There are two types of feasts, movable dates (Palm Sunday, Pascha, Pentecost, etc.) and non- movable dates (Nativity, Presentation, and Dormition of the Theoto- kos, etc.). The non-movable feast days have periods before the feast for preparation, the Forefeast, and after the feast for celebration, the Afterfeast. The last day of the feast is called Apodosis, a Greek term meaning, “giving back or giving away,” the liturgical “Leavetaking” of a great feast. As much as we may want to live in the present, it seems we are forever looking back on it. Even in the Church, it is difficult to dwell in the present. It is hard enough to merely notice every feast that goes by, let alone make it a meaningful part of our lives. Thanks be to God, the ecclesiastical calendar accounts for DAYS THAT REMEMBER this reality. Much of the liturgical year happens in the wake of time—the track left behind by the feast days themselves.

The official decision was taken on Tuesday during a meeting of the Standing Holy Synod of the Church of Greece, chaired by Archbishop Ieronymos of Athens. The Church of Greece was expressing its reaction to widespread media reports suggesting yoga techniques as a way of dealing with stress during the Covid-19 pandemic. In the context of respect for religious freedom guaranteed in Greece, but also of the pastoral responsibility of the Church for avoiding creating religious syncretism, the Church of Greece reminded Orthodox Christians that yoga is a fundamental part of the religion of Hinduism, not just simply a “kind of exercise.” Therefore, the Standing Holy Synod pointed out that yoga is “completely incompatible with our Orthodox Faith and has no place in the lives of Christians.” In addition to calling on Orthodox Christians to avoid practicing yoga, the Holy Synod also distributed a circular to the clergy and metropolitans of the Church of Greece to abstain from any event organized by the Rotary and Lions international organizations. According to the circular, these organizations are not only limited to social events, but also include religious acts, since they have a typical rite of passage for new members and use a prayer that is addressed vaguely to a God, in the general sense of the word and not according to the Orthodox Faith.

    BULLETIN St. Parthenius, Bishop of Lampsacus – February 7 SaintAfterfeast Parthenius, of the Bishop Meeting of Lampsacus, was a native of the city of Melitoupolis (in northwestern Asia Minor), where his father Christopher served as deacon. The youth did not receive adequate schooling, but he learned the Holy Scripture by attending church services. He had a good heart, and distributed to the poor the money he earned working as a fisherman. Filled with the grace of God, Saint Parthenius from age eighteen healed the sick in the name of Christ, cast out demons and worked other miracles. Learning of the young man’s virtuous life, Bishop Philetus of Melitoupolis educated him and ordained him presbyter. In 325, during the reign of Constantine the Great, Archbishop Achilles of Cyzicus made him bishop of the city of Lampsacus (Asia Minor). In the city were many pagans, and the saint fervently began to spread the faith in Christ, confirming it through many miracles and by healing the sick. The people began to turn from their pagan beliefs, and the saint went to the emperor Constantine the Great seeking permission to tear down the pagan temple and build a Christian church in its place. The emperor received the saint with honor, gave him a decree authorizing the destruction of the pagan temple, and provided him with the means to build a church. Returning WEEKLY to Lampsacus, Saint Parthenius had the pagan temple torn down, and built a beautiful church of God in the city.
