Now, more than ever, people look to the BBC for wholly reliable information, for an expression of the innumerable concerns of the nation, and especially perhaps, for laughter and pleasure in every home. Our programmes, we hope, help to sustain the national morale, not by pumping out propaganda, or by concealing the truth about the dark sides of national life, but by broad- casting the best we can of those things that our Royal Charter enjoins us to provide - information, entertainment and education. When the whole future of broadcasting, and hence the BBC, is under review by a committee of inquiry with very wide terms of reference, I believe it is wise to remember the value of what we do at present, and the good work that we have put out, in spite of great difficulties, throughout the last year. I want also to spell out once again our continuing aim and purpose. Reviewed by David Simonelli (Youngstown State University) Published on H-Albion (January, 2011) Commissioned by Thomas Hajkowski David Hendy’s introduction opens with a pair of extreme vignettes that aptly capture the nature of the Radio Four audience. In May 1988, an elderly woman strode into Broadcasting House and opened fire with a pistol full of blanks when she could not receive Radio Four in Blackpool; more tragically, a vicar in Surrey beat his wife to death with his radio when he objected to someone’s musical tastes as broadcast on the program Desert Island Discs. As a loyal National Public Radio (NPR) listener, one sniffs at the idea that NPR could elicit the same response, no matter how demented the listener might be. To my knowledge, there is no true equivalent in any other Western nation-state’s culture to match the role that Radio Four plays in Britain. The founder of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), Sir John Reith, declared that the entire service had a mission “to inform, to educate, and to entertain” (p. 400). In post-Victorian terms, Reith’s idea was to improve people through listening and get them to like the effort. While other branches of BBC radio and television have drifted off to serve each single aspect of that mandate, only Radio Four has kept a true balance between information, education, and entertainment.

Skinner, Advisor Danielle Fosler-Lussier Barry Shank 1 Copyrighted by Matthew Alan Campbell 2019 2 Abstract For members of the United States Armed Forces, communicating with one’s loved ones has taken many forms, employing every available medium from the telegraph to Twitter. My project examines one particular mode of exchange—“audio letters”—during one of the US military’s most trying and traumatic periods, the Vietnam War. By making possible the transmission of the embodied voice, experiential soundscapes, and personalized popular culture to zones generally restricted to purely written or typed correspondence, these recordings enabled forms of romantic, platonic, and familial intimacy beyond that of the written word. More specifically, I will examine the impact of war and its sustained separations on the creative and improvisational use of prosthetic culture, technologies that allow human beings to extend and manipulate aspects of their person beyond their own bodies. Reel-to-reel was part of a constellation of amateur recording technologies, including Super 8mm film, Polaroid photography, and the Kodak slide carousel, which, for the first time, allowed average Americans the ability to capture, reify, and share their life experiences in multiple modalities, resulting in the construction of a set of media-inflected subjectivities (at home) and intimate intersubjectivities developed across spatiotemporal divides.
