Among these peers, UNL has many strengths and unique attributes that set it apart. Plan Big seeks to embody UNL’s strengths and unique attributes in an identity that is expressed in the physical environment through campus design and landscape. UNL is the westernmost member of the Big Ten, which impacts the university’s landscape and image. As one moves from the eastern U.S. toward UNL’s central location, there are decreasing precipitation rates, de- creasing tree canopy, and increasing predicted droughts. These conditions contribute to a landscape character at UNL that is respectful of its climate. They also influence research trajectories, such as the Water for Food Institute. Opened in 1917, the UNL Dairy Store on East Campus is a popular destination for students, faculty, staff and community members alike. They serve handmade ice creams, cheeses and meats made by UNL students in their on-site plant. Well worth the visit! (You’ll get a chance to taste some of their creamy ice cream after our closing remarks and door prize awards on Saturday afternoon. Hrs: Mon-Fri, 8am-9pm; Sat-Sun, 10am-9pm) • Larsen Tractor Test and Power Museum (East Campus). (Free during open hours; donation accepted). Yet Nebraska has a unique forestry history. Pioneers of the mid-nineteenth century moved into what was popularly known as the Great American Desert, and they rolled the dice that this semi-arid land, seemingly incapable of sustaining trees, could somehow grow crops. After winning that gamble, the settlers yearned for the trees they had grown accustomed to in the Eastern United States. They missed the beauty of the wooded areas and the respite of a shade tree.
