them pinpoint their future senior schools. Back at base the new Performing Arts Centre resonated with the sound of performances, lessons and events, on a daily, sometimes hourly basis, and a new library has been built complete with ‘reading tunnels’ and giant beanbags. In sport, pupils continued to thrive on the school’s ‘sport for all’ approach, and also achieved some fantastic NAILSWORTH national success including two golds in the National Prep Schools Athletic Championships. 17 Community George Wilcox has just celebrated his 100th birthday and the Nailsworth Mills Bowling Club honoured the occasion with a triple Bowls match between members of NMBC and other local clubs. This was followed by a sumptuous buffet supper with a magnificent cupcake birthday cake just to finish things off! George came to Nailsworth in the early 1980s - he vaguely knew of the area after narrowly missing Haresfield Church in 1940 when on a training flight in his Blenheim bomber. Severe burns, a time in Gloucester Hospital and then a survivor of the ‘D’ Day Landings in 1944, George helped build advanced landing strips for the Allies as their armies marched east to Berlin. In time, after the War and his playing of bowls in Middlesex, he joined NMBC in 1985 and was its Treasurer from 1987 to 1991. He was a regular winner of Club competitions and has still been very active in the NMBC League teams and in other matches. In the winter he has run an indoor Bowls team at the Cotswold Indoor Bowls Club. To chat to George is a real privilege, not just about his War experiences (of which there are many) but also of times past both here and further afield, and he looks no older than 70. Remarkable!
