The French preoccupation with the past had been developing throughout the later nineteenth century and increased with Stravinsky’s residency in France.1 Stravinsky’s particular brand of neoclassicism did not find favour, however, with a number of intellectual young composers of the 1930s, notably those associated with La Jeune France, who regarded neoclassicism as a false path for musical modernism and were scathing in their attacks upon it. -

Ina Boyle inhabits a unique space in twentieth-century music in Ireland as the first resident Irishwoman to write a symphony. If her name conjures any recollection at all to scholars of British music, it is most likely in connection to Vaughan Williams, whom she studied with privately, or in relation to some of her friends and close acquaintances such as Elizabeth Maconchy, Grace Williams, and Anne Macnaghten. While the appearance of a biography may seem somewhat surprising at first glance, for those more aware of the growing interest in Boyle’s music in recent years, it was only a matter of time for her life and music to receive a more detailed and thorough examination. -

The Contest Works for Trumpet and Cornet of the Paris Conservatoire, 1835-2000: A Performative and Analytical Study, with a Catalogue Raisonné of the Extant Works Analytical Study: The Contest Works for Trumpet and Cornet of the Paris Conservatoire, 1835-2000: A Study of Instrumental Techniques, Forms and Genres, with a Catalogue Raisonné of the Extant Corpus By Brandon Philip Jones ORCHID ID# 0000-0001-9083-9907 Submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy July 2018 Faculty of Fine Arts and Music The University of Melbourne ABSTRACT The Conservatoire de Paris concours were a consistent source of new literature for the trumpet and cornet from 1835 to 2000. Over this time, professors and composers added over 172 works to the repertoire. Students and professionals have performed many of these pieces, granting long-term popularity to a select group. However, the majority of these works are not well-known. The aim of this study is to provide students, teachers, and performers with a greater ability to access these works. This aim is supported in three ways: performances of under-recorded literature; an analysis of the instrumental techniques, forms and genres used in the corpus; and a catalogue raisonné of all extant contest works. The performative aspect of this project is contained in two compact discs of recordings, as well as a digital video of a live recital. Twenty-six works were recorded; seven are popular works in the genre, and the other nineteen are works that are previously unrecorded. The analytical aspect is in the written thesis; it uses the information obtained in the creation of the catalogue raisonné to provide an overview of the corpus in two vectors. -

The fact that he did not can undoubtedly be explained by the circumstances of Irish musical life at the period: in bleak contrast to Britain, not only were good choirs few and far between, but there was little evidence of interest in choral music throughout the country at large. -

The reality lies in the middle, in which many individuals participated in resistance or collaboration in a variety of degrees. I argue that composing, performing, and listening to music are substantial resistant acts, using the resistance movements in Occupied Paris as a case study. This study has two overarching goals. -

Performances of Irish ballads remained popular with English audiences but the publication of Stanford’s song collection An Irish Idyll in Six Miniatures in 1901 by Boosey and Hawkes in London marks a shift to a different type of Irish song. -

Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Reed, Marc Allen, An historical and stylistic examination of Charles Chaynes’ Concerto Pour Trompette and Deuxième Concerto Pour Trompette, with an interview of the composer. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2007, 59 pp., 46 examples, bibliography, 32 titles. Research has been conducted on prominent mid-twentieth century French trumpet concertos and their composers. Jolivet, Bozza, and Tomasi have all been the subject of research. Charles Chaynes’ music is equally valuable to modern trumpet repertoire as that of Jolivet, Bozza, and Tomasi. Chaynes’ exclusion from research leaves a void in resources available to future trumpet students. A study of Charles Chaynes and his trumpet concertos is essential to preserving the history of the valve trumpet’s young modern repertoire. Lack of understanding of Chaynes’ trumpet concertos can only lead to misconceptions when interpreting these pieces. The thirty-nine year gap between Chaynes’ Trumpet Concerto No. 1 and Trumpet Concerto No. 2 is a remarkable time span between major compositions, and examining the works gives insight to the evolution of the trumpet concerto throughout the twentieth century. This project highlights Charles Chaynes’ contribution to the trumpet repertoire from both the beginning and end of his compositional career, and fills the research gap concerning his concertos. -

In 1952 and 1954, the Congress for Cultural Freedom hosted two music events. While the first festival has been researched considerably, the 1954 conference has not been documented comparably. -

Nineteen-year-old Lili Boulanger was the new sound of French music. Never before had a woman composer won first place in the century old Prix de Rome due to the conservative political views shared by the Académie and the misogyny of the competition’s jury. This momentous event has been given much attention in the research of Boulanger’s Prix de Rome success through sociological perspective on France in 1913; a bourgeoning feminist atmosphere in the increasingly liberal government of France influenced the jury’s decision to award Boulanger the Premier Grand Prix. Contemporary English musicological scholarship has favored this socio-historical narrative over analysis the aesthetic character of her winning cantata, Faust et Hélène, thereby neglecting another significant facet to Boulanger’s win; her overt incorporation of motifs from Richard Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde. -

Alwes ABSTRACT This dissertation explores how the art songs of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) composed before the Great War expressed the composer’s vision of “Englishness” or “English national identity”. These terms can be defined as the popular national consciousness of the English people. It is something that demands continual reassessment because it is constantly changing. Thus, this study takes into account two key areas of investigation. The first comprises the poets and texts set by the composer during the time in question. The second consists of an exploration of the cultural history of British and specifically English ideas surrounding pastoralism, ruralism, the trope of wandering in the countryside, and the rural landscape as an escape from the city. This dissertation unfolds as follows. The Introduction surveys the literature on Vaughan Williams and his songs in particular on the one hand, and on the other it surveys a necessarily selective portion of the vast literature of English national identity. The introduction also explains the methodology applied in the following chapters in analyzing the music as readings of texts. The remaining chapters progress in the chronological order of Vaughan Williams’s career as a composer.
